Chapter 430
Ike was the quickest to react, nimbly sliding off the couch and scurrying to the door, exclaiming, âUncleâ¦no, thanks, sir!â
It was the delivery I had ordered.
âwent over, took the delivery, closed the door again, and patted Ikeâs little head. âMissing Uncle?â
âAh⦠no.â
Ike shook his head. âNot missing Uncle, just want to be with you. Jane, can I sleep with you tonight?â
âOnly if your uncle agrees.â
I took his hand and headed to the dining room, looking over at Mark. âHey, I ordered from this local diner in Vista Town. Youâve gotta try it.â
âSure.â
Mark wasnât picky; heâd eat anything.
He came over, intending to sit next to me, but Ike climbed onto the chair behind him, gently tapping his waist. âSir, can you sit across? I wanna sit next
to Jane.â
Mark looked down at him and pinched his cheek. âAlright.â
Dinner was a relaxed affair with five dishes and a soup.
Ike was wellâbehaved, handling his own bowl and spoon with ease.
Whenever he needed help serving food, heâd call me.
âJane, what about my uncleâs dinner?â
Suddenly, Ike remembered something midâmeal, his big eyes filled with concern looking at me. âUncle must be so sad, he canât cook by himselfâ¦â
âHe can order delivery too.â
I chuckled, trying to steer the conversation. âBesides, we have a guest, and guests come first, right?â

âRight, Uncleâs family!â
Ike beamed, waving his little spoon. âWe donât have to worry about him!â
Mark seemed momentarily taken aback. âYou and Gregory are⦠together?â
âNo.â
I smiled, explaining, âHe just lives in the same building.â
Mark nodded thoughtfully, then smiled. âLooks like heâs got the upper hand being so close.â
âHey,â
I started to say something when the doorbell rang again.
Ike wiggled, eager to open the door, but I held him back. âYou keep eating, Iâll get it.â
It must be Gregory coming to pick up Ike.
I went to the door and, sure enough, was met with a pair of slightly annoyed and scrutinizing hazel eyes.
Gregory leaned back in his wheelchair, looking up at me. âPush me in.â
âYou can control it yourselfâ¦â
His wheelchair was electric.
Gregory yawned and said nonchalantly, âI twisted my hand; it hurts a bit.â
âAlright.â
I moved behind him, pushing him inside. âIkeâs still eating. Do you want to
joinâ¦â
âYes.â
His tone was ambiguous. âIâm starving. I thought youâd call me for dinner.â
There was a hint of accusation.
As if I was some faithless lover, neglecting to invite him to dinner.
I sighed. âYou said you had a meetingâ¦â

He smiled slightly. âSo you did think of calling me?â
âI did.â I answered truthfully.
His eyes sparkled with amusement, and Ike, sitting at the dining table with his little legs swinging, exclaimed, âUncle, youâre finally here!â
Gregory responded lightly, and suddenly, Ike hopped down from his chair, eagerly making room for him.
âUncle, sit here and eat with her!â
Mark raised an eyebrow but didnât comment.
The atmosphere turned somewhat strange.
Gregory casually commented on the food. âThis is from that diner I took you to, right?â
âYeah, the delivery came, and it still tastes good.â
Gregory nodded. âItâs decent, good for hosting.â
Markâs lips thinned. âMr. Ford, the Fords, would they approve of you marrying Jane?â
âThe Fords?â
Gregory laughed mockingly, but his response chilled the room. âYou think Iâm like you, needing to please my family?â
Markâs expression turned stoic. âIf it wasnât for family approval, your legs wouldnât be like this, right?â
âHey!â
I sharply cut him off. âHis legs arenât as bad as you think. Heâll be able to walk again eventually.â
Mark looked frustrated. âJane, if it wasnât serious, he wouldnât still be in a wheelchair after two yearsâ¦â
âExactly.â
Gregory didnât seem bothered, his lazy smile unfazed. âBut Mark, your legs are fine, and yet she didnât choose you. Buddy, you gotta know your boundaries

and not meddle too much.â
Markâs grip on his utensils tightened, his fingertips turning white. âGregory, you know what the biggest difference between us is?â
Gregory didnât respond, merely gestured for him to continue.
Mark set down his utensils, straightened his shirt cuffs, and stood up, his gaze cold yet firm. âWhen Jane needed someone the most, I was always there for
her.â
âJust that alone means you have no say in our relationship.â
After speaking, Mark looked at me softly. âEnjoy your meal. Iâve got to head back to RiverCity. Iâll take my leave now.â
âHeyâ¦â
I stood up, intending to see him to the elevator.
But a strong hand clutched my wrist, silently conveying his wish.
I looked at Gregory, whispering, âIâll just see him out and be right back.â
âDonât go.â
