Chapter 12: Flesh and Blood

The Rookie // Wesley Evers FanficWords: 9829

We were all in the the briefing room when Grey walked in.

"All right. Look alive, look alive. Officer Nolan, you ready?" Grey asks

"Yes, sir." Nolan answers

"Good. Now, answer me this. What is your favorite part about the job? And don't say "To make a difference." " Grey tells him

"I wasn't going to. But it is." Nolan says and I silently laugh

"What's your least favorite?" Grey asks him

"Oh, that's easy. Paperwork." Nolan says and then Captain Andersen steps into the room, but in a patrol uniform

"Imagine how I feel." Andersen says and other officers start to murmur

"All right." I say

"Most of what a captain does is paperwork. 'Cause of that, I feel like I've lost touch with what being a cop is really about. People. It's not only the citizens that we serve and protect. It's every single one of you in this room. So, to remedy that, I've decided Sergeant Grey and I are gonna ride patrol today." Andersen tells everyone

"Together?" Tim asks

"No. We're each gonna ride with a rookie, and their respective T.O.s will pair up." Andersen tells him

"Ma'am, I'd be honored if you'd ride with me." West tells her

"That is sweet, Officer West, but today I'm riding with Officer Chen." Andersen tells him

"Sergeant Grey, I'd be honored if you rode with Officer West today." Nolan tells Grey

"That's cute, Officer Nolan. But you know my heart belongs to you." Grey says

"Lucky me." Nolan says

Every patrol officer is in the garage and Me and West were talking.

"Why do you think Lucy and Nolan got picked over me?" West asks me

"Two words: body odor." I tell him

"I'm serious. It means something, doesn't it? Andersen's clearly playing favorites riding with Lucy." West tells me

"Maybe. But do you really think Nolan is Grey's favorite?" I ask him

"No." West says

"Then stop worrying so much. I tell him when my phone starts ringing "Leave me alone!"

"Okay. Dropping it." West says

"Not you." I tell him with a sigh "My phone. Or, rather, my mom."

"What'd she do?" West asks me

"She wants to know if I'm bringing a date to my brother's wedding." I tell him

"That sounds reasonable." West tells me

"Not when there's extras on it." I tell him

"Meaning?" West asks me

"If I don't bring a date, she'll spend the whole night trying to set me up with the best man, Hugo." I tell him

"Mm. I'm guessing Hugo's not your type." West tells me

"He smells like kitty litter. And I don't even think he owns a cat. Spent my niece's baptism bragging about how much he squats." I tell him with disgust

"Maybe he squats kitty litter." West tells me then I give him a look

"You're not helping." I tell him and we went patrolling but then stopped at the food truck area

"I mean, how could we not respond? It was a shots-fired call." West asks mentioning about earlier

"Did the captain ask for backup?" I ask him

"No. But -" He says until I interrupt him

"But nothing. She's not a damsel in distress. If that were Grey, would you have insisted we ride in like the cavalry? And now you created a real problem, instead of the fake one you made up in your head." I tell him

Out of nowhere a man with a something under his arm ran past us, when a man in a suit was behind him, but I was able to catch the second guys arm stopping him.

"Stop that guy! He's getting away! Hey, stop! Let go of me." The man tells me

"Calm down." I tell him

"Calm down? I was just chasing the guy that stole my briefcase, but you let him get away. And, by the way, you're supposed to identify yourself before you engage a suspect." He tells me

"A, I had no way of knowing you were the victim here, and B, I didn't have time to identify myself due to the immediacy of the situation." I tell him

"Try that on someone who isn't a lawyer." He tells me

"Do you want to file a report on your briefcase or keep telling me how to do my job?" I ask him

"Well, I don't have all day, so I guess I'll file a report." The guy says

"How about I take care of the report and you go enjoy your coffee?" West says

"I have a locator in my briefcase. If we go now, I can track it." The man says

"Yeah, we can't just wander around on a scavenger hunt." I tell him annoyed

"Okay, can you give us a second, please?" West asks the guy

"Yeah." The man says while me and West step aside

"Look, maybe we should help him. Otherwise, I bet he'll file a complaint." West tells me

"Fine. But if he gives me any more attitude, he's gonna taste pepper spray." I tell him annoyed with the guy

"Let's go." I tell the man

"Let's go." The man says simultaneously

"Yeah. This is gonna go great." West says

We were walking down a sidewalk near the food truck area looking for, whose name I learned, Wesley's briefcase.

"So, what's in the briefcase that's so important?" West asks Wesley

"Handwritten depositions. If I lose them, my client could go to jail." Wesley answers

"Maybe your client belongs in jail." I tell him my opinion

"Why handwritten?" West asks him

"Protects my clients' privacy. I don't trust the cloud with anything important." He tells West when his phone beeps "Wait, wait. He should be right around the corner."

They turn the corner and see a man trying to get the briefcase open.

"Hey." Wesley says

"Police! Stop!" I yell

After I yell at the man, he tries away, but I run and tackle him and handcuff

"Hey, hey. Take it easy. What? You don't have to be so rough." Wesley tells me

"You're criticizing my arrest? 'Cause I was expecting a thank-you for getting your briefcase back." I tell him

"The law defines excessive force as a use of force greater than that which a reasonable officer would use under the circumstances." Wesley says

"He makes a good point." The thief tells me

"Nobody's talking to you." I tell the thief

"Are you gonna read him his righ -" Wesley says to me until I interrupt him

"I will if you shut up for a minute." I say to him when West comes up to me

"I'll do it." West says

He takes the suspect's arm and leads him to stand several feet away.

"What the hell is your problem?" I ask Wesley annoyed

"For starters, your blatant disregard for the man's civil rights." Wesley tells me

"That man is a criminal I apprehended based on your description." I tell him

"You're a police officer. Why am I describing due process to you?" He asks me

"You don't need to describe anything to me." I tell him even more annoyed

"Mm-hmm. Three words: protect and serve." Wesley me and I am almost about to blow

"Two words: shut up." I tell him

"I'm not gonna shut up." Wesley tells me

"You do something dumb, I'm gonna call you out on it." Wesley then adds

"Oh, wow. They really dig each other, huh?" The thief asks West

"Are you crazy?" West asks him

"No, no. Look how close they're standing." The thief tells him

"I want to slap you in the face." I tell Wesley

"Yeah, you -" Wesley says until the thief start to talk

"My ex and I used to scream at each other just like that. It was hot." The thief tells him

"Hmm." West says

Soon, we got to the station and me and West booked the thief and Wesley was talking to the thief who stole his briefcase.

"Don't say anything without your lawyer present." Wesley tells the thief

"You're doing this to mess with us, right? The guy robbed you." I tell him

"Look, the theft of my briefcase and the use of force you used to apprehend him are two separate events. The wonderful thing about our legal system is we both have rights." Wesley tells me and I about lost my cool

Andersen and Chen enter the booking area with a man.

"Whoa." West says

"What?" Wesley asks

"Captain took a shot to the face." I tell him

We were still in the booking when I look at Wesley

'You need to go wait out in the bullpen." I tell him

"What happened?" West asked Chen

"I ducked." She tells him

"Oh, so he's your client now?" I ask Wesley

"Until his regular counsel shows up, yeah. Is that a problem?" Wesley asks me

"What's going on with Lopez and that guy?" Chen asks West

"It's been a weird day." West tells her

I left Wesley alone when I heard Chen say

"I got it, Captain." Chen says

"Turn him over!" A man

"Holy crap." Chen says

"What?" West asks

"It's a Glock. There's no external safety. You charged a live weapon." Chen says

"Told you Captain could take care of herself." I tell her when Tim comes in the front door

"What the hell happened here?" Tim asks

Everybody, including me, reacts to Tim odor.

"Oh, my - Um, did you get skunked?" Chen asks and I leave them

I left the locker the locker room in my street clothes about to leave, when I encounter Wesley.

"Oh, man. Let me guess. You have another complaint you'd like to file." I ask him

"No more complaints. I promise. Look, I graduated from Whittier Law School. Night classes, paid my own way. Needless to say, there was never gonna be a-a fancy downtown firm at the end of that rainbow." Wesley tells me

"This feels like another thing you're trying to blame on me." I tell him still annoyed from earlier

"Not at all. No, I like renting an office above an Ethiopian restaurant. Look, I'm scrappy, okay? I really love representing the little guy. But today, my tenacity - it clouded my judgment." He tells me

"Are you trying to argue an apology?" I ask him

"No. I'm sorry. You were trying to help me, even though you really didn't want to, and I appreciate that. So thank you for getting my briefcase back." Wesley says

"You're welcome." I tell him

"And I'd like to take you to dinner." Wesley says and I have a surprised look

"Let me guess - Ethiopian?" I ask with a little smile

"God, no, that place is a dump." He tells me

"Do you own a nice suit?" I ask him and he looks at his suit, then I clarify a little more "No, a nice suit."

"Yeah. Why?" He asks

"I need a date for my brother's wedding next Saturday." I tell him

"It's bold for a first date." He says

"Yeah. Maybe it should be our second. Buy me a drink?" I ask him

"I would love to." He says

"All right." I say then we leave and go and get drinks
