Chapter 389
Gregory saw right through me. âI want the truth.â
I laid it all out. âI need some time to think things through.â
Gregory crossed his arms, nodding in agreement. âFair enough. Take all the time you need.â
The following day, I had plans with Gregory to meet the person Farley had taken from Susanâs place. Gregory mentioned the person had spilled some beans. He thought it best I should hear it firsthand before deciding whether to believe it.
Gregory said, âOtherwise, coming from me, it might seem Iâm trying to stir the pot, which would ruin my good guy image.â
The doorbell rang as I was about to get ready, change, and do my makeup.
After checking my phone, I saw I still had a good two hours before our meetâup. Smiling, I got up and breezed to the door, only to freeze at the sight of the visitor.
âMr. Ford,â I greeted politely.
At that moment, Klein was a far cry from the imposing figure at the hospital that night. He was more like an approachable middleâaged gentleman. âMind if I come in?â
âSure, please do.â As I stepped back to let him in, my door remained ajar with a bodyguard standing watch.
Klein sat down, his gaze sweeping through the room, then sighed. âGreg acts like he doesnât care about anyone, but heâs been fussing over you for twenty years. He even got this apartment fixed up just for you. The Ford familyâs heir, running errands like buying screws at the drop of a hat.â
My heart raced. Wellâoff families usually outsourced the renovations. Theyâd show up once it was all done to check the work.
I got Klein a cup of coffee. âYes, Gregory has been great.â
And Gregory was good to me, beyond reproach. I shouldnât fear that he would turn on me as Bryant did when I offered my heart.
âTwenty years ago, you and my silly son would have been a match made in
heaven.â Klein finally got to the point. âBut now, whether you divorce, you were Mrs. Ferguson. And he, well, he deserves a better fate.â
I clenched my fists. âWhat are you implying?â
âI can tell youâre a smart girl. Without the Myers family, you and Greg are worlds apart.â Klein continued, âAnd with the Myers family under Mr. Fergusonâs thumb, theyâre not what they used to be. Plus, you know well whether Mr. Ferguson will divorce you.â
He might as well have said straightforwardly. Whether I divorced or returned to the Myers family, I was not worthy of Gregory.
I lowered my gaze. âDid you ask Gregory what he wants?â
âIf he agreed, I wouldnât be here.â Klein chuckled, effortlessly adding, âHeâs headstrong, but Mrs. Ferguson, you see things. Iâm sure you understand. I have other sons besides Greg. If he insists on being stubborn, the Ford family has other options.â
The implication was clear. If Gregory chose to be with me against his familyâs wishes, the Ford family legacy could be in the hands of his halfâsiblings.
I looked up, cutting to the chase. âPaul wouldnât agree, would he?â
I knew Paul was particularly fond of Gregory.
âSee, I told you youâre clever.â Klein sipped the coffee, his voice steady, âUnfortunately, your situation has caused a rift between my father and me. He had a heart attack this morning and is currently in the hospital. I call the shots in the Ford family now.â
Klein rose slowly, reminding me again of my place. âMrs. Ferguson, I canât get through to Greg, but you definitely can.â
