The school day had finally ended, and students poured out of the classrooms, chatting and laughing as they made their way home. Scaramouche, however, had no time for idle conversation or lingering. He swiftly made his way out of the school gates, his pace quickening with each step.

The sun was beginning to dip below the horizon, casting a warm glow over the streets. Scaramouche’s thoughts raced as he weaved through the bustling city, his indigo eyes sharp with determination.

---

By the time he reached Lumine’s apartment building, the streets were quieter, and the soft orange hues of twilight had turned into the deep blues of the evening. Scaramouche glanced around, ensuring no one was watching, before slipping into the alley beside the building.

Scaling the fire escape was second nature to him by now. His movements were quick and agile, as though he had been doing this his whole life. When he reached Lumine’s window, he paused for a moment, peering inside. The apartment was quiet, the faint hum of the refrigerator the only sound.

“She’s not back yet,” he muttered to himself.

Pushing the window open just enough to slip through, Scaramouche climbed inside with practiced ease. The moment his feet hit the floor, he transformed back into his cat form. Midnight fur replaced indigo hair, and his sharp gaze softened into the familiar round eyes of Kuni.

---

He padded softly to the bed, his small frame moving gracefully across the room. Underneath the bed, he tucked away the bag he had carried—a small satchel containing his school uniform and a few personal items. It was a secret he had to keep hidden at all costs.

Once his belongings were securely stashed, Kuni leaped onto the bed, curling up in his usual spot. His ears twitched as he listened for the sound of Lumine’s return.

The familiar scent of her lavender perfume lingered in the air, and the comfort of being in her space calmed him.

---

An hour passed, and the soft creak of the front door opening caught his attention. Kuni’s ears perked up as he heard Lumine’s footsteps, followed by the faint rustling of her bag being set down.

“I’m home, Kuni,” her voice called out, tired but warm.

Kuni jumped off the bed and trotted into the living room, greeting her with a loud meow.

“There you are,” Lumine said, bending down to pick him up. “Did you miss me?”

She held him close, her warmth spreading through his fur. Kuni nuzzled against her neck, letting out a soft purr.

“You’re such a sweet cat,” she murmured, her fingers scratching behind his ears. “I don’t know what I’d do without you.”

Her words sent a pang through Scaramouche’s heart. She had no idea who—or what—he truly was, but her kindness and affection were real. It was both a comfort and a curse.

---

As the night settled in, Lumine prepared dinner and began to unwind, chatting softly with Kuni as though he could understand her every word. And in a way, he could.

While she spoke about her day, Scaramouche couldn’t help but watch her intently, his feline form concealing the storm of emotions within him.

He had found a strange sense of belonging in her apartment, in her presence. But he also knew that the life he was leading—the double identity he maintained—was fragile.

And for now, he would do whatever it took to protect the delicate bond they shared.
