Chapter 45 âWalt.â
I knew the driver was heading toward the Iron Crown Pack, but I wasnât going back tonight.
Just because I agreed with Garrett didnât mean I was looking forward to what would probably be the worst week of my life in recent memory.
Given that Kane hadnât let me breathe for even a single day, staying in his pack for a week was basically giving him a free pass to make my life hell.
âWhy am I being so soft? Damn it! I canât even stand up for myself,â I thought.
âMiss? Is everything okay?â The driver glanced back at me, concerned.
âTake me to a hotel.â
He shook his head, eyes wide with fear.
âAlpha Magnus will have my head.â His voice trembled. âI canât let you stay in this territory another day.â
âIâll handle him. Donât worry about it. Iâm planning to stay for a week.â
The driver had no choice but to comply. He started the car and plugged a fiveâstar hotel into the GPS.
I gazed out the window, feeling the cool air tickle my nose. My eyes dropped to my lap. I wanted to call Magnus so many times but couldnât bring myself to dial his number.
Heâd be furious if he found out I chose to stay. I knew Axel wouldnât back me up either. So I called the one person in my family who always had my back â my dad.
âDad.â I said as soon as he picked up.
âSelene, are you on your way home yet?â His question caught me off guard. âNo, Dad,â I said quietly.
âOh, then stay put for tonight. Leave tomorrow.â
I was surprised. âWhy, Dad?â
âThat pack is dangerous. I donât want you traveling at night.â
âDad, I need to tell you something.â My voice was barely above a whisper.
Sensing something was wrong, he asked, âWhatâs going on, sweetheart? Everything okay?â
I took a deep breath. Better to be straightforward about it.
âDad, everythingâs fine. But I need to stay here for a week.â
The line went dead silent for a few seconds.
âDad?â
âWhy? Did seeing him again change your mind?â
I was shocked. He thought Iâd gone soft after seeing Kane, but that wasnât it at all. My reasons were completely different.
âWhat? No, Dad. This has nothing to do with Kane. I canât stand the sight of him. Itâs about his father.

= Menu âDad, please understand. Alpha Garrett always treated me like his own daughter. Even though I was just his gammaâs adopted kid who everyone else ignored, he always showed me respect. How can I turn my back on him when he needs help?â
I tried explaining to my father. When I was an orphan and my adoptive parents mistreated me, Alpha Garrett was the one who saw my potential.
âHeâs asking you for the cure?â my father asked.
He was getting the wrong idea, thinking Alpha Garrett was being greedy. I quickly corrected him.
âNo, Dad. Iâm offering to help. The doctors say the treatment needs a week to work, so he just wants me to stick around until then.â
I silently prayed heâd give me his blessing. If he agreed, he could help manage Magnus too.
âDad, please.â
âSelene, youâre a grown woman. You have every right to make your own choices. If you want to stay, I wonât stand in your way.â
His tone made it clear he wasnât happy with my decision. But he was letting me know that since Iâd have to live with the consequences, heâd respect my choice.
I sighed. âThanks so much, Dad.â
âWhat about Luna and Leo? Theyâve never been away from you this long. Want me to send them to you?â
âNo, Dad. They need to stay away from this pack. Iâll call them every day. They wonât give you any trouble.â
âTheyâre our babies. They never do.â
Talking to my father helped me relax. I could only hope this week would fly by. And pray that Kane wouldnât go out of his way to make my life more difficult than it already was.
