Jenny was quite in a chatty mood tonight, as if she intended to tell every story she had about Sophia and Sterling from childhood to adulthood.
Sophia listened intently in the beginning, but a pregnant woman was easily fatigued and soon, she was yawning several times and eventually dozed off.
She felt someone kiss her gently on the forehead while she drifted off. She was so worn out that all she could do was frown and wave it off as she flipped over and continued drifting into a deep sleep.
It was rare that she dreamt about when she was young.
Mum and dad pampered her and Sterling. Her parents gave them whatever they wanted and never pushed for them to study. Her parents even had a good relationship then and never fought each other.
She smiled slightly. Sophia felt relaxed from her heart to her body.
The next morning, Sophia was woken by a loud knocking on the door.
She sat up with a frown, looking sleepily at the person standing at the door. She yawned. âSter, youâre disturbing mumâs and my sleep.â
Sterlingâs eyes were filled with red veins and he looked particularly disheveled with his unshaven beard. âSo... Soph... Mum slit her wrist. Sheâs...
Sheâs in the emergency room now...â
â!â
A stunned look appeared in Sophiaâs eyes. It felt like a bomb had just been detonated in her mind. It was blank.
She turned to her side stiffly. There was no one there. She reached out her trembling hands to touch it. The covers were had long been cooled down and her mother must have left for who knows how long.
Sterling took a deep breath and wiped the tears from the corners of his eyes as he choked out, âThe doctor said things arenât looking good. You...
You should be quick. We might... We might still be able to make it and see her one... one last time.â
There was a ringing sound in Sophiaâs ears. She could not hear a thing.
She opened her mouth but realized there was no sound coming from it.
How did this happen?
The psychologist had just diagnosed her yesterday, saying that it was mild depression.
How could she have slit her wrist?!
Charles picked up a long, female down jacket and walked to Sophia hurriedly as he put it on her. âLetâs not overthink this. Iâve arranged the best doctors. Weâll head over there now.â
Sophia laid in his arms as her hands gripped tightly onto the front of his shirt. Her tears had been flowing without her realizing it.
She opened her mouth and no sound came from her the first time. It was only the second time that she was able to voice out in a hoarse croak, âHow... did... this... even... even happen...â

All of them rushed to the hospital.
The emergency room was still shut tight. James was standing outside. It had only been one night, but short stubbles were poking out of his face and he looked quite dispirited.
He was walking in circles outside the emergency room with an extremely anxious look on his face.
James walked over to them when he saw Sophia arrive. He lifted his hand to slap her.
Charles grabbed Jamesâ wrist and pushed it away with a cold look on his face. âThis is the last time.â
Charles would not let him off so easy the next time!
âAre you freaking mad?! Why would you hit Soph at this time?!â Sterling roared at him with reddened eyes.
James pointed his finger at Sophia with a stern, angry look on his face. âYour mum has been fine all this while, but one night with Sophia and she committed suic...â
He could not bring himself to say the word âsuicideâ. âWhy would she suddenly do something like this if it wasnât for Sophia saying something to her last night?â
Sterling replied in frustration, âCan you stop pushing all the blame to Sophia for everything that has happened? Iâve never f*cking seen someone being a dad like you! Are you even our real dad?!â
Father and son argued ferociously, both of them red in the face.
The nurse jogged towards them and said quickly, âThis is a hospital, we need you to be quiet! Youâll disturb the other patients and doctors!â
Father and son quickly looked towards the closed door of the emergency room and went silent at the same time.
Sophia had been to the emergency room numerous times. This was the first time she was waiting on the outside for someone else, and that someone else was her mother.
She stared at the emergency room door. Her eyes were empty and her lips were so dry, they were cracked. Her emotions were in a mess.
James paced around in frustration and finally could not hold it in any longer. He asked her in a rude tone, âWhat did you say to your mother last night?â
âMr. White, mind your attitude,â Charlesâ eyes narrowed, his voice was cool.
During normal circumstances, James would stop with the questioning, but this time, he was in an emotional mess and could not care less for anything else.
When Sophia said nothing, he continued asking, âDidnât you notice when your mum left so late at night?â
Sophia was still staring at the emergency room in a daze and ignored him.
James finally could not take it and said furiously, âSophia, Iâm asking you a question, stop playing dumb with me!â
âMr. White, talk like that to my woman again and I wouldnât mind turning you into a mute,â Charles lifted his head to look at James, his aura as formidable as ever.
James had goosebumps from the way Charles looked at him, and finally realized what he had just done.
He took two steps back awkwardly with his hands behind his back and started pacing in frustration again.
Sterling sat directly on the floor as his eyes focused on the emergency room. He turned his gaze after a while and asked in a cracked voice, âDo you have a cigarette?â
âI quit,â said Charles.
Second-hand smoke was not good for a personâs health, so he quit smoking.
Sterling pulled his hand back and buried his head between his knees, thinking about something.
âIâve been to the emergency room plenty of times and I turned out fine. Sheâll be fine too...â Sophia mumbled. No one knew if she was talking to herself or informing the others.
Charles kissed her gently on her head, his eyes filled with pain and gentleness and said, âYouâre right, sheâll be fine.â
Every minute and every second began to feel like torture.
Every minute used to pass by in a blink of an eye, but now, every minute became sixty seconds and every second felt like an eternity.

One wondered how much time had passed when the door to the emergency room finally opened.
Sophia jumped to the ground and ran toward the doctor along with Sterling. Her voice was trembling. âWhereâs my mum? Howâs she doing?â
James was hiding not far away. He wanted to know the results, yet was afraid to hear the truth.
âHurry up and get in, you can still see her for one last time,â the doctor looked extremely worn out as he fell to the ground weakly after saying this.
Sophia wanted to cry, but her tears refused to flow.
She could not believe what she had just heard and tried to convince herself otherwise by asking, âDoctor, what... What did you just say?â
âHurry up and get in,â the doctor was so tired that he could not say any more than that.
Sophiaâs world went completely dark in an instant.
She shook her head as she staggered backward a few steps. Luckily, Charles caught hold of her before she fell to the ground.
Sterling was standing where he was, looking dazed. He could not bring himself to go in.
â... Jenny...!â James yelled as he ran in with both his eyes red.
Sophia wiped the tears from the corner of her eyes and said softly, âCharles, please help me in.â
Her knees were weak and she could not take another step.
Charles nodded as he bent down to carry her, walking with large strides into the emergency room.
âGet out, I donât want to see you,â Jenny was lying on the surgery bed, looking ghastly pale as she pointed at James. Her hand fell weakly down.
