Rose
The half-healed claw marks spanning his otherwise unblemished cheek make my bloodless skin crawl. I struggle to hold back my rage as he sits across from me, his demeanor serious. Heâs here for business, not pleasure, much to my displeasure.
âI can hear your mind stewing.â
âI want to kill her,â I tell him. âThe challenge canât come soon enough.â
âWe havenât decided that weâre going to kill her, Rose,â he warns gently. âMargaery is still pretty dead set on keeping her alive.â
âThat seems impossible at this point, given her enhanced powers and probable connection to the Night God.â
âMargaery will need more proof of that before sheâs convinced,â Asher replies, leaning his other cheek on his fist. âI donât want to kill her sister unless sheâs alright with it, even if it is an error. We canât betray our own.â
âI understand,â I grunt, still upset about it. âAnyways, it seems that you arenât here on a social visit.â
He smiles, reaching across the table to stroke my hand lovingly. âIâm always here on a social visit when it comes to you,â he replies. âBut we do have important things to discuss before we can relax. I also donât have much time. Gen will be out of the house for a few hours. Sheâs probably meeting with some of her allies to do some damage control.â
âWhatâs on your mind?â
âIâve been thinking about what happens after the challenge,â he explains. âThis all depends on the idea that you win, but itâs worth discussing since we donât want to be caught with our pants down if all goes well.â
âYou mean that I, a vampire, would technically be in charge of a wolf pack?â I ask, chuckling.
âYeah,â he replies with a short laugh. âSounds a bit absurd, and people will view it as such. Including your Clan.â
âI know,â I reply, groaning as I lean back, scratching my scalp. âIâve spent some time thinking about this, too. Youâll still be the Alpha of your Pack since we are mates, but Iâm not sure how itâll work if I maintain my title for the Clan. Will we rule our factions separately but also be together?â
âThatâs if they accept us being together,â he adds. âThatâs a hurdle weâll have to jump.â
âI think your pack will be more on board since Iâll be the one to free them from a dictator,â I reply. âThat might be what we need for them to overlook me being a vampire. Plus, me handing the title over to you rather than keeping it for myself will be a gesture theyâll respect.â
âThis is true. I think youâre right. Your Clan will be tricky, though, because all they know of me is that Iâm the spineless mate of a madwoman.â
âYouâre not spineless.â
âIâm not saying I am, but that is what people think of me. True or not.â
I bite my lip, knowing this is true. So, how do we overcome it?
âI think you have to talk to your Council and tell them the truth about whatâs happening,â he suggests.
âThatâs a terrible idea!â
âDoing it with them in the darkâll make things much harder on you.â
âBut what if they spill the beans?â
âTo help a woman they all despise?â He asks, arching his brow. âPlus, I trust your powers of persuasion.â
âIâll need to make it sound like itâs going to help us,â I reply, stroking my chin. âLike me, challenging Gen isnât just to help you but also to help us. We have the angle that sheâs amassing an enormous amount of power from dark magic, which could be used against us after she rolls through River Run. Plus, weâd be part of that war after declaring ourselves allies of River Run. Sheâs a danger to our Pack and needs to be eliminated, and theyâll easily agree with that. But being mates with you? Being your Luna? I donât see how I could spin that as being beneficial to them.â
âMy Pack and your Clan would have a permanent alliance,â he counters. âThatâs good.â
âNot when your Pack has such a terrible reputation at the moment. Especially if Gen goes through with an attack before we challenge her.â
âHmm,â he huffs, both of us sitting silently as we think.
Then, my eyes light up, my posture straightening.
âOh,â I announce. âOh! Oh!â
âWhat?â He asks, matching my posture.
âItâs risky, but I think Iâve got it,â I tell him. âI need to contact Victor to get a Council meeting together ASAP. When will you be available to meet again?â
âWhatâs your idea, Rose?â
My mind is buzzing as I pull out my phone and text Victor. Before the meeting, Iâll have to brief him on my plan so he isnât blindsided. He may disagree with it at first, but he will back me up with them no matter what.
âRose!â
âAnswer my question please, my love,â I ask again as I stand, watching my phone as Victor begins typing.
âI-I can probably see you tomorrow night. Iâll find a way to sneak out.â
âGood, weâll meet here tomorrow night. Iâll ensure the coast is clear. And you mask your scent like youâve been doing.â
My phone buzzes with Victorâs text.
I sent out an email and made sure to include that itâs an urgent and mandatory meeting. Iâll be at your office in five minutes.
âWhatâre you planning?â Asher asks again.
âVictor is on his way. I need to have a discussion with him before the Council meeting starts in thirty minutes.â
âYou were able to get one together so quickly?â He exclaims, surprised.
I begin pushing him out the door, my hands on his back. I bite my lip and feel his back muscles flex, his large shoulders prominent as he places either hand on the doorframe, chuckling as he asks, âWhyâre you kicking me out?â
âBecause I have business to conduct, and Iâm too horny to have you around for too long,â I throw out. âIâll tell you how the meeting goes.â
âWhatâre you proposing at this meeting!â He cries, whipping around. âWhatâs churning in that big brain of yours?â
âIâll tell you tomorrow night,â I answer with a smirk. âThis is your punishment for teasing me last time. When you wouldnât let me kiss you.â
âYou little stinker!â He exclaims as I open the door, pushing him out of it playfully.
âGo before someone spots you, my love,â I say, blowing him a kiss just as I see Victor coming up the path. âIâll see you soon.â
He sighs, his smile telling me everything I need to know about whatâs coming my way the next time I see him, even if the subject matter weâre discussing is no laughing or sexy matter.
Leave it to us, though, to turn it into that.
Leave it to us.
