Ravan's POV
On the afternoon of formal the school let the girls out early to prepare because they were very feminist but the dumb boys had to do the whole school day. I felt bad for Rowan, knowing he would want to take extra time to do his eyeliner.
Muun and I went together to get our makeup and hair done. I went all out with a blue makeup look and she selected a black and red one. We decided to match our hair; curled into ringlets with a slight braided crown wrapping around our heads.
In Muun's bedroom, dressed in the full ensemble, I finally let the excitement take over. When I looked in the mirror, I saw a different girl staring back at me. No, not girl. Woman.
My dress was a pale sky blue and cascaded down to the floor. It had a simple bodice and short, sheer sleeves, but the fabric was dappled all over with delicate silver streaks. They seemed to grow and shift, an ethereal forest of moonlight over a calm sea.
Muun entered wearing her own elegant red dress that contrasted beautifully with her hazel hair and eyes. Its layers were draped artfully over her arms and wrapped around her torso.
With an hour and a half before the actual event started, we made our way to Rylan's house, as he was hosting pre's beforehand.
When we arrived, I struggled to walk towards the door in my 10 cm high silver heels, wobbling around feeling like a fawn on new legs. Muun had opted for a much simpler set of blood red flats, so she wasn't having any trouble. Instead she was lightly holding my hand as I gripped her arm for dear life. I definitely should have practiced walking beforehand.
When we got to the door I was too scared to press the doorbell and bend my beautiful nails backwards. Instead of pressing the button I sent a message to Rowan letting him know we were there.
Even after a week of having the nails, I was still struggling to type on my phone so the message ended up as "hsy, muon asd i aee osfide rn".
Within a couple of seconds, the door opened and I was greeted with my boyfriend's brilliant smile. He leaned down to give me a quick peck on the cheek, barely more than a brush of lips to avoid wrecking my makeup, and beckoned us both inside.
Rowan's suit was simple and black, accented with a few well-placed silver chains. From a distance, he was plain, but the highlight of his outfit became apparent as I drew nearer.
His eyeliner was spectacular, a bold stripe of gold over a deep, hazy blue backdrop. I was floored by his sheer skill and dedication.
I noticed that the blue and gold eyeshadow tied in with my dress and with what I knew Rylan would be wearing. Of course Rowan would be so thoughtful. It gave me a warm, fuzzy feeling inside. I loved him so much!
I quickly latched onto his arm to steady myself and couldn't help but let out a tiny giggle. He slowed down as soon as I held onto him, making sure I wouldn't fall over. As we moved I turned around to give Muun a sheepish smile as an apology for holding onto her arm so tightly.
Everyone was waiting in the kitchen with drinks in hand when we entered; it seemed like we were the last one there.
My eyes swept around the room, noticing Jayn and Josefeen looking stunning in their respective metallic rose gold and pristine crystal white dresses. Lastly, my eyes fell on Rylan.
Of course, he looked royal, wearing a gold and beige corset over a scandalously unbuttoned white shirt. He was the perfect picture of elegance and sophistication. His usually silky white hair was styled slicked close to his head, glossy and unmoving with how much hairspray he'd put into it. Two cans at least by my estimate.
"Now that everyone is here," Rylan said, with a pointed look at Muun and I. "I shall call the limo to come pick us up. It should arrive in ten minutes."
I couldn't help but feel disappointed that he didn't say a proper hello to me, but I supposed he was just in one of his moods today. Maybe it was his time of the month. He always acted like he had one.
~~TimeSkip~~
2 hours later, I was still fumbling to find my feet on the dance floor to the tune of Dancing by Kylie Minogue, a truly underrated pick from the DJ.
Despite the sparse dinner I had eaten from what they served, I was barely hungry, filled up on giddy love instead. The venue served unlimited bread rolls with butter, much more preferable than the other options of dusty roast chicken or beef drowning in watery gravy.
The dance floor itself was located on a large, open-air veranda that extended out into a wide deck area, strung with little twinkling rainbow lights. Disco balls were suspended from the awnings as well as swinging spotlights that pulsed in time with the music.
Rowan soon joined me as Pink Pony Club by Chappel Roan began to play. I'd never seen him dance before and, honestly, my expectations weren't very high.
Except... watching his hips move to the music was surreal. Rowan seemed to know exactly what he was doing, his body flowing like water from one beat into the next. It was effortless and casual, entirely simple and unique to Rowan alone. I couldn't remember seeing anyone move so gracefully before.
"Whoa... Y-you're... incredible!" I gasped. "How did you learn to do that?"
Rowan didn't even pause his dancing, simply laughed like it was nothing, like his talent was nothing. "Oh, the mermaids taught me."
To anyone else, it would have sounded like a joke, but I knew the truth. Rowan Everbright was far from an ordinary boy, but I didn't care. I loved him so much anyway.
Everything was so happy and filled with unbridled joy. Nothing could possibly dampen my mood, not even when Rylan materialised next to Rowan and stole him away for a slow-dance.
I couldn't even bring myself to care that I had been abandoned, but I was suddenly much more conscious of my bladder. Going to the bathroom in my voluminous dress would be... interesting, but I reasoned that it couldn't be too difficult.
I meandered around until I found the sign for the bathrooms and began the trek down the tiled hallway, my heels clicking against the floor. Two shadowy figures lingered at the end of it, stowed away just outside the halo of light cast by the fluorescents.
As I drew closer I realised that I recognised them, and my stomach dropped. Neither Gael nor Marqus turned to notice me, too enthralled in their own conversation, so I convinced myself not to notice them.
I was determined not to think about how my precious GayGay had been stolen from me on such a special night, so I ducked into the women's bathroom where they couldn't follow.
With a burst of courage, I decided that today was the last time I would think about Gael. He was absolutely ruining my mood on such an amazing night with two of my favourite people; my boyfriend and his boyfriend.
I went back inside the ball room, found the two boys and forced them to get photo booth photos with me, as well as some of the professional ones. For the photobooth we had some stupid props like a sign that said "I'm sexy and I know it" or "party animal". The photographers made us take a lot of photos, and they posed us in many different ways. My personal favourites were the ones when we took turns being in the middle and both the others would kiss either cheek.
We were buoyed by a tide of people back to the dance floor as The Nutbush played, and I realised that I had found my balance on my ridiculously high heels, easily keeping up with everyone else.
At the 'end' of the night, the DJ, who was actually Rylan's Revs teacher, cut Katy Perry off in the middle of Last Friday Night to announce the awards. The students were all shepherded to their seats, but I was too busy concentrating on how beautiful Rowan looked.
I wanted to kiss him so badly, taste the coke he was drinking on the soft curve of his sweet lips. My concentration snapped back to reality, however, as a name I recognised was called.
"The winner of best dressed is... Rylan Mehan!"
Somehow both completely surprised and not at all, our whole table broke out into raucous applause as Rylan approached the stage to collect his Canva-template certificate with a smug grin on his face.
With that, the night officially concluded, but I knew that my formal adventure was far from over.
