âYes, we did.â Solara was about to kiss her again when Scarlet pulled Kayla away and hugged her.
âHow does it feel to be a Mrs.?â Scarlet asked excitedly.
âI donât know how, but I feel different.â
âI know right. Congrats honey.â
âMay I please hug my daughter?â Iris stepped in between them.
âSure Momma.â She walked into her motherâs arms.
âWhat is going on here?â Dick called out.
The little crowd that had formed quickly turned to the source of the angry voice.
âOh no. I forgot about that.â Iris moaned.
âCan someone answer me, what is going on here?â Dick made his way through Solara and Stephan and stood beside Kayla and Iris.
âWhat does it look like? I thought you were here for the ceremony?â Iris retorted irritated.
âWhy didnât anyone tell me you were getting married? Kayla?â he turned to face his daughter. âWhy am I just finding out about this?â
âWhy? You werenât interested in your sick mother, so I assumed you wouldnât care that your only child is getting married.â
âBut I would have wanted to know.â
âI invited you didnât I. You were here you watched, you didnât miss a thing.â
âBut I am your father Kayla.â
âReally? Lately, you have only been concerned with your wife. Speaking of where is my stepmom.â Her voice thick with sarcasm.
âAt the spa.â Iris put in.
âAnyway, can I meet your husband?â Dick asked.
âSure, babe.â Kayla stretched out her hand to Solara. âThis is Dick Cooper my father when it suits him. This is my husband Solara Gomez.â
âNice to meet you, sir,â Solara said respectfully.
âNice to meet you too. Where did you and my daughter meet?â
âToo late for the grilling dad, we are already married. I need to get back to Nana.â Kayla walked away pulling Solara behind her.
âThat wasnât fair Iris,â Dick argued once he was left alone with his ex-wife. âDid you ever think that I wanted to give away my daughter?â
âHer grandmother suggested that but she shut it down. If I were you I would go make peace with your mother, then maybe Kayla will give you a chance.â Iris walked away leaving him alone with his guilt.
Kayla sat at the table with Scarlet and her grandmother, as their husbands and friends familiarized themselves with Kaylaâs family.
âDid you talk to your father?â Nana asked.
âNot so much talking, but yes we did have a conversation.â
âIf you can call it that.â Scarlet put in.
âKayla you are very impatient.â Nana didnât have to ask Scarlet what she meant, she already knew.
âHe just annoys me.â
âYou need to be patient with him. And here he comes, be polite Kayla.â
Kayla looked up and saw her father approaching them. She stood up and moved to another seat so that he could sit close to his mother.
âHow are you mother? You look strong, I knew Iris was exaggerating.â Dick said as he looked her over.
âAre you serious?â Kayla snipped.
âKayla, let your father speak.â
âI was just distracted with work that was why I couldnât come sooner.â Kayla sneered as he lied, the truth was clear to her.
âI canât sit here and listen to this rubbish anymore. Scarlet letâs go demand a dance from our husbands.â She took Scarletâs hand and walked away from the table.
âShe is mad at me.â Kayla heard her father say to Nana.
âHello, beautiful.â Solara pulled her into his arms and began spinning her around the small dance floor.
âHey.â She returned his beaming smile with a weak one.
âWhat now?â
âItâs nothing. I just hope that Dick makes peace with Nana. She does need her son with her right now.â
âWhat about you? Are you going to make peace with your father?â
âThat depends on how their conversation ends. Anyway, he didnât bring his wife with him, so he has earned one brownie point.â
âHow about, we only think about us for now.â He nibbled her ear, making her giggle.
âSure why not, husband.â She let the last word roll off her tongue.
âI love the way that sounds wife. I never thought that I would be married at the age of eighty-three.â
âExcuse me?â Kayla looked at him stunned. âYou are what?â At this point, there was an endearing, yet distancing silence as the two looked at each other. As childish as it sounds, this was not the like usual pastime joking.
âDidnât I tell you, I was born in 1927?â
â1927? Thatâs a lifetime ago.â
âOld? Old she says, Stephan is so old he lost count. He is over three hundred years old.â He tried to down-play the fifty-seven years he had on her.
âThree hundred! Three hundred! Sweetheart you are an infant compared to that. I guess Scar and I just like older men.â
âI hope the feeling you have for me is more than like.â He leaned towards her neck.
âThere must be a reason why I married you.â
âOh yeah.â kiss âAnd why is that?â kiss
âI love you and there is nothing you can do to get rid of me.â Kayla was dissolving at his touch.
âI like the sound of that.â Solaraâs lips brushed from her neck to her lips. Hungrily he feasted on them, pulling her closer and closer to his chest.
âMy grandmother has a weak heart. How about we keep the p.d.a to a minimum. We donât want to give her a heart attack.â She gasped.
âItâs your loss.â He pulled back and stared at her face, âThank you.â
âWhat for?â Kayla was struggling to control her hormones.
âFor saying yes. For not hating me when I took your life away. For accepting my world with such ease. For being you.â
âYou are welcome, baby.â She weaved her fingers in his hair; she liked how his hair tickled her fingers.
âSo how is the happy couple?â Stephan slid over close to them, Scarlet in his arms.
âGreat. I love being married.â Solara put in.
âK, did you get a chance to talk to your dad?â
âNo Scar, Iâll do that once this song is over.â
âHelp!â
It was the terror in the voice that got to them first. They turned towards the scream. Kayla dropped Solaraâs arms and ran in the direction of her grandmother. She wasnât sure if the panic concerned her but she wasnât taking any chances.
âNana!â Kayla froze; Inches away from where her grandmother lay unconscious.
Scarlet, Stephan, and Solara stood behind her, their eyes fixed on the old lady on the ground.
Iris was at her side in an instant, as Dick stood over her. âWhat happened? Dick what happened.â
âI...I donât know. She was fine one minute and the next...â Dick was staggering over his words.
