Since Charles had already made up his mind, Yvette knew that it was no point trying to stop him. Instead, she said, âAs long as you donât regret it, I wonât interfere. Even if you do regret this in time, nobody can help you anymore.â
âI will bear the consequences that come with the decisions I make.â Charles looked out of the window casually as he said and happened to cross his gaze with a stranger outside.
The person was stunned for a moment before he hurried away as if he had been caught red-handed for peeping.
Charles did not bother to go out and check if the person was still around. He merely frowned as he made another call. âThereâs someone outside my room watching me, heâs a middle-aged man wearing a black coat. Check the surveillance footage and see what has he gone to.â
Ever since he found out that the five bodyguards he had hired for Sophia were arranged by someone else on purpose, he had secretly found himself another group of men.
However, these men were not just any ordinary bodyguards, they were contacted through the Cox familyâs military contacts and they were a troop of mercenaries internationally known for their abilities.
They only saw money as their master, and this factor helped eliminate the possibility of them becoming spies.
Aside from the fact that they asked for a higher price, there were no shortcomings at all, and the one thing that Charles did not lack right now was money.
The man on the other end of the phone mumbled a response, and after making sure that there were no further orders, he ended the call and set off to his task.
Yvette was about to ask about the call when she saw him hanging up but Charles spoke first, âYou donât have to ask me anything. The less you know, the better.â
Yvette could not help but felt a little skeptical and worried upon hearing this, but she only sighed heavily and said nothing.
After ending the call, Charles sat back on the floor and stared at the ground.
The floor and ceiling, like everything else in the room, quickly morphed into Sophiaâs face.
He never understood the feeling of missing someone. Even if Sophia stopped loving him one day, he would have threatened her to stay so he could still see her all the time.
Now, however... He would never be able to see her again no matter what he did.
The feeling of missing her was so intense it occupied his entire heart, and along with every heartbeat, he could barely breathe.
Knock knock knock!
There was a knock on the door.
Charles ignored the sound whereas Yvette hesitated slightly before deciding to ignore it.
âHow can you still bother to knock at a time like this?â Madam Jonesâ voice sounded from outside the room, and within seconds, the door was kicked open with a loud bang.
Madam Jones rushed into the room with a distraught-looking William, as well as several younger family members of the Lewis family who looked slightly embarrassed and disgusted.
âMomâââ William looked at Madam Jones with a troubled expression.
However, Madam Jones ignored him as she pointed at Charles angrily. âCharles, were you the one who had someone break my daughterâs limbs before throwing her in jail to have her wasted and destroyed?â
That was her daughter, for goodness sake! Although her daughter made a mistake some time ago and aggravated her, she never thought of punishing her daughter this badly or even die!
âI did it.â
If this was before, Charles would have spoken in an indirect manner, but now, he no longer had the mood to play games with anyone nor did he wanted to beat around the bush anymore.
âThe right question to ask is whether anyone in the Jones family has a heart at all!â Charles stood up and walked toward Madam Jones with a cold look on his face.
First, Leah framed Sophia for attempted murder, then she and her family tried to set up a trap for the White family that might cause them bankruptcy, and then she killed Sophia.
Yet, the Jones family dared to question him whether he had a heart? How shameless of them!
Every step he took forward, Madam Jones took a step backward. It did not take long before her back touched the wall behind her and she had nowhere to retreat. âIâm warning you, donât come any closer!â
Charles stared down at her and swept his gaze across the slight bump on her abdomen. âDonât treat me the way you treat my father, Iâm not interested in an old woman like you!â He scoffed.
âYou, you, you...â Madam Jonesâ face turned red as she stuttered, âI am your elder! How can you speak to me with this attitude? Youâre blatantly humiliating me!â
Charles snorted. âDo you actually think youâre an elder of mine?â
There was a jeering look on his face and every word he spoke was heavily interlaced with sarcasm. Madam Jones was so aggravated that she did not even think before she spoke.
She pointed at her stomach, and because of how high her tone was, her words came out in a screech. âThe baby in my stomach is your younger brother! You never know, I might just become your step-mother one day, so what am I to you if not an elder?â
Standing in the corner, the younger members of the Lewis family were so embarrassed they desperately wished they could just dig a hole and hide.
Leah was the one at fault in the first place and she even killed Sophia too, yet their aunt had the audacity to âdemandâ Mr. Harris to release her so righteously too!
Even if they were the ones in his shoes, they would certainly not let the person who killed their other half and baby go so easily, let alone Mr. Harris, a man who was willing to give up the Harris family for Sophia!
âMom, stop talking!â William yanked Madam Jones away, not being able to watch this any longer.
âShut up!â The second Charles heard the words Madam Jones used together with Sophia, anger burst through his chest.
How dare this woman think she was worthy enough to judge Sophia?!
Madam Jones almost slipped and fell, shocked by his sudden outburst. âYou, how dare you raise your tone! With this attitude of yours, if I become your stepmother any day now, donât even think about getting a single penny of your fatherâs!â
âHa!â Charles sneered as his expression darkened. âSince you enjoy using money to threaten people so much, let me threaten you this once as the head of the Harris family.â
âI donât care if your child is a Harris, the child will not get a single cent! Even if you marry into the Harris family, this b*stard child of yours will not be allowed to spend a single cent of the Harris familyâs money!â
âAlso, from my understanding, your Jones Group is just on the verge of bankruptcy now, but let me tell you this. In less than half a monthâs time, Jones Group will officially declare bankruptcy!â
Madam Jones felt her hair standing on their back as she stared into Charlesâ menacing eyes, but still, she continued stubbornly, âDo you think Iâm scared of you? Be careful or Iâll ask your father to take care of you!â
He was just a boy in his twenties, did he really think he was in charge of everything?
The younger juniors of the Lewis family were completely astounded at how stupid their aunt was. Did she not realize that Mr. Harris was in charge of the Harris family now?
Yvette stood in the corner expressionlessly. She could not be bothered to argue with Madam Jones anymore.
This woman just had no idea what shameless and embarrassing meant.
