The alleys of New Velmira glowed in fractured neon, each sign half-rendered by a glitch no one bothered to fix. Aris stepped off the skytram and into the hush of midnight. The cityâs hum settled around him like water, a low-frequency thrum that vibrated just beneath his ribs. He closed his eyes, feeling the code behind the concrete, lines of looping data, secret subroutines buried in the walls.
He had never meant to unlock his gift here. But when the chamber lights had flickered, heâd reached out, curious if he could slip through the cityâs seams. Instead of stepping over a threshold, heâd fallen through one.
A breath later, he was somewhere else.
The corridor was the same as the skytram station... but he was at the wrong place. The walls warped in and out of focus, splotches of midnight-blue code bleeding into chipped plaster. Arisâs pulse spiked as he realized every footstep echoed twice. He looked down at his hand and saw faint glyphs crawling across his skin, glowing pale teal.

He tried to move forward, but the hallway stretched infinitely, folding back on itself like a Mobius strip. He did what you would expect kids his age would do, he panicked. Around him, the stationâs automated announcements looped in reverse, and the voices were stuttering. âEnd of line⦠Welcome aboard⦠End of lineâ¦â
Then he saw a door at the far end, labeled âECHO CHAMBERâ, though no such place existed on any city map. He sprinted toward it, his heart was beating out his chest. When he touched the handle, the glyphs on his skin flared, and he was right back where he was before this strange occurrence.
He stumbled into the real station. The skytram lights warmed overhead, and they're back to normal again. Arisâs breath came ragged. A single teal glyph hovered in mid-air, then winked out.
He knew two things:
1. He had just âjumpedâ through the cityâs codeâand survived.
2. Next time, he might not be so lucky.
Behind him, the skytramâs doors slid shut. As it lifted into the neon night, Aris stared at his hands. Somewhere in Velmira, a breach had opened... and he was the only one who could see its edges.
The loop had begun.
