AURORA
âYour dadâs right,â Lana chimed in. âLosing his family, meeting meâit wasnât easy. Weâve all had to learn to let go of the past and move on. Struggling with that doesnât make you weak.â
Rin sucked in a sharp breath, wincing, but nodded. âI get it, and Iâll try to stop seeing it that way.â
âGood,â Jekia said. âBut right now, we need to find Flora. Now that we know sheâs alive, she could have important information for us.â
âYou knew Flora, right? She said she came here to help Rin when he was a kid. Did you hear sheâd been killed and thatâs why you thought she was gone?â I asked.
âAfter Flora helped us with Rin, word got around that sheâd been killed. I didnât check it out myself, but it seemed likely. There was hardly any news from Lila, and we had the lycans to deal with. It was sad, but I didnât have time to look into it,â Emelio explained.
Jekia frowned at him. âI get that, but I wish youâd taken the time. There were things I wanted to check with Flora, just to put my mind at ease.â
I knew what he meant. Flora had told me about itâthe lycans working with Lila when they attacked Jekiaâs family.
âFlora did talk to me before that monster attacked us. She said her sister was working with the lycans. Thatâs what youâve been wondering about, right?â I asked.
âThatâs it. I always suspected she was involved, especially with moving that mountain troll,â Jekia confirmed.
Emelio gave me a knowing look. âI bet she also told you that Lilaâs been after you for a long time.â
âWhat do you mean?â Rin asked, looking a bit better now that his wound was clean and Vishu was stitching it up.
âFlora probably told Aurora all this, but Iâll say it too: nothing in the worlds happens by chance. We meet, we part, we form bonds that last lifetimes and beyond. Itâs all written by the fates, under the Creatorâs orders. Like your mom, Aurora was always meant to be here, in this world, in this family. She even had contact with this side when she was young,â Emelio told him.
I tilted my head, confused. âWhat do you mean? I donât remember anything like that. Did the Faerie queen do it and erase my memory?â
âThatâs possible. Sage erased my memory until after I got here,â Lana admitted.
âThe answer to that is both yes and no,â Emelio said.
Jekia looked skeptical. âHow can it be both? Either Lila had someone contact her or she didnât.â
âIn that sense, no. No one from Lilaâs side contacted Aurora,â Emelio clarified. âBut someone else did. A messenger from Lord Azrael and the fates. Weâre not sure why, but part of it was to tell Aurora that her destiny was more than just living with those awful humans she called her parents.â
âSo, it was to keep her strong until the time came?â Jekia asked.
âSounds like they didnât like her parents either,â Rin added, wincing as Vishu finished stitching him up.
âDonât move your arm too much,â Vishu told him, standing up. âIâll get your bandages so we can cover this.â
Once Vishu was gone, Lana spoke up. âWhatâs next? If theyâve been watching Aurora from the start, and so has this queen, there must be more to come,â she reasoned.
âThereâs only one queen, and thatâs you. Iâm tired of calling this Faerie the Golden Queen. She doesnât deserve that title. From now on, sheâs just Lila.â Jekia stood, offering Lana a hand up. âAs for whatâs next, we keep our guard up and let Rin heal. Then weâll all work together to figure out how to get rid of Lila.â
âIâm in. I want to see that witch pay for what sheâs done,â Rin agreed.
âI know you do, but you need to rest for now,â Lana reminded him.
âI know, I know!â Rin huffed.
âIâll make sure he does. He doesnât need to push himself,â I added.
Vishu came back in with the bandages and giggled. âYou should know better than to cross your beta,â she warned Rin, covering his wound.
âNot a good idea,â Jekia agreed, looking amused. He glanced at Lana, who was smiling knowingly.
Rinâs medical treatment wrapped up not long after, leaving us alone in the room. I helped him to his feet, noticing the slight grimace as he moved his right arm.
âYou sure youâre okay?â I asked, concern lacing my voice.
âIâm good. Just tired. Havenât slept in three days and now this damn cut,â Rin admitted.
âReally?â I murmured, though I wasnât surprised. Iâd seen how hard he was on himself. âLie down, Rin. You need some sleep.â
I arranged a few pillows for him. He eased onto the bed, wincing as he settled against them.
âJoin me. Itâs been too long since you were here beside me,â he said.
âItâs only been four days, but it feels like forever to me too,â I confessed.
I climbed onto the bed, curling up on his left side. He wrapped his arm around me. There was a comforting familiarity in this, something Iâd missed since that awful night. I was back with Rin, and it felt right.
We both relaxed, Rinâs breathing deepening as he drifted off to sleep. I was close behind, though my mind kept replaying my encounter with Lady Flora. It struck me as odd that Emelio didnât know this Faerie was alive, especially given her role against the Golden Queen.
No, Jekia said not to call her that. She didnât deserve the title. She was just a powerful Faerie named Lila.
âAurora.â
Rinâs soft voice pulled me back to the present. Iâd thought he was asleep.
âYou okay?â I asked.
âIâm fine. The painâs manageable. But I wanted to ask you something.â
âWhatâs up?â
Rin took a deep, pained breath. âYou said earlier that you loved me, that you chose me. Did you mean it?â
Right. Iâd confessed my feelings. Maybe he didnât believe me, given the circumstances.
âI meant it,â I assured him, holding him a bit tighter, mindful of his pain. âIâm sorry for hurting you. Even if Lila influenced me, I slept with Rayne. I regret it. I like Rayne, but only as a friend. I feel so dumb. It took all this for me to realize how much I love you.â
âYouâre not dumb. Weâve both been avoiding our feelings since we met. But Iâm glad you love me. I love you more than you know. Youâre growing into a strong beta, whether you see it or not,â Rin said.
âYou think so? I donât feel strong,â I admitted.
âBelieve me, you are.â Rin took another deep breath. âWeâll talk more tomorrow. We both need rest.â
âOkay.â I leaned up and kissed him gently. âJust relax. Iâm here.â
Rin smiled at me. âI know. Iâll rest easier knowing that.â
Iâd never forget that smile. It was the most genuine Iâd ever seen. I felt a similar happiness in my heart. Iâd made the right choice, even though I knew it might hurt Rayne. Hopefully, heâd move past his feelings soon. Then we could defeat Lila and reunite our family, stronger than ever.
What I hadnât anticipated was the lengths weâd have to go to achieve that, or what Iâd have to do.
