Chapter 353
He frowned, glancing at the butler who had already walked away, and said, âSheâs not Lilliana.â
The paternity test came out positive.â
I felt somewhat helpless.
He asserted, âThere must be something wrong with the paternity test. Jane, I might mistake someone else for her.â
By âsomeone else,â I knew he meant
He spoke again, in a quiet voice, âBut I would never fail to recognize her.â
1 pursed my lips before saying, âThatâs between you and the Myers family, Gregory. Itâs best we keep our distance.â
I really didnât want to fan the flames any further.
Without looking at his expression, I pulled Christine into the banquet hall.
Despite being arranged last minute, the welcome party
anything but halfâhearted.
The lights shone brightly, the hall was luxurious, clearly a gala for the elite.
After grabbing a drink from a tray held by a servant, Christine turned to me, surprised, âWhen did you become so tough?â
âOh please,â I smiled wryly, âEven the dumbest learn from their mistakes. Besides, things are different now.â
âHow so?â
âBefore, I was already deep in it, and pulling myself out was
painful and hard.â
I couldnât forget those restless nights, âNow, Iâm still at the edge of the pit, with no sunk costs, so itâs easier to stay rational.â
A person whoâs just been burned once is not so easily swayed again.
Christine sighed, then we saw Adah waving us over, introducing us to some high-society ladies around her.
âYou ladies were asking if I switched dressmakers recently, well, here she is. Donât be fooled by her youth; her design talent is immense, and her craftsmanship rivals that of the seasoned masters. The stitching and tailoring look too advanced for someone her age.â
âAdah.â
Christine and I greeted her with a smile, with Christine being the more social butterfly, half truthfully and half exaggeratingly praising my and Janedreamâs work to the noble ladies.
For them, it wasnât just about getting a new dress; it was an opportunity to get closer to the Ford and Myers families.
As the conversation flowed, one of the ladies laughingly said, âI heard the big boss of RF Group is coming tonight. No idea how old he is, but my daughter is still single.â
âDonât get your hopes up.â
A familiar lady chimed in, âRF is on a roll, having acquired several companies aside from Ferguson Group. That boss has quite the knack. Setting aside whether you can catch his eye, the fear is, even if you do, heâs the type to devour without leaving bones.â
The Ferguson Group once dominated half of RiverCity.
And with the current maneuvers, Bryantâs net worth has skyrocketed, the gap in connections and influence with the old families now overshadowed by sheer wealth.
In a short span of time, for the Myers family to attempt any manipulation was now laughable.
Otherwise, Susan wouldnât be so eager to curry favor.
âSpeaking of which,â
Susan, regaining her usual demeanor upon hearing this, joined with a smile, âItâs not as scary as you all make it sound. Plus, if youâre thinking of making a move, youâre too late!â/
The first lady to speak asked, âAre you planning for your Dorothy?â
âLetâs not spell it out!â
Susan, basking in the glory as if she had already become the matriarch of RF Group, said, âInitially, they were only sending a CEO tonight, but once this big boss heard Dorothy was picking him up personally, he changed his mind about coming. Now, if that doesnât scream âsure thing, what does?â
We quietly moved away, Christine gleefully whispering, âCan you imagine Mrs. Myersâ face when she finds out RFâs big boss is actually Bryant?â
