"Goodbye." Sophia gave him a wave and watched as he left the room. She could not help but feel as if a small part of her was gone now, along with him.
Dr. Hemingway claimed that she was one of his few close friends, but he was hers as well. A genuine friend was hard to come by nowadays, and now that he was leaving, there was an unfamiliar sense of hollowness in her heart.
Charles stood in front of her and blocked the view. "Have you not seen enough of him? Do you want me to call him back?"
"Are you jealous?" Sophia asked.
Charles let out a soft snort and he did not seem happy at all.
The uncomfortable feeling in Sophia's chest was immediately forgotten when she saw the sulky expression on his face. She reached out for his hand and said, "What's there to be jealous about? Dr. Hemingway is just a good friend of mine." Sterling, "..."
He could not bring himself to watch this anymore. "Alright the two of you, that's enough! The lovey-dovey in the air is making me sick! I'm leaving now!"
He waved to Sophia and left the room abruptly.
"As long as they're a human person who breathes air, I'll get jealous when they get close to you," Charles pulled Sophia into his arms, his tone low and serious as he continued, "You're mine."
She was his to look at, to touch, to hug, and to kiss.
Sophia looked up at him and smiled. "What if my brother and Nicole get close to me? Will you get jealous as well?"
"Do you think you're being funny now? Hmm?" Charles bent over and kissed her lips.
Three months passed by in a blink of an eye.
There were a lot of people involved in the human experiments case, and no surprise, many of them were from the rich and influential crowd.
Most of them were like Master Harris, suffering from terminal illnesses and they just wanted to develop new drugs and treatment plans as soon as possible to save themselves some time. Hence, they pooled their money and coerced a group of well-known doctors who were the best in their fields to conduct human experiments for their use.
In comparison to Mr. Zellner's case, this would cause much more uproar among the people, and it would easily stir up social panic and dissatisfaction.
The police officers in charge of this case contacted the team from the Department of Justice, and after several discussions, they decided to keep this case away from the public and to run the trial in private.
Due to the huge number of people involved, they ended up only arresting Master Harris along with a few of the other masterminds. As for the others who were barely involved in the incident, they simply got away with a light penalty.
However, the doctors participating in the experiments were punished severely, with the exception of those who were threatened to cooperate. Nothing happened to them and they were only asked to surrender all their experiment findings and lab reports.
On the other hand, those who had gotten involved because of money had their medical license suspended, and some of them even got arrested as well.
Since the case was not made public, Harris Corporation was not affected by it.
Nobody mentioned reelecting the chairman and president, while Ted and his family did a DNA paternity test. They were forced to hand over all their shares of Harris Corporation as well as all their assets and properties under the Harris family's name and were banished from the Harris family.
As for the fact that Master Harris was still alive, there seemed to be an unspoken agreement for everyone not to bring it up.
After bringing Mr. Zellner's case to trial, it seems that everything he had done was somehow related to Justin's real grandfather Master Harris' one true love's
lover.
However, Commander Zoe did not go into details. Perhaps it was because it was strictly private and confidential, they did not see the need to ask any questions either.
In reality, Sophia just did not care about all this anymore.
The day before her wedding, she put on her crystal-encrusted white wedding dress and stood in front of the mirror. Happiness, joy, and an indescribable bitterness ros to her chest.
The gown was beautiful, but she was covered with scars from top to bottom. The hideous scars posed a stark contrast to her white wedding dress, and she really could not bring herself to even convince herself that she looked beautiful.
For the past few months, she had been controlling her hormone drug intake and started working out to keep herself in shape. She was much more toned up than before right after the car accident, and the scars on her body had significantly faded after multiple operations.
However, she was still... ugly.
Especially when she was wearing such a gorgeous gown, the contrast could not be any more obvious.
Clara, naive as the innocent girl she
et
was, did not notice Sophia's slight change in mood, and was still gasping in awe. "Big Iceberg might be cold and indifferent most of the time, but I can't deny the fact that he has really good taste! This wedding gown is just beautiful! In fact, this is certainly the most beautiful wedding dress I have ever seen in my entire life!"
Marie was slightly more attentive than Clara. "There are still a few more to try on, maybe we can change out of this first."
The two of them were Sophia's bridesmaids and they had decided to stay over for the night so that Sophia would not get too busy herself on the wedding day itself.
"Okay." Sophia nodded and changed into another gown.
On her wedding day, she had three other outfit changes aside from the white wedding gown. It was best if she tried them on before the big day so that they still had time to alter if there was anything wrong.
There were no issues with the other gowns since they hid the scars on her body. It was just the white wedding gown, and no matter how beautiful it was, she just did not think it suited her.
Sophia tried to cheer up and tried on the three other gowns. Then, she left with
Clara.
Once they left the room, Marie immediately gave Charles a call and told him what
happened.
By the time Sophia got back, it was almost nine o'clock in the evening. She washed up and got into bed, but no matter how exhausted she was, she could not fall
asleep.
When she finally drifted off, she had a dream where she was wearing the white wedding dress, standing next to Charles in the hotel lobby. She could hear everyone around her talking about how a hideous woman like her was not worthy of marrying Charles. Content belongs to
In the end, he could no longer tolerate everyone's comments and finally realized
that he had made a mistake right before the ceremony. Then, everyone left and she
was left all alone.
No matter how many times she called out to Charles, he did not stop, nor did he turn
back to look at her.
Sophia woke up from the nightmare drenched in a cold sweat. The sun was just
beginning to rise.
Lying beside her was Clara, who was sleeping soundly. She was snoring gently and wore a wide grin on her face.
Sophia, on the other hand, could not go back to sleep after that. Although she knew well that her complexion would look duller than usual if she did not get enough sleep and looked even uglier at the wedding, she just could not fall asleep.
Just like that, she was awake until dawn when Nicole arrived with her makeup artist, along with a group of people lugging the gowns and tools. The room was packed in
an instant.
Sophia's face was covered with scars, which made it hard for makeup application. The makeup artist spent quite some time to conceal the scars as much as possible,
but it did not work.
Everyone in the room dared not say a word, worried that they might say something
wrong and upset Sophia.
Clara, however, was the only one nitpicking around. "Can't you apply more
concealer here? Just a little more and you should be able to cover up that scar!"
"If I put anymore, it might not look natural any longer," the makeup artist replied cautiously.
Marie and Nicole quickly gathered over. There was a glint in Marie's eyes as she
turned to Clara and said, "The guests should be arriving anytime now, can you please check on them and make sure that they're being entertained?" "Yes, no problem! Don't worry about it, leave it up to me!" Clara rushed out of the
room happily.
Marie looked at Sophia intently and
let out a gentle sigh. With so many
scars on her face, it did not matter how pretty her features were. If only Mr. Harris had waited for a little longer, perhaps the scars on her face might have faded a little. Why was this man so eager to get married so soon anyway?
"Alright, I think it's time for you to get changed," she said to Sophia after checking
the clock. It was almost time now.
However, her phone rang just as soon as she spoke.
Marie answered the call. "Mr. Harris?"
"I'm here, please open the door." Mr. Harris's cold voice sounded over from the
other end of the call.
"Why are you so early? Sophia isn't ready yet, she's..."
Before Marie even finished her sentence, a loud knock interrupted her. "Open the
door!"
She raised a brow and walked over to open the door.
When she saw Charles at the door, she was utterly shocked.
