The bodyguards could have easily conveyed the message or Sylvia could have just given her a call, so why was Sylvia asking to meet?
Sophia licked her dry lips. âIâm supposed to go back with my brother, heâll suspect something if he sees me leaving with you.â
âMs. Yates just wants to see you for a moment and youâll be back in no time, Iâm sure Mr. White wonât notice,â the bodyguard replied.
âLet me go tell my brother then, or he might get worried if he canât find me later.â The more the bodyguards persisted, the more Sophia felt that something was fishy.
However, the bodyguards were not giving way. âMr. White is talking to someone now, it will be rude of you to interrupt them now.â
Seeing her hesitation, another bodyguard said, âIf youâre worried that we might try something, thereâs no need for you to be afraid. We wouldnât have waited till now if we had any intentions with you. Besides, even if we wanted to, we would at least wait for you to finish your designated task before getting rid of you.â
Sophia did have her suspicions that Sylvia might have her murdered right after she completed her task.
What the bodyguard just said merely confirmed her suspicions that Sylvia was intending to kill her to keep her mouth shut... If that was the case, should she still obey Sylviaâs orders?
It would not be a good thing for her if the old woman burned the bridge after crossing it.
However, if she did not follow Sylviaâs instructions, proof of Harris Corporation being involved in human experiments would be leaked to the press.
Most importantly, Charles was quite likely to be sent to prison again!
The leader of the bodyguards gave the bodyguard who responded to Sophia a glare and said, âMs. White, you donât actually think that we would kill you to shut you up, do you?â
âItâs hard to say. After all, youâre already toying the Harris family. Iâm just a lowly, insignificant girl from the White family, it wouldnât be too hard for you to get rid of me,â Sophia said.
There was still a chance for her to talk her way out here, but the moment she agreed to go out with them to see Sylvia, she would lose her grounds to negotiate.
The leader of the bodyguards continued, âIf we kill you, there is no doubt that Mr. Harris would get to the bottom of it. Then, we would be exposed and our plan would fail. Thereâs absolutely no need for us to take such a huge risk.â
âTo be honest, we donât plan on offending Mr. Harris. Otherwise, we wouldnât have wasted so much effort to talk about conditions with you. We could have easily leaked the news about human experiments and destroyed the Harris family just like that.â
Though he did make a valid point, there was still something Sophia could not figure out. âIf you donât plan on offending Charles, what is all this for?
Are you doing all this just to break us up?â
âMs. White, you should stop trying to beat around the bush trying to get information from us. If you know too much, it wouldnât be a problem whether we want to kill you to silence you, but you would be the one forcing us to do so,â the bodyguard said in a solemn and warning tone.
Seeing that she could not get anything out from the bodyguards, Sophia stopped asking and followed them to see Sylvia.
At this point, she had no other choice but to go along.
There were a lot of cars parked outside the Harris family manor, and Sylvia was inside one of the cars outside.
Many of the attendeeâs bodyguards were waiting outside as well, and under their casual glances, Sophia got into Sylviaâs car. A few of the bodyguards trailing behind her closed the door after her and waited outside.
A driver was sitting in front, whereas Sylvia and Jax were in the back passenger seat.
Sophia forced herself to remain calm and carefully took a seat, but she kept herself at the edge of the seat, ready to get up and flee at any time.
âI donât have a weapon in my hand now, why are you so afraid of me?â Sylvia asked in a teasing tone, just like a cat toying with a mouse.
Sophia lowered her gaze but she had no intentions of averting this question. âYouâre already daring enough to toy someone like Master Harris, I think youâre capable of playing me with just one finger. If Iâm not careful enough, I might fall into your trap and get deceived by you, and not even know it.â
Sylvia laughed. âAt least you know where you stand. Ah, if only you were as smart as that Jones little girl, who knows, I might actually like you.â
âIf you liked me, would you still go to such lengths to break me and Charles up?â
Sylvia paused for a split second before replying, âThis prerequisite youâre proposing doesnât even exist, nor will it ever be real, so why should I waste my time and consider your question?â
Sophia had a feeling that she was avoiding this question. It seemed that Sylvia was not doing this just because she did not like her.
There must be other reasons involved in this matter.
âHoney, can you be a dear and pass Sophia a hot water pad? Look at her hands, theyâre frozen solid.â Sylvia pretended as if she did not see Sophiaâs gaze on her.
Jax smiled as he passed Sophia a hot water pad.
Sophia shook her head and turned him down. She did not like using things borrowed from strangers, especially when this particular stranger had bad intentions toward her.
âSince you donât want a hot water pad, letâs turn up the heater then.â With that, Sylvia ordered the driver to dial up the heater.
The driver mumbled a quick response and turned up the heater.
Since Sylvia did not mention her motives, Sophia did not want to ask. She merely played along and entertained Sylviaâs boring and meaningless small talks.
She knew that Sylvia would possess an upper hand if she asked first.
After winding around trivial topics, Sylvia finally asked, âSophia, I notice that you and Charles had gotten much closer after that one time the both of you were left alone, why is that so?â
Sophiaâs heart thumped against her chest as soon as she heard the word âaloneâ.
âYou didnât tell Charles, did you? Thatâs why the two of you have been practically inseparable, he doesnât want me to have the chance to talk to you, does he?â Sylvia continued.
Sylvia kept a cautious stare on Sophia as she asked this question, carefully observing every bit of Sophiaâs facial expression.
Sophia felt her palms getting clammy, and although the heater was on full blast in the car, she felt cold all over as if she was in an ice cellar.
What would happen if Sylvia found out?
Would Sylvia simply keep her as a hostage against Charles? Or would they kill her straight away and think of alternatives to achieve their goal?
âWhy are you taking so long to answer me?â Sylvia spoke slowly as she raised her brow, âDid I guess correctly and youâre thinking of how to answer me?â
Sophia forced the urge to blink and looked straight into Sylviaâs eyes. âI am indeed thinking about how to answer your question.â
âOh?â There was a slight tinge of dissatisfaction in her tone.

ï¤Chapter 414 Am I Right, Sophia?
At this point, Sophiaâs palms were covered in a cold sweat. âIâm just thinking, if I tell you that we merely took a bath together the other day, you might think that Iâm lying, but even if I tell you that weâre just inseparable because of how close we are, you would probably think that Iâm lying too.â
Although she managed to remain calm on the surface, her heart was racing against her chest.
She really did not know what would happen if she was exposed to be lying to Sylvia.
âYouâre quite right.â Sylvia leaned back in her seat comfortably. âThe two of you werenât this close before, but youâre practically each otherâs shadows now. Itâs only natural for me to suspect something when youâre suddenly so close, right?â
