âDonât start.â
âIâm just telling you, if Susana starts her yapping Scar is going to kill her then we are going to have a bigger problem on our hands.â
âKayla.â
âIâm just saying.â Kayla walked away and headed to greet their visitors.
âNikki.â Kayla greeted her in a cold tone.
âKayla,â Nikki responded in an even chillier tone, then walked away heading for the back door.
âHallo Susana.â Kayla turned her attention to the theoretically older woman. She was in awe of her youth and beauty. She didnât look a day older than Nikki or herself but in the true sense, she was much older than her late Nana. This was what Kayla looked forward to, spending an eternity at twenty-three years of age.
âKayla how lovely to see you, itâs been too long.â
âThree years to be exact.â Curiously she noticed how Susana kept on looking around. âHe is with his mother.â
âHow did you know-,â
Susana cut short her sentence when Kayla used her index finger to tap her temple.
âYou read minds. I always thought the vampires had an unfair advantage. Any way you read minds and we give birth.â
Kaylaâs fist clenched at her side. She already knew how incapable she was to have a child of her own and for Susana to remind her of it was just rude.
âMomma.â Jade rushed to Kaylaâs side and unclenched her fist slipping her fingers into her motherâs.
âMomma?â Susana asked surprised.
âJade this is Susana. She is a beast and is here to help Scar.â Kaylaâs tone was so controlled she ended up sounding like a robot.
âPleased to meet you. You are very excited considering the dire situation that my aunt is in.â
âWhat makes you think- let me guess you read minds.â
âNo, I sense emotions, and yours arenât appropriate at the moment.â
âBefore I could see you in her, but now just after she spoke there is no doubt that she is yours.â
âThanks Iâm very proud.â Kayla beamed.
âHello, ladies, whatâs going on here?â Solara walked into the room just as the three women exchanged murderous looks at each other. âHallo Susana glad you could make it. You are welcome.â
âI donât feel welcome.â
âI can tell.â Jade put in.
âKayla, Jade could you please come with me. Excuse us.â Solara rushed them into the kitchen. âKayla you need to chill.â
âI didnât say anything,â Kayla said defensively.
âItâs that... that woman.â Jade groaned.
âI see your lips moving but I hear you talking.â Solara pointed at Kayla.
âWhat do you mean by that?â
âYou need to relax because Jade is picking up all the anger you are radiating. Remember our daughter is a sponge and everything that bounces off you soak up in her.â
Kayla took in a deep breath and as she began to relax Jadeâs temper cooled down.
âThere we go, and how about we donât go hostile on the people who are trying to help us.â Solara planted a kiss on both his ladies then escorted them back into the living room.
***
She stretched her hands out so that she could land on them instead of her belly. But just as she was about to crash into the ground a pair of hands reached out and grabbed her. She was hoisted into his arms and cradled to his chest.
âI knew there was a reason you were born.â She chuckled.
âI bet this wasnât it.â SJ teased.
âMaybe not but since I carried you itâs only fair you carry me.â
SJ went to put her on the bed but she protested pointing towards the bathroom.
âI need some water.â
âI can get it for you.â He laid her on the bed and grabbed the glass on her bedside table. âYou shouldnât be moving around.â He said when he came back with the glass of water.
âThanks.â Scarlet gulped it down relieved as the dryness was replaced by a smooth coolness. âBy the way, Iâm still the parent.â
âClearly.â SJ laughed then poked her belly.
âSo whatâs going on down there?â
âHow about I let Dad explain that.â SJ was uncomfortable and Scarlet could see it.
âCould you at least tell me what time it is or do you need your fatherâs permission to do that too?â
âItâs three in the afternoon. You were asleep the whole day.â
âGet me something to eat, actually to drink. I feel dried out.â
âYou are a bit skinny.â He picked up her sticky arm.
âThatâs what it looks like because of all this.â She used her hand to gesture her belly, âBut Iâm still the same size.â
âI donât think so. Dadâs coming.â SJ could hear his fatherâs heavy footsteps on the stairs. Stephanâs feet had become even more distinct ever since the problematic pregnancy. His feet got heavier and he seemed like he dragged them along. The weight of the world was on his shoulders making him heavier than he ever was.
âHow are my two best people doing?â Stephan feigned a smile as he walked into the room.
âI think you mean three. There is more of the baby than there is mom.â
Stephan looked at his wife and how tiny she looked compared to the mountain she carried around with her. And as much as what SJ said was meant to be a joke it was a horrific reality to him. She was wasting away once again and it was his entire fault.
âI need to talk to you about something sweetheart.â
Scarlet sniffed into the air, âBefore we do would you be so kind to tell me who is downstairs.â
âThatâs what I wanted to talk to you about,â Stephan said nervously.
âThis is my cue to duck, I mean leave.â SJ bolted out of the door.
