Chapter 421
Chapter 421
The mood was decidedly awkward.
Edith Ford was still in a daze, âAdded? When did I add you? No, I didnât!â
I shot back, âNo? Really?â
âI⦠umâ¦â
Clearing her throat and casting a glance towards Gregory, Edithâs lips twitched, âDid I⦠add you?â
Gregory nodded, firm as a rock, âYou did.â
âI did?â
âYes, you did.â
âRight, I did.â
Suddenly enlightened, Edith flashed a smile at me, âIâm so sorry, my memory is just terrible. Yes, I did add youâ¦â
Turning to Gregory, she asked, âWhen did I do it again?â
âAt dinner, remember?â Gregory raised an eyebrow.
âOh, right.â
Edith smacked her forehead, âYes, yes, I even asked Greg for your contact then. It was about his knee pain!â
Then, uncertain again, she asked Gregory, âThat was it, right?â
Gregory just gave her a look.
Edith, with a meaningful smile, turned to me, âThat was my backup account, I barely use it. How about we add each other again?â
âSure.â
We shared a knowing/smile.
After exchanging contacts, I left the Ford residence, heading to the nursing
home.
09:30
Back in her apartment, Edith pivoted from the elevator and assessed Gregory leisurely.
âWhat are you staring at? Got something on my face?â Gregory frowned.
âNo, no, no.â
Shaking her head thoughtfully, Edith opened her banking app. âIâve had my eyes on this handbag, not too pricey, just a cool two million. Mind covering it for me, Greg?â
Gregory scowled, âWhy donât you just rob a bank?â
âOh.â Nodding, Edith fiddled with her phone. âIâll quickly clear things up with your friend about that account, wouldnât want her getting scammed or anything⦠right?â
Gregory gritted his teeth, âThe money.â
âSuch a big spender, bro.â
Without hesitation, Edith forwarded the account details to him, grinning, âIâl| have the SA hold it for me.â
Her phone pinged with a notificationâa deposit of five million.
Gregory was usually a man of careful planning, known for being pretty stingy. He was proudly saving up for what he called a âwife fund.â
To his sisters, this just meant he was downright stingy. Aside from holidays, getting anything out of him was like pulling teeth.
After the laughter subsided, Edithâs spine tingled with suspicion, âSince when have you been so generous?â
âHush money.â
Gregory shot her a sidelong glance, âAlso, doesnât your bestie know Bella Taylor? The one whose daughter popped up out of nowhere last year? Find out what thatâs about,â
Relieved, Edith realized his true intentions, patting her chest, âLeave it to me
Then, with a raised eyebrow, âWhat, getting restless now? Switching from
2/4
playing hard to get to playing the victim?â
Gregory deadpanned, âGive me back the money.â
Edith glared, âYou couldâve just said so. Forget it.â
âAbout time you headed back to Vista Town, donât you think? Maybe bring Ike back with you?â Gregory changed the subject.
âYeah.â
Mentioning her son made Edith feel a twinge of guilt, âIâll pick him up tomorrow, perfect for the weekend.â
After the divorce, that her exâhusband gave her custody without a fight was a blessing in itself.
Gregory nodded, âYouâre busy dating, Iâll take care of him.â
âYou???â
Edith was flabbergasted.
Gregory was notoriously impatient, especially with kids.
After losing Lilliana Myers as a child, just seeing kids made him anxious.
Edith touched his forehead, âYou sick?â
Gregory dodged her hand, âIsnât it said, women love kids?â
She got his implication, laughing, âOh, so you want my son to help you woo your lady?â
âWhy not?â
âI guessâ¦â
Extending her hand, Edith smirked, âBut heâs the Taylor familyâs prized jewel. Itâll cost you. How much are you thinking?â
Her marriage had been more of a business deal.
But she and that oldâfashioned Taylor couldnât compromise, with neither willing to budge.
Just a few years her senior, yet so uptight. She wears a sexy nightdress, and
09:30 1
he wraps her in a robeâutterly clueless.
She endured until she couldnât, then walked away.
Gregory agreed easily, âNo problem. Bring Ike over, and whatever he wants, he gets.â
âYour word?â
Edith was skeptical, âYouâre not playing me?â
Gregoryâs eyes twinkled, âWhy would I?â
Kids are easy to please.
Ask them to choose between a million bucks or an action figure, theyâd choose the toy in a heartbeat.
Adults might not believe in simplicity, but kids do, without a doubt.
Gregory wheeled himself to the window, blending into the night with his gaze fixed outside.
He didnât believe in empty promises, just in Lilliana, or maybe in Jane Websterâthe Jane she was now.
