"Catch it!"
Noah's voice rang out across the football field, breaking through the cacophony of cheering teammates and the sharp thud of cleats against the grass. Anderson High's varsity football team was in full swing, preparing for the big game against Western Valley High next week.
"Can we go back inside now?" I asked Amelia, squinting against the bright sun. "It's like an oven out here. We'll still hear the bell ring."
Amelia, however, had other plans. She was glued to the sight of Noah, a wide grin plastered across her face as she cheered him on. "But I want to watch! Look at him!" she squealed, and I couldn't help but cringe at her enthusiasm. It was hard to comprehend why a simple smile from him could send her into a fit of giggles.
"Amelia, he's not smiling at you," I pointed out, rolling my eyes. "He might be smiling at both of us, sure, but it's not like he has eyes for you specifically."
She pouted, hands on her hips. "It counts! He's practically a football god!"
A brief moment passed as Noah glanced our way, and Amelia nearly jumped out of her skin, slapping my arm in excitement. I winced, rubbing the spot she hit. "Oh my gosh! Did you see that?"
"Yes, I did. It's not a big deal," I replied, trying to downplay the whole situation. But there was something about the way Noah had smiled that made me uneasy.
"What are you doing?" Amelia's voice broke through my thoughts as I began packing my things. She looked genuinely confused, tilting her head.
"I'm going back inside," I said firmly. "You can sit here and worship Noah all you want, but I'm not risking being late to class for a football practice."
"Oh, hey!" A familiar voice called out, interrupting our banter. Logan jogged over, slowing to a stop in front of us, breathless. "What are you two doing out here?"
"We came to watch Noah practice," Amelia chimed in, and I shot her a look, willing her not to mention my earlier reluctance.
"Oh. Well, if I were you, I'd head back inside," Logan advised, casting a glance at the sun overhead. "It's scorching, and the coach will have your heads if he sees you skipping class."
I nodded, thankful for the change in topic. "Yeah, we should probably get back."
"Right. Let's go!" Amelia said, grabbing my wrist and pulling me along. Just before we turned to leave, she tossed a casual, "Say hi to Noah for me!" over her shoulder, a giggle escaping her lips. I almost rolled my eyes again, but the urge to keep my sanity intact held me back.
"Are you insane?" I whispered to her as we walked away, barely containing my irritation.
"Crazy in love!" she replied cheekily, and I couldn't help but shake my head, trying to suppress a smile.
As we walked, the scene at the football field unfolded like a movie: players running, shouting, the smell of freshly cut grass wafting through the air. I glanced back just in time to catch Noah waving us goodbye. A smile crept onto my face without my permission.
"What?" Amelia nudged me.
"Nothing," I lied, quickly turning away. But the smile lingered.
"Cayden, catch!" Another player shouted, and the ball soared through the air. I felt my heart skip a beat as I turned to see Cayden, the notorious bad boy of our school, snatch it effortlessly. Our eyes locked for a fleeting moment, and it felt like the world faded away.
"Cold stare," Amelia commented, snapping me out of my thoughts as we walked into the school.
"Yeah, I noticed. No need to point it out," I replied, still lost in my own head.
The school bell rang just as we stepped inside, signaling the end of break. I took a deep breath, readying myself for the dull routine of classes ahead. Chemistry was next, followed by Ancient History and Literature, then finally lunch. Just a few more hours to go.
Cayden and I hadn't spoken in days, not since that awkward moment in Chemistry where he had caught me staring. I had no interest in furthering our nonexistent relationship. The less we talked, the better, right? Seeing his face was enough to send my mood plummeting from high to low.
Yet, despite my best efforts to convince myself otherwise, I couldn't shake the fact that he was undeniably gorgeous. Not the dreamy kind that made hearts flutter but rather a dangerously charming kind that sent shivers down my spine.
"Are you okay? You look a little out of it," Amelia asked, snapping me back to reality.
"Just tired," I replied, pushing thoughts of Cayden aside. "What happened with you and your best friend yesterday?"
"Oh, nothing much. Just another boring day in Physics class," she said with a sigh, "and I missed the drama in the cafeteria!"
"Seriously, what's wrong with you?" I laughed. "What kind of excitement do you expect in Physics?"
"The kind that comes from watching Jeff hit Mr. Muller where it hurts!" she exclaimed, making me snicker.
"Why would Jeff do that?"
"Because the topic was too boring!" she rolled her eyes dramatically as we parted ways to our classrooms, her laughter echoing behind me.
Lunchtime finally arrived, and my stomach growled in response to the enticing aroma wafting through the cafeteria. Amelia and I sat together, and she eagerly recounted the morning's events, but my mind wandered. I couldn't focus on anything with my stomach growling like a beast.
"Let's eat outside!" Amelia suggested again, her eyes sparkling.
I groaned, shaking my head. "No way. I'm not melting in that heat for a chance to see Noah practice again."
"Fine, but I'll be thinking about it while I eat!" she teased, leading the way to the lunch line.
After getting our trays, I turned to her. "So, what was so exciting about Jeff hitting Mr. Muller?"
She waved her hand dismissively. "You had to be there! The whole class erupted! It was golden!"
Just then, someone bumped into me hard, and my milk carton flew into the air like a scene from a slapstick comedy. It splattered everywhereâespecially on Katie, the resident queen bee of drama.
"What the hell?!" she shrieked, her shirt now a splotchy mess of white and chocolate milk.
My heart raced as all eyes turned to us, and I felt the heat of embarrassment rise in my cheeks. Katie stalked toward me, anger radiating off her like a force field. "You did this on purpose, didn't you?!"
"Iâ" I began, but before I could explain, she grabbed my hair, yanking me down. "Ow! Stop it!" I cried, but it was like trying to reason with a tornado.
Amelia was quick to intervene, but before she could reach me, Katie's friends latched onto her, dragging her into the chaos.
"You're a bitch!" Katie spat, and I could barely process the words before I felt the sting of her slap across my face.
"Hey!" I exclaimed, shocked. "You're insane!"
Before I could react, I slapped her back out of sheer reflex.
"Wow, look at you! You want to play?" she sneered, fury dancing in her eyes.
Before things escalated further, I shut my eyes, bracing for the next hit. I felt stupid, waiting for pain, but when I opened them, I saw a figure blocking Katie's fury.
"Cayden?"
His presence was like a sudden gust of wind in a storm. He had stepped in front of me, grabbing Katie's wrist mid-swing. "Let her go," he said coolly, dropping her hand as if it burned him.
"Cayden, she started it!" Katie whined, her tone dripping with indignation.
"She didn't start anything. You're just jealous," he replied, rolling his eyes.
"M-me? Jealous? Of her?" Katie stuttered, her confidence faltering.
Cayden turned to me, and I was momentarily lost in his gaze. "Let's go," he said, grabbing my wrist and pulling me away.
"Wait, what just happened?" I breathed, still processing the chaos as we stepped outside the cafeteria, the sunlight pouring down like a blessing.
Cayden dropped my hand as soon as we were clear of the fray. "Just stay away from her. Don't waste your time on people like that," he advised, his tone surprisingly gentle.
"Uh, thanks," I murmured, my heart racing in disbelief. Was Cayden really helping me?
He shrugged, glancing back toward the cafeteria where Katie's voice was still ringing out. "I don't want to see you hurt. Just... be careful next time."
With that, he turned and walked away, leaving me standing there, unsure of how to process what had just happened.
I watched him disappear into the crowd, a strange mixture of gratitude and confusion washing over me. Maybe I had misjudged him all along.
"Thank you," I whispered to myself, the weight of the moment settling around me as I turned to head back inside.
