PART 5: SYSTEM BACKLASH

The dreams started that night. They came like fragments—ripped pages from a book no one remembers writing. Glyphs burned across the inside of my eyelids. Voices that I didn’t recognize, whispered syllables that didn’t belong to any language I know… but felt true. And in the center of it all: a name.

The glitch-beast’s roar rattled the marble columns, sending cascades of bioluminescent code flickering like startled fireflies. My HUD screamed a warning in red:

WARNING: SYSTEM BACKLASH

STATUS: HIGH PRIORITY THREAT

A pulsing “HP” bar materialized above my shoulder.

HP: 45/50

Not bad, but I could feel the burn from that Gnat fight and the Vault brawl tugging at my reserves. The beast’s multiple arms sliced through the air, each swipe tearing at reality itself. I gripped my Shardblade, its violet edge humming in response. My mind raced.

Okay, first rule of combat: don’t get hit.

Second rule: if you do get hit, don’t die.

I charged forward. The beast lunged, and sparks of corrupted data sprayed as my blade met its armored flank. I pressed [X] and Shardblade Slash, and I felt the familiar tingle as violet energy lanced through flesh and code. Damage popped-up: –17. Not bad.

If you stumble upon this tale on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

But retaliation came fast. The beast’s claw caught me on the shoulder, sending a jolt through my entire arm. I staggered.

DAMAGE RECEIVED: -12

HP: 33/50

STATUS: Bruised (–2 STR for 10s)

A bruise penalty? Nice. My STR drop made my next attack feel sluggish. I forced a grin.

“Thanks, system.”

I circled the creature, looking for an opening. My HUD hinted at a weak spot—its core chest plate glowed faintly. I tapped the “Target” icon above its flank. A dotted line traced to its chest:

TARGET ACQUIRED: Core (Critical)

Time to exploit. I dashed in, evading a snapping limb, my AGI bonus paying off, and leapt, channeling Shardblade Slash in midair. The blade’s arc cut a clean swath across its core. Code fragments exploded like confetti. Damage read –28 (CRIT!) and “SYSTEM BACKLASH LEVEL: RED” above the beast’s head.

With a titanic screech, it reeled back, then collapsed into a mass of disintegrating glyphs. The ground shook as the code‐storm dissipated, and a calm chime replaced the alarm:

ANOMALY NEUTRALIZED

XP GAINED: +25

HP RECOVERY: +10 over 5s

The HP bar crept upward to 43/50. I sheathed my blade, breathing hard. A sense of triumph—and relief—washed over me. In one go, I survived my first real backlash.

First rule: don’t die. Check. Second rule: don’t get turned into data dust. Also check. Third rule: maybe stop eating mystery wraps before world-hopping.

As the echo of collapsing code faded, the plaza’s lights brightened again. A new path opened—arches of translucent crystal that led deeper into Velmira’s heart. Above, the HUD blinked.

NEW QUEST: Navigate the Citadel Gate

RECOMMENDED LEVEL: 2+

I tapped my chin. The XP had bumped me close to Level 2, but my bar hovered at 48/60. I could push on and risk a tougher area, or detour back to Archivist Kal for another tutorial quest. My gut, literally and figuratively, said “detour.”

Still, there was a thrill in seeing that gate crack open. My pulse raced, equal parts of excitement, fear, and “Holy hell, this is my life now.”

“Onward,” I muttered to the silent plaza.

“Level 2, here I come—probably after a few more Code Gnats.”
