Menu iece by piece, everything started to make sense. Our Gammaâsomeone we trustedâhad been the one to approach Magnus at the pack house and feed him false information. Even though he was a ranked official in our pack, he had betrayed us.
He was the only official who had reached out to me, provoking me to join the battle by constantly bringing up my father during our conversation. He knew I was vulnerable, that I could be easily swayed, and he used it against me.
âWhere is he? Iâll kill him,â I growled, my voice trembling with fury. My eyes burned with an icy blue hue, the rage within me manifesting physically.
âWe havenât seen him since the war,â someone replied, their voice uncertain. âWe assumed he was injured or... worse. The battle was long, and so many pack members diedâwe lost track of him.â
I clenched my fists tightly, anger coursing through me like wildfire. âHow could someone so close to us betray us like this?â
Axel, standing nearby, exhaled deeply, his expression thoughtful. âMagnus fell ill shortly after the celebration party. I canât shake the feeling that our Gamma had something to do with it.â
My eyes widened in shock. Frustration burned in my chest, nearly unbearable. If an Alpha couldnât trust his own officials, then who in the world could he trust?
âHe was with Alpha Hunter,â I said, my voice low but laced with venom. âHow could he pledge his loyalty to another man? My brother was so strong before his illness. He would never have yielded to Kane if he hadnât been sick.â
The bitter sting of betrayal soured my mouth. Those who betrayed their pack, their family, didnât deserve to live. An Alphaâs strength and power ruled the pack, and betrayal was the ultimate crimeâa sin that could never be forgiven.
Turning to our Theta, I spoke with firm resolve, âFind that traitor. Iâll make an example of himâa death so unforgettable that no one will ever dare to betray the Alpha again.â
The Theta nodded slightly, then turned and left the room without a word.
Moments later, a group of guards entered, their eyes scanning the room before settling on me. One of them spoke, his tone formal but firm, âAlpha Kane is summoning you.â
I stiffened, caught off guard. Facing Kane was the last thing I wanted to doânot after what had happened during the war. I had misunderstood him, and now he knew the truth about my children.
My father stepped forward, his expression protective as he walked toward the door. âDonât worry. Iâll go with you.â
But the guards raised their hands, stopping him. âOnly her,â one of them said.
âDad, Iâll be fine,â I assured him, though my stomach churned with unease. After giving my children one last glance, I followed the guards out of the room.
âWhere is he?â I asked as we made our way upstairs.
Magnus had been staying in a guest room downstairs, so I was curious why the guards were taking me in the opposite direction.

Menu âWhere he should be,â one of the guards replied curtly. âIn the head Alphaâs bedroom.â
I stopped abruptly, my heart sinking at his words.
The guards turned to look at me, one of them frowning. âWhatâs the holdup? Letâs go. We donât want the Alpha getting angry with us.â
Another guard shook his head. âYou donât know Alpha Kane. Heâs ruthless when it comes to punishing those who cross him. We canât afford to upset him.â
I glanced at their anxious faces and started walking again, silently marveling at their fear. They didnât know me. They didnât know I used to be their head Alphaâs wife. Thatâs why they were warning me about his nature.
With a heavy heart, I continued toward the head Alphaâs bedroomâa room that had once belonged to my brother. The thought of someone else occupying it filled me with bitterness and grief.
When we reached the large double doors, the guards stopped and knocked. A moment later, as if receiving silent permission through a mind link, they opened the doors and gestured for me to enter.
Taking a deep breath, I stepped into the room. The doors shut firmly behind me, trapping me inside.
The bedroom was spacious, fitting for the head Alpha of the pack house. Every corner of it reminded me of my brother, stirring an ache deep within me.
âFinished taking it all in?â
A deep voice jolted me from my thoughts. My eyes darted around the room until they landed on him- Kane. He was holding a glass of wine, his movements slow and deliberate as he walked toward me. His bare chest was on full display, the wounds I had inflicted on him during the war still visible.
1 quickly averted my gaze as he approached. I couldnât bring myself to meet his eyes. There was something about the power he exuded, the control he had over me, that made me feel small.
âWhat was your family saying to me before? How theyâd do this and that? And now?â His voice was sharp, dripping with mockery. âAll their threatsâcompletely meaningless.â
His tone stung, cutting into me like a knife. I opened my mouth to respond but found no words. I had nothing to say.
He stopped directly in front of me. Even with my head lowered, my eyes involuntarily trailed over his wellâdefined abs before moving up to his chest. The sight of the claw marks Iâd left on his body filled me with guilt.
Suddenly, his hand shot out and grabbed my jaw, forcing me to look at him.
âWhat happened to all your pride, Selene Hawthorne? Why canât you look me in the eye?â he muttered, his voice low and menacing. Anger simmered beneath his words.
When my gaze finally met his, the disgust in his dark eyes was unmistakable. It felt as though his stare pierced straight through me. He let out a scoff, shaking his head.
âLook at where I am now,â he said, his voice cold. âDidnât your brother forbid me from staying here? And yet, here I am. Fate has a funny way of working, doesnât it? This is my pack house now, and Iâll make sure everyone knows itâs mine.â
