Next Morning â Medicâs Room
The morning sun filters through the window. Bobby slowly opens his eyes, groaning from the sharp pain in his hand. He turns his head and notices Ryn Ember asleep on a nearby chair, her head resting beside his bed.
Just then, the medic walks in quietly.
Medic (whispering): "Hey, kid. Donât wake her. She came in at midnight and stayed awake the entire night watching over you â worrying about you."
Bobby turns to look at Ryn. His eyes begin to fill with tears. He quickly wipes them just as she stirs.
Ryn (blinking): "Bobby...?"
She sees him awake and, without a word, suddenly hugs him tightly.
Ryn: "You know, I was so worried about you. This all happened because of me."
Bobby (softly): "No⦠itâs not your fault. You tried to hold back. I was the one who couldnât dodge in time. And⦠you donât have to worry about me. Because Iâm noâ"
She suddenly slaps him lightly.
Ryn (firmly): "Donât you dare say that again!"
Bobby (smiling weakly): "Okay, I wonât."
He pauses, then gasps softly.
Bobby: "Wait â todayâs the start of the Resonance Clash! I have to be there!"
Ryn: "Stop. Youâre not going anywhere."
Bobby: "Butâ"
Ryn: "You donât have a match today. So just stay here and rest. Iâll bring you some food."
Bobby: "How do you know that?"
Ryn remembers her conversation with Garron Blaze the previous day.
Flashback â Last Night
Garron Blaze: "Hey, Ryn. Tomorrowâs the start of the Resonance Clash."
Ryn: "But Bobby has a match in that!"
Garron Blaze: "Donât worry. Iâll make sure heâs not scheduled tomorrow."
Ryn: "Good. Iâm heading to the medicâs. I canât just sit around worrying about him."
Garron Blaze: "Fine. Go."
Later â Resonance Camp Grounds
The arena is buzzing. Crowds from the village have arrived early, and the clan leaders are seated, observing the excitement.
Villager 1: "Who do you think will fight today? Lian Vey? Lara Blaze? Shade Sol?"
Villager 2: "Maybe Marin Flow or Joran Velt too."
A hush falls as a village guard steps forward to address the crowd.
Guard: "Attention everyone! The rules of the Resonance Clash have changed. From now on, battles will only end if one fighter surrenders â or falls unconscious. Until then, no one is allowed to intervene."
The author's tale has been misappropriated; report any instances of this story on Amazon.
Villager 3 (whispering): "So⦠no early interruptions anymore."
Villager 4: "Yeah. Probably because two people already forfeited. They want real clashes now."
Garron Blaze crosses his arms, clearly displeased.
Garron Blaze: "Who made that rule?"
Vex Sol, the Dusk Clan Leader, speaks calmly.
Vex Sol: "I did. I told the guard to announce it. The crowd always wants a complete fight â not a half-finished one."
Garron Blaze (thinking): "What is he planning now...?"
Zane Vey steps forward to officially begin the event.
Zane Vey: "Let the Resonance Clash⦠BEGIN!"
The crowd erupts in cheers as the tournament finally starts.
â¡ First Match â Joran Velt vs. Marin Flow
The guard steps forward once again.
Guard: "The first match â Joran Velt of the Spark Clan versus Marin Flow of the Tide Clan!"
The crowd buzzes with excitement as both Joran and Marin step onto the field and stand opposite each other.
Joran stands confidently, arms crossed, a mocking smirk on his face. Static crackles faintly from his fingertips.
Joran: "So, water girl. Hope you're ready to be washed away."
Marin (calmly): "Letâs see whose flow holds longer."
The bell sounds.
Marin moves first â fluid and swift. She twirls her arms, summoning arcs of water that lash toward Joran like dancing whips with her Aqua Serpent Coil. Joran dodges effortlessly, sliding left and right with sharp bursts of speed.
Joran (chuckling): "Come on, Marin. Is that all youâve got? Youâll need more than splashes to catch me."
Marin spins low, launching a Tidal Crescent Dance to sweep his legs. Joran leaps over it, landing behind her.
Joran: "Youâre graceful, Iâll give you that. But grace wonât save you from me."
He thrusts his palm forward â a sharp Volt Arc bursts out. Marin barely dodges, the crackle grazing her sleeve.
Marin (gritting her teeth): "Youâre fast⦠but not faster than the current."
She gathers water beneath her and rides a spiraling stream around him, striking from multiple angles with another Aqua Serpent Coil.
Crowd (cheering): âHer waterâs like a living Whip.!â
Rhea Lux (nervous, whispering): "Be careful, Marin. Youâre moving too boldlyâ¦"
Joran parries with quick Thunder Jabs, his fists pulsing in rhythm.
Joran (grinning): "Now weâre dancing! Letâs make it more fun."
Lian Vey (watching silently): "Her control's improved⦠but she needs to watch for his left stance."
He slams the ground â a Shock Pulse radiates outward. Marin jumps, using her water to vault over him and land behind.
Marin: "You talk too much."
Joran: "And you splash too little."
Shade Sol (arms crossed, a few moments later): "Hmph. Sheâs letting her emotion dictate the rhythm."
The two clash again in a stunning combo of Aqua Serpent Coil and Volt Arc, the field crackling and splashing under their elemental duel.
Lara Blaze (tense, moments after another exchange): "Sheâs going too hard⦠pull back, Marin. Read him."
Kael Zephyr (murmuring as Marin builds another combo): "Sheâs pushing too fast. She needs to bait his voltage before committing."
Dren Bolt (quietly during her retreat): "Heâs reading her footwork. She has to switch her stance mid-attack."
As Marin continues her relentless attacks, she begins to notice a rhythm in Joranâs movements â a pattern. Though his speed is high, she catches subtle shifts in his stance. She slows down her strikes, waiting.
Marin (thinking): "There it is⦠he opens up right after the third dodge."
She gathers energy, forming her most powerful move, Tidal Crescent Dance, and strikes â but Joran blocks it just in time with a Thunder Jab and is pushed back.
Marin: "What happened now, Joran? Did you get scared of me?"
Rhea Lux (murmuring to herself): "Yes! Thatâs it â strike him hard, Mari..."
She rushes him again, striking fiercely with Aqua Serpent Coil. Joran dodges, but barely. Then, sensing momentum, she prepares the same Tidal Crescent Dance again â but stronger.
Just as she releases it, her eyes go wide.
Marin (thinking): "Wait⦠itâs a trap!"
Joran (smirking): "Too late."
He unleashes a Surge Strike, striking her directly. The blast sends Marin flying across the field, crashing hard against the ground.
Joran: "Hey, Marin. Youâre too predictable."
Crowd (gasps): "That strikeâ¦! Is she okay?!"
Rion Lux (leaning forward): "That boyâs precision with voltage is unsettling."
Garron Blaze: "He aimed with intent⦠not to stun â to break."
Rhea Lux (hands clenched): "No⦠Marin⦠get upâ¦"
Marin grits her teeth, pain etched on her face.
Joran: "That hurt, didnât it? Just one move â and look at you. Your whole body carries water. When lightning hits you, it hits deeper. I just waited for your strongest move⦠and you gave me the opening."
Watching this, Lian suddenly remembers his own fight â and Bobby's
Marin, trembling, tries to stand.
Joran: "Still trying to fight, huh?"
He charges another Surge Strike and strikes again. Marin stumbles, barely on her feet.
Joran: "Give it up. You can't stand, let alone fight. You're wasting my time."
Marin: "No way⦠in hell."
Rhea Lux (tears forming): "Why wonât someone stop thisâ¦?"
Tero Volt (stepping forward): "This has gone too far!"
A guard quickly steps in front of him.
Guard: "You canât interfere. Rules are clear."
Joran: "Fine. Don't blame me if this ends badly."
He draws in more power â his most powerful Surge Strike surges in his palm. He hurls it at Marin â the ground trembling with its force.
At the last second, the lightning strike is blocked by a radiant Starwind Veil of energy.
Crowd (explodes): "Who was that?! Who stepped in?!"
Gasps fill the arena.
Marin (barely): "Lian Vey"
Crowd (shouting): "It's Lian Vey!!"
Rhea Lux (crying): "Li
an⦠thank you."
Lara Blaze (eyes wide): "Lian?!"
Shade Sol (eyes narrowing): "So⦠he moved."
Chaos erupts. The audience rises to their feet. Clan leaders glance at each other, stunned.
