Sophia kept quiet for a while before she murmured a soft response. She did not expose his lie either.
For someone in her condition, to recover as good as new was to basically replace her entire face. Was this even possible? Well, at least not likely in the next few years.
She said nothing, but she could feel a sense of dejection emanating from behind.
Victor immediately regretted telling her all this so soon. He had no choice but to switch the topic. âYou should eat more.â
Knock knock knock!
Right then, someone knocked on the door.
A nurse walked into the room. âDr. Hemingway, a patient is asking for you.
âDr. Hemingway, you should go now.â Sophiaâs voice was so hoarse that she need not worry the nurse recognizing her voice.
The nurse only noticed that someone was lying on the bed when she heard Sophiaâs voice, and when she saw Sophiaâs body, she shivered slightly as she took a few steps backward.
âAlright, can you please feed... the patient.â Victor was just about to say Ms. White when he quickly changed his wording.
The nurse did not dare to disobey him but she was too frightened by Sophiaâs current state that she could not bring herself to obey his orders either.
Seeing this, Victor frowned and picked up the bowl he had just put down. âTell the chief physician that Iâm busy right now and have another doctor go over then.â
A troubled look appeared on the nurseâs face. The patient had specifically asked for Dr. Hemingway. âBut...â
âNo buts, I am in the middle of something right now so just get another doctor,â Victor interrupted the nurse mid-sentence and continued feeding Sophia.
Sophia turned her head away from the spoon, and because of how sore her throat was, she spoke slowly, âDr. Hemingway, go see your patients, you can just arrange for a nurse to take care of me.â
âThere are many other doctors in the hospital, Iâm sure it doesnât have to be me. Open your mouth.â Victor knew better than anyone else how the nursing staff in the hospital treated the patients.
Even the most responsible nurse would not be able to treat a patient as if treating a family member. Now that she was injured from head to toe, the nurse might certainly end up hurting her if the nurse was not careful enough.
Knowing him, the nurse knew that there was no point trying to talk sense to him anymore, and so the nurse went back to Sylvia and Jax to tell them that Victor was in the middle of something and could not leave.
This was the second time Sylvia had been unable to get Victor as her attending physician, and in addition to the recent frustrating matters, she was furious. She asked Jax to have a good rest and insisted that the nurse bring her to see Victor.
The nurse had no way to fight back against the chief physician, and so she had no choice but to bring Sylvia to see Victor.
Madam Hemingway just so happened to catch sight of them when the group of people stopped outside Sophiaâs room.
Madam Hemingway was bringing a few of the hospital executives on tour around the hospital when she saw Sylvia marching toward Sophiaâs room, and she instantly paled.
She quickly apologized to the executives and rushed toward Sylvia.
At that moment, Sylvia reached for the door handle and had pushed the door open just slightly.
âMs. Yates, this...â Madam Hemingway grabbed the door handle and closed the door right away.
Her action instantly annoyed Sylvia even more. âMadam Davis, whatâs the meaning of this? Your son has refused to treat my husband twice, and now I canât even see your son?â
So that was the case. Madam Hemingway had thought that news of Sophia still being alive had broken out.
Madam Hemingway let out a breath of relief as she replied, âMs. Yates, this is all a complete misunderstanding. Vic has been treating a patient who is in critical condition as of late, so he doesnât have the time nor does he have the energy to see other patients.â
âEven if heâs treating a serious patient, does he have to stay by the patientâs side every day for 24 hours? I have asked him over twice now and he still hasnât shown up. Donât you think this is a bit too much?â
Nothing had gone right for Sylvia the past few days so she could not even control her temper and maintain her usual poised demeanor.
No matter how powerful and wealthy a person was, it was inevitable for one to fall sick from time to time, and when one was sick, one was bound to consult a doctor. Madam Hemingway had never met a patient who was so rude to her face.
âEveryone knows that I donate a large amount of money to charity organizations every year, your son has no reason to refuse to treat my husband!â
Sylvia almost gasped in shock when she heard Madam Hemingwayâs words and she shrieked angrily.
Madam Hemingway merely chuckled. âNetizens might not know the inside story as to what really goes on behind the scenes but Iâm sure many people do, no? Ms. Yates, thereâs no need for you to talk big in front of me.â
It was no lie that Sylvia would make annual donations of large amounts to charity organizations, but only one percent of the money donated were actually used to charity. The rest of the money was either given as bribes or for money laundering.
Madam Hemingway was not exactly sure about the specifics, but she was certain enough that the money was not purely for charity.
Sylvia frowned as she gave Madam Hemingway a glare. Not bothering to argue with her anymore, Sylvia stepped forward to open the door.
âHeyâââ Madam Hemingway stepped in front of her to block her. âMs. Yates, I have made myself very clear.â
Sylvia raised her voice right away. âI just want to personally ask Dr. Hemingway why did he refuse...â
Click.
Before she even finished her sentence, Victor came out of the room. âIllegal kidnapping, bullying up-and-coming artists, sexual solicitation, sugar-
mommy-ing, committing adultery... Ms. Yates, do you really want me to continue?â
Sylvia had always been arrogant and domineering. If he had not stepped forward to do something, things might get messy if she entered the room and saw Sophia.
Sylviaâs tone instantly softened when he came out of the room. âYouâre a doctor, itâs your duty to save the sick and heal the wounded, isnât it?
Besides, I can give you your due money as well so itâs not very nice of you to keep turning me down, is it?â
âThereâs nothing nice or not nice about it, I just donât want to treat your husband. Please leave now, Ms. Yates.â Victor loathed people like Sylvia who waved money around thinking it could solve all their problems.
She was self-righteous, arrogant and overbearing, and most of all, a rich b*tch!
Ever since Sylvia divorced Master Harris, nobody had dared to go against her word. However, everyone was opposing her now! First, it was Charles, and now the doctor and Madam Davis.
Her eyes turned cold immediately. âDr. Hemingway, watch your words!â
He was not just playing around when he said this.
Aside from her past marriage to Master Harris and her previous sugar daddies in her younger days, she was just an ordinary person who came from nothing. Moreover, the people she knew might be his connections as well.
âYoung people nowadays truly donât know whatâs good for themselves. Watch out, youâll regret this one day!â Sylvia glared at him harshly before she left huffing and puffing.
Madam Hemingway frowned as she stared at her leaving figure. âEven if you donât want to treat her, you didnât have to offend her so badly.â
Sylvia still had a broad fanbase and a certain influence. If she posted a negative remark about the hospital, it could cause them harm.
