chapter ten
-
as the heretic quietly crept into the Salvatore home, she used her vamp hearing to hear voices down on the cellar. before they hear her, she searches the house for one of the last stakes that can kill her siblings. she knew the Salvatores well, so she easily found one of them in the pile of wood for the fireplace. she vamp speeds to the cellar, but waits to enter.
"-the thing is, he's me. I'm not compelled, I'm not possessed, there's no humanity switch. what drives him is me" Alaric speaks from inside the cell.
"no, no, he's not you. he's the darkest parts of you. the parts we all have" Stefan reassures him. Alex smirked. she expected Elena to be there, but Stefan was even better.
Alex enters the cell, "well, this is depressing, isn't it?" she fake frowns, leaning against the cell door, "my history teacher is hexed by black magic"
Stefan stands up in alert, "oh, and I found this..." Alex adds on, showing them the stake she found, "...upstairs. now, according to Damon, there should be one more"
"yeah, well it's gonna take a little more time"
Alex scoffs, "why? because we're waiting for that one to pass out?" she points to Alaric, "no thanks. I think I'll just kill him"
"well, then you won't know the location of the other stake"
Alex shrugs, walking over to Alaric, "I can live with that"
Stefan blocks her, "well, I can't. when we staked Finn, we discovered that killing an Original vampire killed its entire bloodline. now, I know that you were turned by Klaus, and you turned me, which means we both die if he does. so why don't we just find the stake, destroy it, so we can all be safe?"
"so, the fate of the entire vampire race depends on you finding a stake?" she turns to Alaric, "and to get it we need you to pass out... which means that I feel totally justified doing this," she walks over to Alaric and snaps his neck.
"there. sleeping like a little baby... I wonder if he likes to count sheep in his sleep... or maybe dead founders"
Alex arrived home, hoping to tell her brother about killing Alaric so that when he woke up he would tell them where the stake was, but when she walked into the parlor, her mother stood at the fireplace. her face quickly went from shock to anger. her mother tried to kill her family, and make her suffer for eternity as punishment for surviving.
"what are you doing here, mother?" Alex asked. she felt a chill run down her spine as her mother walked closer to her, something wasn't right.
"I'm dying, Aleksandra" Ester says, "I need you to help me live"
Alex snorted, "why would I do that? so you can try to kill my siblings again? put me under another immortal slumber? yeah, I'll pass"
Ester grabbed her youngest daughter's hands, "I did it for you, Aleksandra. you hold more power than you know. If you had just stayed a witch then you could've been the most powerful witch to ever live. you could've helped me destroy the monsters I created"
Alex pulls back from her mothers grasp, "I'm like this because of you, mother! the coven hated me because I'm a siphoner and they made you put me under that spell because I was more powerful than them! you ruined my life!"
"Aleksandra, please-"
"you are no longer my family! you have disgraced this family. your hatred and paranoia created vampires, got yourself killed, and got Finn killed," she approached her mother with tears welling up in her eyes, "I would rather let the darkest parts of myself take over than ever help you"
Ester nodded, "very well then," she narrowed her eyes and Alex fell to the ground in pain, "you've given me no choice but to do this the hard way"
"Nemi blir kraften tegnet kurse mente fra" Ester chants, weakening her daughter's mind so she can easily control it. Alex falls to the ground, weak and unable to move, and Ester pulls out a poppet. she cuts her daughters hand to draw blood and lets that sink into the poppet as a binding agent.
Alex looks up in fear, "why are you doing this?" she asks weakly. her mother was going to control Alex so that she would do whatever she wanted. she could control her mind and access her memories in order to alter her psyche.
Ester places a hand on the side of her daughter's temple, "I have watched you for 1,000 years, Aleksandra. I watched you during your happiest moments, and your darkest ones. you are the key to destroying the curse I created. and once this is over, you will live on. just as I promised"

Alex felt different. and it wasn't just the fact that her mother held control over her and forced her to embrace dark magic. she felt an overwelming surge of power, yet she was calm. all her life, she had heard stories about witches being consumed by dark magic and doing the most horrendous things, but what they never shared was how amazing it felt.
she had been controlled by black magic once before, about 300 years ago, but she didn't remember it. so this felt like the first, and she loved it.
once Ester had completed the spell the night before and Alex was knocked unconscious, Rebekah walked in, had a chat with their mother, and then Ester died. but Ester put her soul into Rebekah's body in order to trick Klaus and get the white oak stake and get Dark Alaric on her side.
now, Ester was back in her own body, Rebekah was daggered, and Alex was at the school setting up the 20s decade dance.
"you know, if Rebekah wanted to hang up this monstrosity, she should've shown up to do it herself," Caroline goraned, holding a chandelier. Alex walked over and took it from her grasp.
"Rebekah is a bit occupied, so i'm in charge now," she grinned. a girl walked by them and Alex stopped her, "be a doll and find a place to hang this," she compelled the girl.
Elena and Caroline stood in confusion as Alex turned to Matt and Jeremy, "dumb and dumber! you cannot just hang the stars, they are supposed to trickle down and represent the night sky!" she rolled her eyes and turned back to the girls, "you children have no idea how to throw a dance"
Caroline crossed her arms over her chest, "what are you doing here?"
Alex grinned at the young vampire's hatred for her, "I'm throwing a dacade dance. is that not obvious, barbie?" she then turns to back to the boys, "Matt, darling, a word please?"
Matt looked over at Jeremy, who shrugged - having no idea what Alex wanted since he had barely spoken to the girl after Elena made him promise to stay away from her - so Matt sighed, getting down the ladder and walking to the girls, "is everything okay?"
"yes, everything is fine. it's just that Rebekah is feeling a bit under the weather so she wants me to take you to the dance as her replacement" she smiles, batting her eyes in order to charm the boy. Matt was curious as to what happened to Rebekah, but agrees nevertheless. he had to admit, Alex was hot, and going to the event with a hot date didn't bother him. though his friends aren't too thrilled.
"seriously, Matt?" Caroline scoffs, "you're going to take the she-devil to the dance?"
Alex pursed her lips, "do I sense some jealously? aren't you with Tyler?" she smirked, then looked over at the doppelganger who hadn't said a word since the heretic walked in, "Elena, you've been awfully quiet for once. tell vampire barbie that she has nothing to worry about"
Elena sensed something us up with Alex. the two were friends for a short time, but she noticed the other was acting strange. she went along with the change of plans, seeing as she didn't want to be more on the heretics bad side than she already was, "yeah, Caroline, it's fine. Alex won't hurt him"
Caroline widens her eyes at Elena defending Alex, a murderer Mikaelson, but groans, "whatever, Elena,"
with that, Alex smirks, waving goodbye, and struts out of the cafeteria.

Alex wore one of her actual flapper dresses from the 20s to the dance. her family loved to keep clothes from the decades, and this one was her favorite. the 20s were her prime time. she was free to live her life the way she wanted without her brothers hovering over her, and she was happy. but now, she was in danger, she was consumed by black magic, and her mother held big plans for the night.
Matt, the token blonde human, picked Alex up from her house for the dance. much to his surprise, Alex was actually more tolerable than before. she seemed carefree and a slight bit nicer, but he knew people like her, her niceness wouldn't last long.
the heretic walked arm in arm with the human into the dance, and if looks could kill, Alex would be buried six feet under by Caroline and Bonnie's glare.
Matt noticed his friends glares and sighed, "are you sure this was a good idea?"
Alex patted his arm, "come on now, Matt. taking an all powerful heretic to a dance isn't so bad... I don't bite... much," a fast tempo song began to play and Alex grabbed the boys hand with a smirk, "let me show you how we danced in the 20s"
the two danced for what felt like hours, Alex had to make sure Matt didn't leave her side, and that wherever he went, she made sure he would take her with him. and just like before, she was nice to him and laughed as she told him about the twenties. while she danced with the human, her carefree attitude wasn't an act. it felt nice to feel like a normal girl at a school dance, laughing and dancing with a cute boy and forgetting about the chaos going on around them.
a slow song came on and as Alex danced with Matt. she placed her arms loosely around his shoulders as he gently held her waist. they had to seem like a normal pair of teens, while also being cautious because they were on different sides of this supernatural war. as they swayed to a song Alex recognized from her time in twenties, she glanced around and noticed Caroline and Klaus dancing. she scanned the crowd more and noticed Tyler standing on the edge of the dance floor, a glare on his features as he watched his girlfriend dance with the devil.
Alex looked back to Matt with a furrowed brow at the appearance of the young hybrid, "how long has Tyler been back?"
he shrugged, "don't know. Caroline went to see him yesterday," he lifted a brow, feeling protective over his best friend, "why do you care?"
Alex laughed, but her heart skipped a beat as she spoke her next words. she was lying through her teeth, "darling, I don't care about anyone," a switch flipped in her brain and her eyes turned completely black, "so unless you want to be my dinner, I suggest you lead me to your friends"
in fear, Matt lead the heretic towards one of the halls where the Salvatore's, Klaus, Bonnie, Jeremy, and Bonnie's date Jamie stood. but before they reached the hall, she pulled him away and slammed him against the lockers.
"sorry, blue eyed beauty, but I'm suddenly feeling very hungry," veins crawled down her face as she showed her fangs, and then she pierced them into his neck, enjoying the quick taste of his blood. she pulled away with his blood decorating her lips and harshly grabbed his shirt, "now it's time for the fun part"
as they approached the hallway, Klaus held Jamie up, choking him, "-not until you get us out of here," the hybrid glared at the young boy.
Alex threw Matt onto the floor, the fresh vampire bite mark on his neck on display for his friends to see. she wiped the blood from her lips, "none of you are leaving," she smirked. she raised her hands to make the vampires fall to the ground with aneurysms. she waved her hand and the vampires immediately passed out. Bonnie moved to stop the heretic with her own magic.
"you're brave, Bonnie Bennet. but today is not your day to shine" Alex glared at Bonnie, her eye flowing into a endless pit of solid black, "Lecutio maxima!" the heretic generated a powerful spark of blue energy and fired it at the young witch. Bonnie fell to the ground, unconscious, and Alex turned to see the scared humans.
"Jeremy, run!" Matt yelled, holding his neck to stop the bleeding. the gilbert boy ran out of the hall immediately.
"Mittent" the heretic raised her hand and Matt flew to the wall, the magic pinning him there as Alex approached him, "I will admit, I had a fun time with you tonight, darling. it's a shame that today you were just a way for me to stop your friends plans" the girl laughed sinisterly. she leaned closer to him to whisper in his ear, "Ester and I have big plans for-"
Jeremy had driven a stake through her back and to her heart before she finished her sentence. the magic holding Matt was released and he fell to the floor. Alex's body began to desiccate as her body turned grey and veins followed. she then fell to the floor, dead.
but what they didn't know was that the girl had a certain spell placed on her long ago. she became like her siblings, unable to die but anything but a powerful weapon of destruction. fortunately for Alex, her weapon was no where to be seen for a very long time.
Matt, trying to catch his breath, turned to Jeremy, "are you sure she's dead?"
Jeremy shrugged, eyes wide from what he just did, "guess we'll find out"

Alex awoke a couple hours later in her bed. she had no memory of what her mother had done, but still felt the dark magic coursing through her veins. she didn't remember using any spells, going to the dance, nothing. as always, no one on the other side spoke to her, but she did see her mother, so obviously the good guys won whatever battle they faced that night. she sat up and saw Klaus sitting on the edge of her bed.
"Ester and Alaric are dead. she tried to make him like Mikael and failed. she used a mind controlling spell to make you stall everyone at the dance," Klaus said, not daring to look at his sister.
"what did I do, Nik?" she asked in a quiet voice, scared if she repeated past events.
Klaus chuckled, knowing exactly what she was thinking, "you weren't as bad as I thought you'd be. just made it difficult for us to stop mother. though Elena's brother did kill you. it's a good thing the immortality spell was placed on you or else you'd be on the other side with mother dearest for eternity," Klaus stood up and walked to the door, "I'm leaving tomorrow. It would be wise to join me"
Alex shook her head with a scoff. of course he would run away, "I'm not leaving, Nik."
this caused the hybrid to scoff as well, "these people don't trust you, Alek. If you come with Rebekah and I at least you'll have family"
Alex walked over to her brother, pointing a finger at him, "you ruined my family the second you used those daggers on them. thanks to you, I have no one"
Klaus clenched his jaw, "you have me. you have Rebekah. what else do you want?"
"I want love!" Alex exhaled, a look of pleed on her face, "I want to find love again, Niklaus"
"don't tell me you still like Tyler," Klaus scoffs. the thought of his first hybrid and his sister dating did not sit well. but then it hit him, "or is it your dearest Stefan?"
"never bring those names up again!" Alex spat through her teeth. she grabs her purse from the chair beside her and walks out.
"where are you going?" Klaus yells out.
she turns her head, "I'm done, Niklaus. I'm not doing your stupid revenge games anymore," she then chuckles, "I'd like to see how long you'd last without me"
