Victor kept his hand on the door as he stared at Sterling and Nicole quietly.
âWe are here to sincerely apologize to you, Dr. Hemingway,â Sterling said as he withdrew his leg.
Victor hesitated for a moment before replying, âI understand where youâre coming from, Mrs. White, but after being misunderstood so badly, I donât think I can just let it go and pretend it never happened, I hope the two of you can understand as well.â
âYes, we do.â Sterlingâs face was filled with sadness as he continued, âIn the past... Soph was extremely upset when she was misunderstood by everyone.â
He tried to smile but he could not force himself to do so. âAnyway, please just keep these for yourself. We donât mind if you canât forgive us but we would like to at least show our sincerity.â
It seemed as if they were not intending to leave unless he accepted their gifts. Victor reached out for one of the bags Sterling was holding and said, âOne of it should be enough for me now, you should keep the rest for yourselves.â
âIf you canât finish all of them, you can give them to your colleagues,â Sterling said as he tried to nudge his way into the room, âHere, I donât think you can carry all of these, let us bring them in for you.
However, Sophia was lying on the bed in the room right then, and if Sterling saw her, there was no doubt he would be suspicious as well no matter how slow he was.
Victorâs eyes widened in shock as he quickly stopped Sterling. âItâs fine, please keep the rest for yourselves.â
âWe prepared this just for you so just keep it yourself!â Sterling was already half a step into the room and he could easily look into the room right then.
However, Victor stood still in front of him and blocked his view so he was unable to see anything.
âI already said so, you can keep the rest for yourselves.â The gentleness in Victorâs usual tone was gone now.
Nicole had brought Sterling along genuinely to apologize to Victor, but she could not help but sense that Victor was acting strangely today. She had a feeling that he was afraid of them entering the room and seeing something they should not.
Moreover, this was the room where the men had brought the huge storage boxes in. Was it possible that he was hiding something in this room and she had just happened to miss it when she was in the room earlier?
Countless thoughts and speculations flashed in her head, and her instincts were telling her that whatever or whoever inside this room right now was somehow related to Sophia.
âDr. Hemingway, please donât be angry. My husband and I have already eaten so it would be a waste for us to bring these back. Are there any patients or family members in this room? If you donât want the food, you can just share it with them.â
Sterling was dejected because of Sophia, but he still mumbled a few words of agreement.
âMrs. White, do you still doubt me?â Victor asked as he furrowed his brows, âWould you like to go in to inspect the room once again?â
He gritted his teeth and stepped aside as he spoke.
He knew Mrs. White would only become more suspicious of him if he stood at the door and blocked them from entering the room.
Nicole knew that anyone would be furious for being constantly doubted, but a voice in her head was urging her to enter the room, there might be some secrets hidden in there that were related to Soph.
After hesitating for a long while, she decided to take the risk of offending Victor once again and entered the room to have a look.
Judging from the look in her eyes, Victor could already guess her decision. Although he forced himself to remain calm, his heart began racing against his chest.
With Ms. Whiteâs current condition, it was impossible for her to physically move and hide. If Mr. and Mrs. White happened to see Ms. White lying in the room, how was he going to explain himself?
âI...â Victorâs heart leaped as Nicole spoke while blood rushed through his veins.
However, at the same time, Sterling spoke as well, âMy wife just doesnât want to waste the food, she didnât mean anything else. Since you donât want the rest of it, weâll take them back then, Dr. Hemingway.â
âAlright then, I still have things to do, please excuse me now.â Victor blinked unnaturally as he gave the couple before him a curt nod before he closed the door right in their face.
Instead of going back to the hospital bed to check on Sophia, he pressed his ear to the door.
âSterling, I think Dr. Hemingway is acting a little strange. Why donât we go into the room and check it out?â
âItâs normal for hospitals to get rid of medical waste or whatever, you must be thinking too much! Besides, Aunt Lucy and Dr. Hemingway have always taken good care of Soph, youâre hurting their feelings by doing this.â
âDo you really think that Iâm overthinking?â
âSoph is gone now. Aside from that, the Hemingway family has no past grievances with us nor are we connected in any beneficial ways, they have no reason to do anything that would harm us.â
âI donât know, I just feel like Dr. Hemingway has been acting quite strangely in front of us recently. Itâs like heâs hiding something from us or something.â
The two of them whispered to each other outside the room for a while longer before their footsteps fade away.
Victor opened the door once again and peeped through the gap in the doorway, and after making sure that they had left, he closed the door behind him.
âThat was close,â Victor said to Sophia as he placed the thermos food flask on the table.
Sophiaâs voice was hoarse. âNicole has always been very careful.â
The moment Nicole caught onto something, she would not just give up the thought so easily.
If Sylviaâs men found out something fishy, they would surely chase until the very end. Therefore, it was only best that as few people as possible knew about her still being alive.
The sadder the people who were closest to her like Charles, Sterling, and Nicole were, the less likely that Sylvia would suspect something was up.
Victor agreed with her point as well. He mumbled an incoherent response and said nothing more.
The thermal food flask contained chicken soup which Sophia was not suited to eat, and so he closed the lid and brought over the porridge he bought at the hospital cafeteria earlier.
âHere, have something to eat.â He sat by the bed and blew at the spoon of porridge before bringing it to her mouth.
Sophia fought back the pain in her throat and gulped it down. â... How much would my medical bills cost?â
She was technically an illegal resident now, and with no money on hand, she did not know how to settle the hospital bills.
In other words, she had been completely disfigured and the hormone drugs that she was due to take were going to make her body go out of shape.
Sophia was stunned by his words and porridge ran down the corner of her mouth.
Victor quickly took a napkin out to wipe the corners of her mouth and tried to avoid her eyes when doing so. âIâm sorry I canât help you with this.â
â... Dr. Hemingway, you have already helped me a lot. Thank you.â Sophia only came around after a long pause and she lowered her gaze as she spoke.
She was going to look like this for the rest of her life, and when she slowly got out of shape, she would surely look much worse than now.
So how could she still stay by Charlesâ side?
Even if he did not mind her disfigured face and unshapely body, was she able to do the same?
