AURORA
âYouâve heard what you needed to, Aurora. Why does it matter? Youâre my beta, and I wonât let anything change that,â Rin said.
âIt matters because I need to understand my role here! Youâre supposed to be one of Jekiaâs heirs, whether you like it or not. That puts me in a position similar to your motherâs. How can I handle that if I donât even know what a beta is supposed to be?â
Rin huffed, clearly annoyed. âTheyâre filling your head with unnecessary worries. Iâm taking care of you, and thatâs all that matters. And donât worry about them saying Iâm an heir. Iâve told you, I donât see myself as that. Iâll never take over Jekiaâs position. Thatâs for Rayne, not me.â
His answer didnât sit well with me. It echoed what Lana and the others had hinted atâthat he was using me.
âRin, I didnât leave my home just to be controlled by someone else!â I protested.
âIâm not controlling you! Iâm just taking care of you!â
âBut you didnât tell me the whole truth about what a beta is!â I shot back, standing up. âYou said Iâm supposed to be under you, that Iâm supposed to always do what you want. But your parents say something differentâthat Iâm supposed to be your equal. Is that how itâs really supposed to be?â
Rin started to respond but faltered. That only confirmed my growing suspicion. He was trying to hide the truth from me. He didnât want me to think I could be independent.
But I wasnât angry. I was disappointed. I wanted to trust Rin. I liked him so much. He was handsome and had been so kind to me. It hurt to think he mightâve been using me.
âListen, Aurora,â Rin finally said, standing up with me. âI donât want to keep things from you, and Iâd never use you. I just donât want to put you through more trauma than youâve already experienced. I want you to be happy here with me.â
âMaybe you do, but I donât want you to lie to me. I like you so much, and Iâve never done anything with you that I didnât want to. Even when you said you were going to sleep with me to claim me, I accepted that. I wanted to do it, just like Iâve accepted everything youâve told me. Please Rin, donât make me regret trusting you,â I pleaded.
Rin looked regretful as he heard me say this, but he stuck to his story.
âYou wonât regret it, and Iâll always be your alpha. Thatâs all that should matter.â
âI donât see where I have a choice about that,â I said, feeling a bit defeated. I decided to change the subject. âIâm not saying Iâm scared to be here with your family, but could you try to get along with them? After everything last night, I donât think I can handle more arguing. Iâve heard enough of that from my parents.â
âI can try, for you. But I canât promise anything when it comes to Rayne. Weâre both stubborn about certain things, and I think youâre going to be one of them,â Rin admitted.
âHe just wants to help me. He says heâs worried about me.â
âI bet,â Rin scoffed, but quickly reined in his disdain. âAnyway, what happened last night? I went out to check on some strange noises, and when I came back, you werenât at the den and I couldnât find you anywhere. How did you get past my barrier?â
I shook my head. âI donât know. I canât remember.â
âNothing at all?â
âWell,â I decided to be honest about what Iâd experienced. âI thought I was dreaming, but it was like a dream within a dream. I remember falling asleep in our bed, then waking up in my old bedroom. I thought everything that happened here was a dream, and it made me really sad. But when I left my room, my house was dark and quiet, and I couldnât find my parents. Then I went outside and it was snowing, even though it was supposed to be September. There was this person at the end of my yard calling to me, and I felt like I had to go to her.â
âA dream within a dream, making you believe you were never really here. Sounds like a powerful spell. But how did it reach you? Even if that witch had become a puppet of something else, I was sure nothing could get past my barrier, except for Rayne, but heâs my twin,â Rin said, sounding puzzled.
âThe Sprites would come in there,â I reminded him.
âYes, but I allowed that because theyâre harmless. I can let in whoever I want, but I wouldnât have done so late at night and without me there,â Rin countered.
Thatâs when I remembered something else; something from earlier.
âWhat about butterflies?â
âButterflies?â Rin echoed. âWhat are you talking about? There are no butterflies around here or in the Northern Lands. They stay in the Eastern.â
I was confused. Were we talking about the same thing?
âYou guys donât have butterflies where youâre from?â I asked Rin.
âNope. All the butterflies are in the Eastern Lands. Iâve never seen one here. Believe me, Iâd remember if I had. Theyâre stunning, especially the females,â Rin said, sounding sure of himself.
âStunning females? You mean they look like humans?â
âYeah, they do.â Rin paused, looking taken aback. âHold on. Are you telling me youâve seen a butterfly that looks like it belongs in your world?â
âYeah. Just before Rayne showed up, this gorgeous golden butterfly flew across the field. It sailed right past me,â I told him. My eyes grew wide as I started to understand. âOh my God. It was like the butterfly your dad pulled out of the witchâs head!â
Rin tensed up. âThat canât beâ¦â
âWhatâs happening? What was that butterfly?â I demanded.
Instead of answering, Rin grabbed my hand and led me towards the door. âWe need to see my dad. Right now.â
âRin!â
âJust trust me, okay?â Rinâs voice softened as he touched my cheek. âWe wonât let anything happen to you. Once I figure things out, Iâll explain everything.â
âYou promise?â
âI promise.â
I wasnât sure I was ready to trust Rin yet, but I needed answers about what had almost happened to me and what that butterfly was. So, for now, I had to go along with it. But a new resolve was growing inside me. I was going to find out what my real role was in this world.
I just hoped I could handle the truth when I found it.
