Everyone was stunned.
After a long moment of silence, Oscar was the first person to come around. He suppressed the excitement in his chest and his voice trembled as he said, âCharles, this isnât a small matter. Donât joke about something like this, weâll... weâll take it seriously.â
âI have slightly over 20% of the shares altogether. If you donât intervene in my affairs for this period of time, Iâll split all my shares between all four of your families after I avenge Sophiaâs death.â A jeering look spread across Charlesâ handsome face as he took in their greedy eyes.
Kinships were almost non-existent among wealthy families, though there were rare cases when there were fewer children in the family.
Oscar gave a dry cough as a pleasantly surprised look flashed in his eyes. Still, he forced himself to remain calm. âDid you say... all four of our families?â
âYes, all four of you can split it among yourselves, my family side wonât take a share,â Charles said as he scratched his unshaven chin, and despite how scruffy and unkempt he looked, his tone was unusually calm.
With one less family to split among the shares, the others would get an extra share.
Oscar could no longer hold back the genuine enthusiasm after getting Charlesâ confirmation. The shares in Charlesâ hands were no less than everything they had gotten from their grandfatherâs inheritance!
Clara wrinkled her nose in disgust. She could not stand the bunch of them. They were not people, just a bunch of blood-sucking vampires.
âCharles, donât be impulsive now, think about it and make a decision later on.â Zachary knew that he should not meddle in the Harris familyâs affairs, but he could not bring himself to just keep quiet.
âI know.â Charles had already made up his mind when he proposed to drive the Jones family to bankruptcy.
Since he had already made his decision, Zachary did not want to say anything more. Still, worry filled his eyes.
Luna, on the other hand, was not as excited as Oscar. âWhy are you willing to give us your shares? You have quite an amount of shares in your hands.â
Before Charles could answer, she raised her voice and continued, âI think youâre up to something!â
Charles glared at him, his bloodshot eyes filled with menace and frost. âYou donât have to accept it if you donât want it, Iâm sure there are other people who would be more than willing to take it from you.â
âLuna,â Oscar called out to his sister gently.
However, Luna ignored him as she kept her stare on Charles. âYouâre not dealing with the human experiment case because youâre too busy thinking about how to avenge Sophiaâs death. If word gets out that youâre taking advantage of your position to bully others along with Harris Corporationâs involvement in human experiments, how would Harris Corporation remain unaffected by the bad press?â
All eyes were on Harris Corporation now, and if she allowed him to act impulsively however he liked, Harris Corporation was bound to collapse sooner or later.
If that happened, so what if they had all the shares of the company?
The gleeful grin on the rest of their faces immediately faded when they heard her.
Now that Harris Corporation was still under investigation for their involvement in human experiments, the military personnel assigned to monitor the Harris family were still standing by. If they decided to go against the Phillips, Sommer, Johnson, and Jones family and destroy Jones Group, Harris Corporation would earn themselves a couple more enemies and worsen their situation.
Charles had already guessed that they would bring up the human experiments so he was not surprised. âIf the person who leaked news of Harris Corporation being involved in human experiments meant to destroy Harris Corporation, why wait until now?â
If the person was able to send him to prison and mobilize military personnel to monitor his family, this person was certainly capable of using this incident to bring down Harris Corporation.
However, this person had not done anything, which only meant that there was an ulterior motive.
He had just realized this moments ago as well.
His family was not stupid either, his reasoning did make sense.
Oscar grinned as joy returned to his eyes. âAs your elders, we wonât oppose you if youâre so adamant about seeking revenge for the woman you love.
Since you already made up your mind, letâs do this then. Anyway, you should drink less alcohol, itâs not good for your health.â
âWait a minute,â Luna said, âCharles, do you know who was the one who exposed Harris Corporation for conducting human experiments?â
âDo you think I would still be drinking at home if I knew who it was?â Charles scoffed.
Well, he did make a good point.
With nothing more to say, Luna took lead as they left.
âWait a minute!â Charles called out to them just as they reached the door.
Luna stopped impatiently and turned around. âWhat is it?â
âIâll transfer all my properties and assets under my name to whoever finds out the person backing Sylvia and is able to bring me evidence as well.â
Charles was no longer in the mood to play games with the mysterious bigshot anymore, but he would certainly not let the person who killed Sophia off easily.
Everyone who was in any way related to Sophiaâs death would pay the price!
Without giving him an answer, Luna asked in return, âEverything under your name? What more do you have aside from Harris Corporationâs shares?â
Charles said nothing as he slowly got up from the sofa and kicked the empty bottles away as he staggered toward the spiral staircase.
Zachary immediately began to worry when he saw this. He dragged Clara behind him as he followed Charles, leaving Oscar and the rest of them in the living room exchanging looks of confusion.
âCharles!â Zachary stopped Charles just as he was about to enter his study. âAre you drunk?â
âI am completely sober.â Charles broke free of Zacharyâs grasp and coughed violently. With one hand on the wall as support, he slowly stumbled into the room.
Wherever he went, there was a strong scent of alcohol that followed.
Charles ignored him as he made his way to his desk and pulled the top drawer open. After finding the document he was looking for, he got up and walked toward the door.
âCharles Harris!â Zachary stood in front of him and stopped him. With a deep frown, he said, âYouâre drunk, you shouldnât be talking terms with anyone now.â
âIâm not drunk.â
After all, this was everything Charles had worked so hard for in the past twenty years. What was he going to do if he lost everything?
âI have already made up my mind, step aside.â Charles reached out to push Zachary aside before leaving the room with the document.
Zachary could not help but let out a string of curses. His best friend had always been rational, but now, he was so stubborn it was as if he had been possessed by a demon!
He wanted to just let Charles be, but in the end, he still ran after him.
âCharles! As your friend, I must remind you: If you give something out, itâs impossible for you to get them back!â
Charles stared straight into his eyes as a look of bleak bitterness surged through his bloodshot eyes. âWhat use are all these things when I donât have Sophia and my child now?â
If it was not for the sole reason of avenging Sophiaâs death, he would probably be dead by now...
