Victorâs heart skipped a beat as he paused for a moment before replying, âSheâs a friend I met when I was studying in America, I donât think you met her before.â
â... I never met her before?â Madam Hemingway still thought the person before her was extremely familiar but she could not place a finger on the feeling. Her instincts told her that she had met this person before.
Well, a womanâs intuition was incredibly terrifying.
Victor gave a dry cough as he said, âAnyway, it doesnât matter who she is. Her injuries are so severe that even if her parents stood here right now, I doubt they would be able to recognize her, let alone you.â
âThatâs true, I donât know anyone who was burned....â Madam Hemingway paused mid-sentence and turned to Victor with a frown.
She had heard that Soph had died in a fire accident, and now Vic was suddenly so worried about this burn patient. This was too much of a coincidence!
The instant Victor met his gaze, he knew that she had already guessed it.
âVic, come out with me for a second.â Madam Hemingway gave the doctor and nurses some orders before signaling Victor to come out of the room with her.
Victor trailed behind her and once he left the room, he closed the door behind him.
Madam Hemingway had her back against him but as soon as she heard the door shut, she turned around to him and growled at him in a low tone, âVic, are you crazy?!â
She let out a heavy breath as she continued, âIf Mr. Harris and his family find out that Sophia is still alive and youâre the one hiding her, did you even think about the consequences?â
Victor was so anxious and jittery before when he was tiptoeing around the issue, but now that his mother was asking him upfront, he felt strangely calm.
âIf you and I donât say anything, Mr. Harris and his family wonât find out about it.â
Seeing that he showed no signs of regret, Madam Hemingway was exasperated. âGive me a reason why youâre doing this! Donât tell me...â
Suddenly realizing that she was speaking louder and louder, she lowered her tone before continuing, âDonât tell me that you fell for Soph and came up with this stupid idea because you canât win her over from Mr. Harris!â
Victor had thought that his mother was being serious discussing this matter, but when she suddenly said this...
âMy Queen, you have got to stop watching those urban romance dramas,â Victor said, âI did this because Ms. White asked me to, not because I...
have feelings for her and Iâm not trying to snatch her away from Mr. Harris.â
He choked slightly when he said the second half of the sentence as a strange feeling rose to his chest. Although he was unsure what feeling it was, it sure did not feel pleasant.
Madam Hemingway instantly let out a sigh of relief upon hearing this. âSoph and Mr. Harris are a couple deeply in love with each other. Even if you do intrude, you wonât get anything out of it. Even Ms. Jones, as smart as she is...â
Victor put his hand out and interrupted her. âI wonât become the third person who meddles in relationships, and thatâs my bottom line. Mom, you donât have to worry about this.â
He did not want to discuss this with his mother anymore.
âAlright.â Madam Hemingway nodded and cast a brief look at the hospital room before saying softly, âI canât say anything about you helping Soph this time, but if you need any help with anything after this like getting a new identity or whatever, just come to me if you need any help.â
âOne thing though,â she paused as she looked at him solemnly. âThe person who is trying to destroy the Harris family is someone we canât afford to offend. Please try to keep a distance from Soph once you help her get back on her feet, got it?â
Victor lowered his gaze quietly.
âVic?â Madam Hemingway frowned.
Victor raised his head and looked at her. âIf Ms. White and I were to switch places, do you think she should help me?â
Ms. White had given him the responsibility to carry this task out because she trusted him and he did not want to disappoint her.
Madam Hemingway froze for a slight second and tried to stray away from the question. âThereâs no point for you to imagine such scenarios, youâre not Soph and sheâs not you. You wouldnât get into this mess.â
As soon as the words came out of her mouth, she realized how âmessâ was an understatement for what Sophia went through. âI donât mean anything, but I just think that not anyone is as unlucky as Soph.â
âCan you guarantee that youâll never face any hardships in your life then?â Victor asked.
Madam Hemingway opened her mouth but said nothing.
âNobody in this world would dare to guarantee that they wonât face any hardships throughout their life. Would you want your friends to keep away from you when you encounter difficulties?â Victor continued.
Of course not, but this was the reality of the world of adults. People tend to stay away from those struck with disaster, and kept close to those who would bring them benefits. Madam Hemingway was already used to such occurrences, and she had learned to put her own priorities first.
âI canât do that nor will I do that, you donât have to try talking me out of this because I have already made up my mind. I apologize beforehand if I might drag you into this mess as well but I promise to try to keep you out of this.â Victor gave her a bow before going back to the room.
Madam Hemingway stared at the closed door with a complicated look in her eyes and heaved a heavy sigh.

Charles was brought to prison right away and was locked up in a single room.
He looked around the bare walls of the prison, his blood-stained hands trembled slightly as sorrow filled his eyes.
Sophia had once spent two years in a place like this!
âSophia...â
With blood on his hands, he worked all day and night to climb to the highest position.
Yet, he lost Sophia and their baby, so what good would all he had now do him?!
Bang!
Charles clenched his fists and slammed them against the wall. Blood flowed down from the back of his hands, yet he felt no pain.
Two years ago when she was sent to prison, he had sworn to protect her and never give anyone the opportunity to threaten her, but...
Charles covered his face in pain as a suppressed, pained growl escaped his throat.
He had a plan. They just had to wait for another one or two months and they would have been able to catch the person behind this entire charade.
When the time came, nobody would ever threaten them again.
Who would have expected something to go wrong halfway!
If only he had rejected Sophiaâs plan and chased those bodyguards away, things would not turn out this way!
Atrophy of Love: Mr. Harris, Stop Fooling Around!
ï¤Chapter 431 Iâve Seen Her Before Charles covered his face with his hands as he rested his forehead on the wall. The cold sensation that came into contact with his forehead was nowhere as cold as the chill in his heart... He was the reason she was dead. If it was not for him, she could have lived a carefree life!
âSophia, Sophia, Sophia...â His chest was so heavy he could barely breathe and he kept hitting the wall, thinking that the physical pain inflicted on his body could make him feel better.
Those people were clearly charging at him, so why did they have to kill Sophia?
The guard outside heard the commotion and opened the door just to check what was going on, and when he saw what was happening, he was at a loss for what to do.
Was this pathetic, dejected man the famous overbearing Charles Harris?
âGet out!â Charles raised his head and glared at the guard. Tears and blood flowed down his face and the menacing look in his eyes was filled with threat.
The guard felt his hair stand on its ends and he suddenly felt as if his throat had just been ripped out by a wild creature. As soon as he came around, he quickly scurried out of the room and locked the door again without saying another word.
Charles leaned into the wall as he slumped to the ground. He could feel the blood in his body boiling, but the wall pressed to his back was cold as ice.
The mixture of the coldness and heat almost burnt every cell in his body.
He had the urge to just stab those people to death and avenge Sophiaâs death, but that would just be being too nice!
