In the desolate, windswept mountains of Myene, two figures trudged forward, both clad in heavy winter gear to guard against the biting chill. The bleakness of the landscape around them was only emphasized by the absence of any other travelers.
*Step, step.*
âHah⦠huff⦠hahâ¦â

*Step, step.*
âHuff⦠huff⦠haahâ¦â
ââ¦Letâs take a break. You seem quite worn out.â
The tall man leading the way through the rugged terrain glanced back, offering a calm suggestion to the woman following him. Exhausted, she immediately dropped to the ground, too out of breath to respond.
*Thud.*
âHuff⦠Iâm sorry⦠I keep holding us backâ¦â
âNo need to apologize. Had it not been for your suggestion, I wouldnât have thought to visit this place in the first place.â
âI⦠Iâm sorry to bring this up, but⦠perhaps if youâd carry me, we could make better timeâ¦â
âIâm afraid I canât accommodate that. I made a vow to never hold another woman apart from Tanacia. Even though youâre a princess, I wonât break that promise.â
âOh, I⦠I was just joking. Just in case we canât make it back before the end of summer vacationâ¦â
With a slightly embarrassed smile, she looked away. As she adjusted her scarf and removed her hat to rest, her golden hairâmarked with the emblem of royaltyâtumbled out, revealing the face of Mezlenn Emilia Valtoria, the fourth princess of the Argantia Empire. Here she was, taking what she considered a âdateâ with her beloved Harold. Even though their âdateâ involved a grueling hike up a remote mountain, and Harold seemed to think it was anything but romantic, she couldnât have been happier.
*Gulp, gulp.*
âAhhâ¦â
After quenching her parched throat with a quick sip from her canteen, Mezlenn offered it to Harold, who watched her with a neutral expression.
âProfessor Harold, would you like some water? It might help to keep hydratedâ¦â
âNo need. Back when I was a soldier, I went a week without water and managed fine.â
âBut itâs not a battlefield anymore⦠and staying hydrated is essentialâ¦â
âTrue, but that canteen barely holds enough for one person. Didnât you say the next water source is still two days away?â
âI can manage two days without water.â
Mezlenn wasnât fooling anyoneânot Harold, at least. He knew very well that she wouldnât last half a day without it. Still, sensing that the journey would only be further delayed by her stubbornness, Harold took the canteen from her outstretched hand and took a drink.
âVery well, thank you.â
*Gulp, gulp.*
âAhâ¦â
As he drank, Mezlenn blushed, watching him with dreamy eyes. To Harold, it was a simple act of sharing water, but for Mezlenn, it felt like an indirect kiss. It was the closest she had come to intimate contact with him, and her heart raced at the thought.
*I never imagined my first kiss would happen like this, but⦠Iâm not complaining. Harold, you have no choice now but to marry meâ¦*
She endured the harsh climb and the weariness of her body by envisioning a rosy future with Harold. Each time her strength flagged, she renewed her resolve by conjuring fantasies of them together. Her mind drifted to the reason they were on this trek in the first place: a quest to find the rare Aprian Flower. This journey, though grueling, was one she had planned for weeks. During her research, sheâd discovered that this elusive flower could be used to create a treatment for the disease that had claimed Haroldâs late wife, Tanacia Brycewell Blackwood.
Her objective was twofold: she wanted to find the Aprian Flower to prove her dedication to Harold and possibly bring closure to the man she loved by offering him a way to fight the illness that had taken Tanacia from him.
*If I can convince him to protect me while I search⦠maybe heâll start to see me differently.*
At first, Harold had been reluctant, citing his responsibilities as the head of the Blackwood Estate, even during the summer break. However, when she mentioned her intentions to research the flowerâs medicinal properties, his attitude changed.
*Flashback.*
*âIâd like to explore the northern mountains over the summer, and Iâd be honored if you would accompany me as my escort.â*
*âIâm afraid I canât commit to that, Princess. My duties at the Blackwood Estate canât be neglected, even during the break.â*
*âI see⦠well, I suppose Iâll find someone else to accompany me, then.â*
*âWhat business do you have in the mountains?â*
*âIâd like to gather Aprian Flowers and study their cultivation⦠Iâm interested in developing a treatment for magic-induced blood sclerosisâ¦â*
*âAprian Flowers? You mean the flowers used to treat magic-induced blood sclerosis?â*
*âYes⦠I came across some research recently, and it piqued my interestâ¦â*
*âVery well. If thatâs your purpose, Iâll join you.â*
And so, their expedition began.
âAh, hereâs another one!â Mezlenn called out as she spotted a cluster of pale blooms nestled among the rocks.
âYou certainly have a talent for finding them. Must be a royalâs unique magic,â Harold replied with a hint of admiration.
âItâs not because Iâm royalty; itâs because Iâm talented.â
âSo, which direction are we headed next?â
âNorth⦠itâll take a day, or maybe two if we have to go around.â
âWhy such a difference? Are you getting tired?â
âNo, itâs just⦠thereâs a twenty-meter cliff in the way. We could take a longer path, but itâll add another dayâ¦â
Scaling a cliff was hardly an issue for a man of Haroldâs experience, especially not with his military background. Carrying someone else, though?
âIâll carry you down when we get there. Weâll head north.â
âY-youâll carry me?â
âI donât intend to waste any more time than necessary. The more Aprian Flowers we gather, the more likely youâll be able to cultivate them successfully.â
âOh, of course, Professor Harold! Then letâs go north!â
As she practically skipped ahead, Harold couldnât help but notice her enthusiasm. He might have been oblivious to emotions in general, but after observing his sonâs relationship with Lilith, he had learned a thing or two about romantic feelings. Although he could never reciprocate Mezlennâs affections, he had no intention of rejecting her help. Her assistance was invaluable in finding a cure for the disease that had taken Tanaciaâs life, and he could not simply dismiss her feelings.
*I wonder how Ethan and Lilith are getting on. They should have received my letter by now.*
He had a sense that the two of them were engaged in some kind of sparring and that Lilith might be rewarding Ethan for each victory. Although he felt a bit guilty about interrupting their routine, he hoped they wouldnât lose focus in his absence.
*I do worry they might let their guard down without me around, especially given their age and tendenciesâ¦*
Contrary to Haroldâs concerns, Ethan and Lilith were managing to control themselvesâat least for the time being. Though they had found other ways to channel some of their restrained desires, they were continuing to uphold the structure and discipline that he valued so deeply.
