Chapter 5: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

I am in the briefing room drinking my coffee when Tim enters and me and everyone else stand up and start clapping and cheering that he is back. Soon, Tim gets to his chair and finds the inflatable orthopedic pillow on his seat and I am silently laughing when he picks it up and grabs a pen and pops it.

"All right, all right, all right. Settle down. Settle down. Let's get to it. You ready, Officer Nolan? 'Cause once again, we start with you." Grey said to Nolan

"I'm flattered?" Nolan said in a confused voice

"Don't be. Yesterday, a four-man crew disguised as zombies knocked over a cash advance near Pico and Robertson. So, Officers Bishop and Nolan were able to apprehend two of the criminals, while the other two escaped. Somehow, Officer Nolan managed to let a civilian steal ten grand in already stolen cash. Luckily, CCTV captured our thief. Still waiting on an I.D." Grey tells us

"Uh, he plays guitar, if that helps." Nolan said providing information about the mystery guys hobbies

"Absolutely. 'Cause they always list special talents on your rap sheet." Grey said in a sarcastic tone when Andersen walks in

"Captain. How can we help you?" Grey asks her

"First off, I wanted to welcome Tim Bradford back. If you need anything, you let me know." Andersen tells Tim

"Yes, ma'am." Tim says

"Secondly, we just got some new intel on our zombies. Turns out that they're responsible for a rash of armed robberies in the last six months, always disguised differently. Detectives want to get the two in custody to flip on their partners at large, but there is no guarantee, so don't stop hunting. Finally, we got a request for a civil standby. Turns out somebody's getting fired from a tech job. Supervisor's worried things may not go right." Andersen tells us

"Babysitting a termination: a patrol officer's favorite assignment. So, who shall I bless with it?" Grey asks us when Nolan raises his hand

"Officer Nolan, are you volunteering?" Grey asks him to make sure

"Just embracing the inevitable, sir." Nolan says matter of fact tone

"Smart man. Get the address from Dispatch. That's it." Grey says and we all leave to go and patrol

(Time skip)

Me and West had been patrolling for a little bit when dispatch call in a silent alarm happening.

"7-Adam-07, silent alarm tripped at Chili John's." Dispatch said

"You think it's actually a crime in progress?" West asks me

"Nine times out of ten, a silent alarm is tripped accidentally, but you always treat it like it's real." I tell him

Soon, me and West had gotten to Chili John's and I parked the car and as soon as I parked the car both me and West got out and I was looking through the window and I see someone pointing their gun to one of the people who worked their.

"Put the money in the damn bag! Put the money in the damn bag! Are you crazy?! Hurry up! Hurry up! Put the money in the damn bag!" The person said

"7-Adam-7, we have a 2-11 in progress at our location. Requesting backup." I said through the walkie talkie

"Do we go in?" West asked me

"Put it in the bag!" The mystery person yelled at the worker motioning to the bag

"No. That'll just escalate things." I told him while watching just in case

"Come on!" The person said

"We'll grab her on the way out." I told him and as soon as the robber exited the diner both me and West confronted them

"Police! Drop your weapon!" I told the person and they took off running and I ran after them, on foot

"Stop! Stop!" I yell and the robber dropped their gun and West picked it up looking at it

"It's plastic." West told me after a moment a looking at the fake gun

"Stop!" I yell one more time and I finally tackled the robber down taking off their mask to see someone I never expected to see

"Aah!" Sue yelled

"Sue Cliffords?" I ask her

"Do I know you?" She asks me then

"You know her?" West asked me

"She played ball for the Trojans. Best 3-point shooter in the NCAA." I told him

"Nice to meet a fan." She said and me and West started to arrest her when I said

"Well, I know who you are and how good you are at basketball, but my sister is more of your fan, but she always brags to me how nice it would be to meet you. Too bad I have to tell her this." I say

"Well are you sure you don't like my game plays in basket ball?" She asks and I just stop talking and me and West were wrapping up the arrest when West looked at something on his phone

"Wow. 20 points a game, huh? You were no joke." He tells her

"So, what happened? I thought you got an offer to play for the WNBA. Plus, my sister may want to know when I tell her this." I ask her

"Blew out my knee senior year, lost my scholarship." She told us

"And now you commit armed robbery?" West asked her

"What else am I qualified to do?" She asked him

"You know, my sister met you once at a party at USC. You were so passionate about playing ball, and she was so not about majoring in engineering. Got her thinking about going a different way, and, well, she is going for a detective position." I tell her sounding proud of my sister

"How nice for your sister." She tells me and soon .

"You ever think about doing something else?" I ask West

"Hell, no. Being a cop is the only thing I ever wanted." He says and I knew he had no back up plan

"Sure. But things don't always go your way. You got to have a Plan "B" just in case. One out of three rookies washes out, so odds are either you, Chen, or Nolan won't be here in a year. I thought you were a sure bet to succeed at first, but those other two are rocking it, and you stumbled out the gate." I told him trying to convince him to at least have an idea of a backup plan

"That was a one-time thing. I have a long career ahead of me." He says like nothing bad will happen

"Yeah, that's what I thought." Sue told us and we got her in the back of the car and took her to the station to put her in holding

Soon, me and West got to the station and me, Grey, and West watched as Sue Cliffords was pacing in her holding cell

"It's a tragedy. See, I was at the game where Cliffords blew out her knee. You could see it in her face. She knew her career was over." He said

"And she didn't have a Plan "B." " I say sad for the fact that Jackson dosen't either and that my sister gets to learn her favorite basketball player became a criminal

"Always got to have a Plan "B" starting out." Grey says and I agree with that

"That's what I told the Boot." I told Grey

"Yeah." Grey agrees with me

"Sir, with all due respect, this has been my Plan "A" since I was in diapers. There's no way I don't see it through." West tells Grey even though his Plan A can always back fire even when he dosen't see it coming

"It's not always about you, Officer West. This is a job where anything can happen at any moment. If that bullet hits Officer Bradford six inches to the right, he's paralyzed or worse. Having a Plan "B" doesn't mean you're not committed. It means you're a realist." Grey tells him and me and West go to the break room

"You could be a nurse, or get into I.T. There's always clown college." I tell him

"Look, I don't need a Plan "B," and if I did, it wouldn't be from some pamphlet you grabbed off the community board." He tells me sounding upset

"How do you think I got the idea for the LAPD?" I ask him when Grey leans into the room

"Lopez, West, the zombie robbers just flipped on their partners. SWAT's hitting the house. We're providing tactical support. Meet in the bullpen in five." He tells us and both me and West leave to the briefing room where Andersen starts to talk about the plan

"All right, let's get started. Our targets are Steve Bower, Kai De Vera. Bit of an odd couple. Bower's known for at least six hard-core 2-11s, a lot of collateral damage in his wake. De Vera did two tours as a door gunner on a Black Hawk, was under the radar till she hooked up with Bower about a year ago. Remember, if anything, she's far more dangerous than he is. Sergeant Laubacher will be giving you the briefing. He's in charge of tonight's operation, so listen up." Andersen says

"Thank you, Captain. Targets are at a house in the hills over the Sunset Strip. Ingress is limited, so we'll be coming in hot. Team one will be primary entry, deploying flashbangs and breaching tools. Team two, break and rake the back glass door. Tactical support, you're outer perimeter. Sergeant Grey has your positions. We'll go through detailed assignments on the drive in. My team, let's go." Laubacher said to his team

"Get to it." Andersen said

"All right." Grey said then turned to his squad "See, we could do this whole thing in five minutes without flashbangs and BearCats, but SWAT has us on guard duty, so make sure they take it seriously. I don't want to be embarrassed at the next Special Ops picnic." Grey told us

"Yes, sir." I say

"We won't let you down, Sergeant." West said

"Is there really a Special Ops picnic?" Nolan asked then got his answer based off of Talia's look "I didn't think so." Nolan said and we all left

Talia, Nolan, West, and I park close to each other and we all got out of our cars and waited for our orders.

"Sucks we have to be down here." Nolan said first

"Yeah, well, get used to it. Patrol is lowest on the totem pole when it comes to operations like this." Talia told him

"Perimeter watch is a necessary part of police work. It's nothing to look down on." West said

"Is he for real?" Talia asked me

"Yep. Doesn't have a Plan "B," though." I tell her

"What? Well, that's just crazy." She says

"I've been dealing with this crap all day." West said sounding a little angry

"Officer Nolan, this is your Plan "B," right?" I ask Nolan

"Uh, more like Plan "D." First it was astronaut, then law school, then construction, then this. If this doesn't work out, I'm thinking beauty school." He says and as soon as he says that we hear gunfire and people shouting

"Should we go up there?" Nolan asks

"No. But we should spread out and cover the perimeter." Talia answers and her and Nolan walk away while me and West stay near the patrol cars when we heard the radio

(Time skip to the station)

Me and West were in the hallway and we saw Captain Andersen turning to go upstairs and we got to approach her.

"Let's ask the captain." I tell him

"Ask me what?" She asks us

"What was your Plan "B"?" I ask her

"I didn't have one. I was all-in. Nothing was gonna stop me from being a cop. Turned out pretty well." She answers and I feel kinda upset that someone else did not have a plan B

"I agree, Captain." West said

"Whatever." I said and left

I got home and saw Angela looking at paper work which was most likely for her becoming a detective.

"Do you wanna know who I arrested today?" I ask her and she looks up

"Yeah, sure. Who was it?" She asks

"Sue Cliffords." I say

"Really?" She gives me a surprised look

"Yup. She was robbing a diner with a fake gun but you can read the report but all I know is that she started as soon as her knee blew out, well, at least thats what she said." I tell her

"Wow. Well, if I can I will try and read that report tomorrow." She tells me

"Well, I am gonna go to sleep. Also, I will be hoping you get that detective position. Goodnight, love you." I tell her heading to my room

"Goodnight, thank and love you too." She says and as soon as I get to my room I change and lay down in bed and look at the photo I kept of me and James when we got married and after that I fell asleep
