Chapter 406
RiverCity isnât exactly a sprawling metropolis, so when I decided to return home, I was pretty sure Iâd bump into him sooner or later. I just didnât expect it to happen so fast.
As I jerked my hand away, I could hear Bellaâs surprised voice, âMrs.
Ferguson?â
âThatâs right.â
âExâwife.â
Bryant and I spoke up almost at the same time.
I calmed myself, turned to Bella with a small smile. âMs. Taylor, you seem busy. Weâll be on our way.â
âOf course, Ms. Taylor, feel free to call anytime,â Christine added politely.
As we were leaving, Bellaâs voice followed us, tinged with schadenfreude, âMr. Ferguson, seems like your exâwife isnât exactly thrilled to see you, huh?â
We were just about to exit the hotel when a sleek black Bentley pulled away from the valet stand. Without thinking, I dashed towards it, recognizing the familiar license plate.
Christine caught up, âWhatâs the rush? Did you see a ghost or something?â
âNo.â I pointed at the Bentley now merging into traffic, saying, âThatâs the car I saw that day at the rehab center, Gregoryâs car.â
âGregoryâs in RiverCity?â
âLooks like it.â
I tossed the car keys to her, âYou head back, I need to check something at River Villa.â
Two years had passed, his death was public knowledge, it was unlikely heâd still be there. But I had to try my luck.
âIâm coming with you.â

Christine insisted, refusing to let me take a cab alone.
Upon arriving at River Villa, she stayed in the car, âIf he is indeed still living here, I think this reunion should be just between you two. Call me if you need anything.â
âAlright.â I nodded.
Stepping into the elevator, I pressed the familiar floor button. As the numbers climbed, I surprisingly felt a bit nervous. Like Christine said, what if I saw him?
Then what?
What could I possibly say after all this time, after choosing to leave him behind?
âDing-â
The elevator reached the floor, and I stepped out, standing in front of the door he used to lean against so casually. I took a deep breath before ringing the doorbell, prepared for no one to answer.
Surprisingly, the door opened quickly, revealing a woman with flowing curls and flawless makeup. She raised an eyebrow, âCan I help you?â
âIâ¦â
Caught off guard, I offered an awkward smile, âSorry, I must have the wrong apartment.â
âNo problem.â
She seemed friendly, albeit a bit curious. It wasnât until I turned back to the elevator that she closed the door.
Inside, Gregory was lounging on the couch, a blanket over his legs, working on a tablet with a brooding look, âHad enough?â
âNot quite.â
She sauntered over to an armchair, intrigued, âI think I need to get to know her better, see what kind of woman has you hung up for so long.â
Gregory smirked coldly, âLeave her be.â
âEven now, youâre still defending her?â Her legs crossed elegantly as she said, âAfter all, she did betray you, didnât she? Even with you âdeadâ for two years, she continued being Mrs. Ferguson. Even Molly Ford tried calling her, and Bryant picked up.â
âEdith Ford, if youâve got nothing nice to say, maybe donât say anything at all.â
âDid I strike a nerve?â
Gregory shot her a look, âRight or wrong doesnât matter. It hurts, and I donât
want to hear it.â
She probed, âSo whatâs your plan? Just gonna stay âdeadâ forever?â
