The day had been one of laughter, a brief reprieve from the heavy atmosphere that had gripped the Kapoor household for weeks. Aryan, still pale but determined to live every moment as fully as he could, had insisted on a small gathering—just the three of them: himself, Reena, and his mother, Mrs. Kapoor.

The room was filled with lighthearted chatter and laughter, the sound of Aryan’s gentle teasing and Reena’s giggles. They were seated in the drawing room, Aryan on the recliner, while Reena playfully braided his hair, her fingers light as they weaved through his thinning locks. Mrs. Kapoor sat nearby, watching the scene unfold with a faint smile, her worries momentarily pushed aside by the comfort of these normal moments.

But then, just as Reena was pulling the braid tight, Aryan suddenly slumped in his chair. His face drained of color in an instant.

“Aryan?” Reena’s voice caught in her throat as she looked up in alarm. Mrs. Kapoor’s head snapped toward him, her expression morphing from the peaceful smile to sheer panic.

“Aryan?” Reena repeated, her voice cracking now. She rushed to his side, shaking his arm gently, but he didn’t respond.

“Oh my God!” Mrs. Kapoor gasped, dropping the tea she had been holding. “Aryan! Aryan!”

The next few minutes were a blur. Reena’s heart raced as she helped Mrs. Kapoor lift Aryan, her hands trembling. Mrs. Kapoor was beside herself, her breath shallow and frantic as she instructed Reena to call the doctor.

“Get him to the hospital! Now!” she yelled, her composure slipping, revealing the depth of her worry.

Reena’s hands shook as she dialed the doctor’s number, her mind racing. She knew this day would come, but the reality of it, the suddenness of it, was crushing. The fear of losing Aryan, the person who had become so integral to her life, overwhelmed her. Not as a lover, not yet, but as a companion, a friend, someone she couldn't imagine living without.

At the hospital, the doctors rushed Aryan to an examination room, and Reena and Mrs. Kapoor followed anxiously, huddling together in the sterile waiting area. The air in the hospital felt cold, even though the room was warm. Reena sat on the edge of her seat, her fingers clutched tightly together. Mrs. Kapoor paced back and forth, muttering prayers under her breath, her face streaked with tears.

Hours passed before the doctor emerged from the room, his face grim but not as grave as they feared.

“Aryan is stable for now,” the doctor explained, his voice measured but serious. “His condition is worsening, and it’s affecting his vital organs. But for the moment, he’s out of immediate danger.”

Reena exhaled a breath she didn’t know she was holding. But the relief was short-lived. The doctor’s next words hung heavy in the air.

“There is little we can do beyond making him comfortable,” he continued. “His condition is beyond treatment at this stage. We can only keep him comfortable for as long as possible.”

The news was devastating. Reena felt as though the floor had been swept from beneath her. She could barely hold herself upright, but she had to. Aryan needed her to be strong. Mrs. Kapoor collapsed into a chair, her tears now flowing freely, her sobs soft but heart-wrenching.

Reena reached out to Mrs. Kapoor, offering her a quiet comfort, but her heart was also breaking in that moment. She had become Aryan’s emotional anchor over the past few months, helping him through his moments of pain, his frustration, and his fears. And now, the thought of losing him—perhaps sooner than anyone had expected—was unbearable.

Unable to stop herself, Reena grabbed her phone and dialed Varun’s number. Riya answered quickly on the other end.

“Hello my princess, what’s going on?”

Reena’s voice broke as she spoke. “He collapsed… It’s getting worse, Riya. I don’t know what to do. I’m so scared.”

Riya’s voice softened with concern. “What?, Reena. We’re coming to you right now. We’ll be there. You don’t have to go through this alone.”

Within minutes, Varun and Riya arrived at the hospital. They embraced Reena and Mrs. Kapoor, their presence a quiet but steadfast support in the midst of the chaos.

"Reena, I know this is terrifying, but you need to take care of yourself too," Varun said gently, pulling her into a hug. "Don’t let all this weight crush you. You’re strong, and we’re here for you."

Riya nodded, her voice equally comforting. "You don’t have to hide your feelings, Reena. You’re going through so much, and it’s okay to be scared."

Reena wiped away a tear, her heart heavy with the truth. "I’m scared. I’m terrified of losing him. I’m trying to be strong, but I can’t imagine a life without him in it." She paused, looking at the two of them. "I feel like I’m already a widow in some way. Every day with him is a gift, but… how much longer will I have him?"

The conversation was interrupted by Aryan’s voice from the hospital room. His weak voice called out to them, and Reena, with Riya and Varun close behind her, rushed to his side.

Aryan lay in the hospital bed, pale and fragile, but still trying to muster a smile as he saw them.

“You’re here,” he whispered, his breath shallow. "I’m so sorry for all the worry I’ve caused."

Reena bent down, kissing his forehead gently. "Don’t apologize, Aryan. I’ll never stop worrying. You’re everything to me."

He reached for her hand weakly, squeezing it. "I’ve lived a good life, Reena. But I want you to be okay. Please, take care of yourself when I’m gone. I don’t want you to lose hope."

Tears welled up in Reena’s eyes as she held his hand tightly. "You’re not going anywhere yet, Aryan. Please, don’t say that."

Aryan smiled faintly. "Everyone has their time, Reena. I know mine is coming, but I’m not afraid anymore. I’ve made my peace."

The room fell silent for a moment, the gravity of Aryan’s words settling over them all.

Later that evening, after the doctor’s final round of checks, Aryan insisted on speaking with both families. He had a final request.

"I want to talk to you all," Aryan said, his voice hoarse but clear. "I don’t want anyone to worry about me. Reena, I need you to be strong for your own sake. For Mrs. Kapoor’s sake. We don’t know how much time I have left, but please, promise me you’ll carry on, no matter what happens."

Reena nodded, her heart breaking all over again as she looked at him. "I promise, Aryan. I will carry on for you."
