I barge into my dorm room, and an all too familiar scent accosts my nostrils. I drop down to the wall outlet, shoving my nose right into the socket air freshener. When I stand up again, the oceanic reprieve vanishes, so I groan my misery loudly. Luke crests a brow when I near his bed, but I stomp on by without saying a single word to haul the window open.
âWhatâs wrong?â His voice is strained.
âDo you really want to know?â I fire back. âBecause your concerned tone sounds an awful lot like someone has a fistful of your propellers and is wrenching the snot out of them.â
His eye ripples.
âEverywhere stinks of eruptions, especially this room,â I dryfire.
He smirks. Giggles sound from under the tent.
âNot a freaking word out of you three for another half hour,â I threaten in my best Atlas tone. âYouâre in a communication embargo for failure to shield.â
I refused my private session with Nick and Elaina as it was apparent I walked into something. Or the end of something. Or the beginning of a new something. Iâm surrounded by a bunch of bonobos in heat.
Slumping into my bed, I start and finish my homework all at once, drafting three glorious words on the page. Big. Blitzing. No. Itâs concise, clearly explains how I feel, and is definitely a prize winner.
Like my Sparklet knows I deserve a reward, it starts ringing. Archieâs perfect face fills up the screen. The expanded video capacity could fill the whole room, and that still wouldnât cover the empty space in my heart where itâs missing him.
âSo, did you make anyone cry today?â he asks playfully.
âI made a big fella cry from his nose,â I answer proudly. âDoes that count?â
âYou get double points if it came out both nostrils,â he decides.
âIt did,â I brag, âand his mouth.â
âSweet hat-trick!â he cheers. âWhat was the best thing about your day?â
âTalking to you,â I quickfire.
âI know. Iâm amazing.â Humble, he is not.
âI did learn some good fighting blocks at the Stadium,â I accurize.
âOh, you need those,â he notes. âYou have a strong lead, but your blocks are garbage.â
âWhereâs everybody else?â
âDadâs working a puzzle.â
âLike a table puzzle?â I shake my head. âHeâs serious about retiring I guess.â
âA three-thousand-piece monstrosity.â He makes a gagging face. âItâs ridiculous.â
âHow many pieces did you take?â
âOnly five,â he claims. âOne for each of his adoring and perfectly innocent children. I took a corner piece for you.â
âHeâll have a meltdown!â I volley giggles. âYou know he likes to do the borders first.â
âYes, but as youâre currently mostly untouchable, I figured thatâs a sacrifice youâd readily accept.â
âWhat about Adley, Asher, or Atlas?â Iâm missing them all. The Sparklet helps, but it isnât the same as being wrapped in their arms.
âI havenât seen Atlas all day,â he informs me. âIâll give you three guesses where he is.â
âAt the Registry,â I slamfire.
âSee, you wasted two guesses,â he tuts. âHe sleeps with that stupid golden pass.â
âProbably wipes his butt with it too.â
âYes, golden poop paper,â he muses. âAsher and Adley are sleeping.â
âThis early?â
He sighs. âCarlâs back...or not back? Adley kept us all up last night crying and moaning âwould heâ or âwonât heâ.â
His air quotes make me chuckle in spite of myself. âMaybe Carl can trade places with me.â
âFat chance of that,â he shuts me down. âHe doesnât even have a spark of personality.â
âHey, can you do me a favour?â
âAnything for my favourite sister,â he declares.
âYour only sister.â I spiral my scopes. âCan you get everyone to take a picture to send me? I want to update your contact images on my Sparklet.â
âYes,â he agrees, too freaking eagerly.
âNot. Your. Butt!â I roar. âI want faces, please. Preferably smiles with all the teeth.â
âIâll do my best,â he insists, âbut Iâll probably have to hold the golden poop paper hostage before Atlas complies with that.â
âWhatever you send will be amazing.â
âI shall rise to this challenge, Sister Dearest!â
Dad jumps in front of the screen. âThereâs my girl!â
âHi Dad,â I gush. âYouâre still coming Friday, right?â
âWouldnât miss it,â he assures me.
Thereâs some commotion from outside the open window, drawing my attention. Luke gets up and closes it. Did he do that for me? Well, I do have the attention span of a squirrel. Yeah, no. That wasnât for me. More likely, it had to do with his own attention derelict. Heâs about as patient as a saltwater crocodile.
âWhatâs that face about?â Dad asks.
âNothing,â I lie.
âDo you want me to wake your brothers up?â
âNo, itâs alright. I donât want to bother them.â
âPlease, Ainsley!â Archie begs dramatically. âWeâre starving to death!â
I brrrt a laugh, knowing only Asher cooks for us. âItâs okay. Weâll talk soon.â
âEvery day,â Dad promises.
âLove you guys.â
âWe love you too,â they shout in unison.
âOh, and Dad?â I say before they end the call. âArchie stole five pieces from your puzzle.â
The camera blackens when the Sparklet hits the floor. I hear them scuffling and canât stop laughing as I imagine them wrestling over those pieces.
âIs our time out done yet?â Aspen outgasses, peering around the curtain.
âAre you gunna pyroclast the showers again without shielding?â
âNo,â they swear in triplicate.
Maverick spies my Sparklet which has reverted to my prized composition. âYou donât have to do those assignments.â
âReally?â
âNope,â Keira pops. âNot a one. Docents donât grade Sparklers.â
âHow am I supposed to progress if they donât mark anything? Are there assessments at least?â
âNope,â she pops again. âNo tests until you advance to secondary between the Healing, Fighting, or Scholar Sects.â
This sucks balls. I canât get expelled, fail out, or push through schooling quicker to leave this crap shoot in my dust. Am I all out of exit options? âHow do I get out of this cage then?â
âOnly one option out,â Luke seiches. âDeath. Still interested?â
Screw that bojank option. I donât like it at all. I narrow my scopes at the miserable scut, aiming to show him how interested Iâm not. As Iâm about to fire a barrage of salty sauce in his direction, my Sparklet pings with a message notification. Itâs from Archie, whoâs obviously eager to begin his challenge.
The picture has me laughing so hard I forget to be pissed. Guess he did good looking out. Backstopping blitzer canât follow directions for crap though. Well, I suppose he did follow directions. Technically. He kept his butt out of it. In the snapshot, heâs smiling brightly, exposing nearly all his teeth, while Asherâs having a snorgasm in the background, his bare butt proudly on display.
âCan you crop that for me?â I hand the device to Keira who zooms the image right in on the butt.
âThe pit?â she crackles.
âNo, not Asherâs butt.â I spiral my scopes. âArchieâs smile with all the teeth.â
âDonât you have seventeen brothers?â Aspen shockwaves. âHow do you know whose guster it is?â
âI have four brothers,â I correct him, pointing to the image Keiraâs gazing longingly at and has yet to crop. âDo you see the scar there on his right cheek?â
âYes,â Maverick rumbles. âWhere did he get that? Oh my dark, did you do that to your poor brother?â
âBig blitzing no!â I report. âHe got caught on a barbed wire fence running from our neighbourâs pasture when he was about thirteen. I was ten.â
âWhy was he running from the pasture?â Aspen vents.
âBecause of the bull.â
Keira fires up a brow. âWhere were you?â
âIn the pasture.â
âHe left you in the pasture?â Maverick slags.
I shrug. âSomeone had to prod the bull.â
They erupt with laughter. I just stare at the scar on my brotherâs butt, missing that wussy more than ever. Keira eventually crops the picture for me, after sending an original to herself, and helps me add it to Archieâs profile.
âWant a team sleep again?â she cinders.
âIâd love the crap right out of that.â
âYouâre not worried about marring your rogue reputation?â Luke sprays.
âWhy would I give a flying donkey fart what any jerkwad here thinks of me?â I return fire. âThe only one here doing any posturing is you, and I give zero cares what you think of me, so kindly go scudding off again like the miserable scut you are instead of bothering to talk to me at all. Best you stick with what youâre good at.â
Unsurprisingly, he scuds out of the room.
I slide into bed, and they pyroclast me. This is a relaxing as heck routine I could come to enjoy.
âWhere does your joy live?â Keira ashes.
âWith my family...â I hangfire.
I donât hesitate this time, readily accepting the reprieve my release offers me. Sleep finds me fast, but it doesnât stick. I wake in the dark unsure how long Iâve been out but absolutely sure whatâs startled me awake. My water spark is swelling inside me, filling me so full itâs bound to leak out my pores. I have to do something before my shackle roars its defiance and wakes everyone in the room.
I look over to Lukeâs bed. He has his arms crossed above his head, lying as close to the wall as possible, the furthest he can get from me. The steady rise and fall of his bare chest assures me heâs sleeping soundly. If I purposely wake him up, heâll be pissed he has to deal with my emergency. Despite knowing I need him, the stubbornness in me doesnât want him to know I do. Lukeâs going to end up with my water spark regardless. I reckon thereâs only one move to make here. Iâll sneak into his bed to relieve myself. If he catches me, heâll keelhaul me. If he doesnât, heâll be none the wiser. Good odds for any game.
I canât reach him from the floor, so I crawl in beside him, extending a hand forward as carefully as possible and just grazing his chest with my fingertips to test the waters. My water spark rushes to the connection point where it meets an open channel. The free flow is so dang different from the retractions I felt from him previously. Thereâs no pull. No tearing. No pain. Itâs glorious.
As I hit the dregs of my well, a draining sensation washes through me that cascades warmth everywhere it touches. I inhale deeply, an ocean scent drowning out everything else. How in the heck could this miserable scut smell like salty sea air?
White Horse is a wickedly unrideable wave, but this version, Salty Seabed Luke, is strikingly beautiful and absolutely inviting. His calm is contagious, seeping through my soul and filtering out every bit of rage. I sit there conflicted for a moment. Two moments. Five moments. Too many moments. The draining effect gets me dead bang. It puts me straight to sleep.
Game.
Freaking.
Over.
