ARIEL
I gently place my hand on the unconscious manâs tattooed back, but he doesnât move. Itâs clear that heâs been beaten and tortured, just like I was.
âAriel, stay away!â Xavier growls. âHe could be dangerous!â
I block out his voice and instead focus on my own energy.
I havenât had to use my healing ability for a while, but as long as Iâm not harming anyone, it should work.
Although itâs faint, I hear Seleneâs voice echoing in my mind.
~âHeal him, child. You know what you must do.â~
Except that I really ~donât~ know what Iâm supposed to do.
I havenât heard much from the Moon Goddess since she cryptically told me there were others like me.
And now she sounds more distant than everâ¦
Why is my connection with her waning?
âSelene, can you please be clear for ~once?~â I mutter under my breath.
Xavier doesnât know about my gift, and Iâm not planning on telling him.
No need to complicate things more than they already are.
Suddenly, I feel my energy coursing through my body and transferring to the injured man. The burns on his wrists start to fade, and he stirs awake.
âWh-where am I?â he asks, slowly sitting up.
As soon as he moves, Xavier and his guards close in, drawing their weapons.
I hold up my hand. âStop,â I say firmly. âIâve got this under control.â
I place my hand gently on the man⦠The Experiment.
âWhatâs your name?â I ask calmly.
âIâ¦Iâm not sure,â he replies, the haze starting to disappear from his eyes. âI donât remember anything.â
âA likely story,â Xavier grunts.
âWere you being held by hunters?â I ask.
âYes, I remember that. Hunters. They had me strapped down, but Iâ¦I think I escaped somehow.â The Experiment looks like heâs trying his hardest to reconnect the dots, but itâs not happening.
I know better than anyone the fucked-up things they do to werewolves in those labsâ¦
A shiver runs down my spine as I realize how similar this manâs story is to my own.
âWho are you?â he asks, focusing his attention back to me. His eyes are a haunting pale purple.
âIâmâ¦â I hesitate, not knowing if what Iâm about to say is the right call.
But I have to trust myself.
âIâm someone who can help,â I say confidently.
âNow hold up a fucking minute,â Xavier growls, stepping forward. âWe donât know anything about this guy!â
âWe know that he was being held by the hunters and that he escaped,â I growl back. âAnd trust me when I say that what he needs right now is a safe space to figure things out.â
Xavier clearly isnât happy about it, but he reluctantly nods to his guards. âEscort him to the guest house. And donât let him out of your sight for even a ~second~.â
The Experiment gives me a grateful look as I help him to his feet. âWh-why are you helping me?â
âBecauseâ¦â I say, feeling my heart swell with compassion. âNot long ago...I ~was~ you.â
***
âHe canât stay here!â Xavier shouts angrily, pacing around his office. âHe should be in a prison cell, not the fucking guest house!â
I sigh, trying to rein in my frustration. âYouâre not thinking about the big picture. This may be exactly the break that we need,â I say, trying to speak in a way that will make him understand.
âWhat do you mean?â he asks skeptically.
âThis man ~just~ escaped from the hunters,â I reply. âSo, heâs our best shot at tracking down their current location. Heâs missing most of his memory, but if we can jog itâ¦â
âThen maybe weâll find Xavi,â he says, finishing my thought. âBut how do you know we can trust him?â
âI donât,â I reply honestly. âBut he suffered the same trauma that I did. So I can at least relate to him.â
Xavier sits down at his desk and anxiously taps his fingers on the wood. âIf you think you can help him recover his memories, then fineâ¦â
âI have to try,â I say, nodding. âHe deservesââ
âButâ¦â Xavier holds up his hand, interrupting me. âYou have to do it somewhere else. I donât want him here. My pack has been through enough, and I wonât allow a stranger within its walls.â
âFair enough,â I reply, though Iâm immediately racking my brain for alternate solutions.
I might have a supernatural healing ability, but Iâm no doctor and Iâm certainly not qualified to help anyone with their trauma when Iâm still working through my own.
But I said I would help him, and Iâd meant it.
âYou donât have to worry about it. Iâll take him back to the Royal Pack,â I say. âIf Alex welcomed me into his pack then heâll welcome someone else in the same position.â
Xavier scoffs. âYou really think your ~Alpha~ is going to accept this complete stranger covered in tattoos and scars?â
There was something off about the way Xavier said âAlpha.â
~Is that a hint of jealousy I detect?~
Iâm not sure how he would know about my relationship with Alex, but I suppose news does travel quickly.
âYouâre a beautiful woman, and heâs someone who looks like he just got out of lock-up. Thereâs a big difference,â he says, looking into my eyes.
My heart leaps into my throat.
~Did my ex-destined mate just call me beautiful!?~
Xavier seems to realize his mistake as he quickly clears his throat and goes back to speaking gruffly.
âJust get him out of here as soon as possible.â
âIâll take him back in the morning,â I reply quickly, wanting to get out of his office before things get any more uncomfortable.
âBut I do have one person I need to see before I goâ¦â

âAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!â
Amy screams directly in my ear as she throws her arms around me at the pack border.
âYouâre back home! Like ~home~ home. Iâm so excited,â she squeals.
âJust temporarily,â I reply, giving her a wary smile. âAnd not under the best circumstances.â
Amyâs smile quickly fades. âPoor little Xavi⦠I know youâll find him, Ariel.â
âJust say a lot of prayers to the Goddess,â I say, sighing. âIâll need the strength to get through this.â
âOh, right⦠Working with Xavier canât be easy,â she says, giving me a knowing look. âHas he been a total prick?â
âHe hasnât been too bad,â I reply. âNatalia, on the other handâ¦â
âGirl, the whole pack heard her howling last night,â Amy says, raising her eyebrows. âNat and Xavier have really been going through it. Even before the kidnapping.â
This is news to me.
~I thought everything was perfect between themâ¦~
Iâm about to ask for more details, but Amy suddenly gives me a sly smile.
âAnd what about you and ~Alex?~â she asks in a sing-song voice. âAre there mating ceremony bells on the horizon?â
I laugh, but I also canât help but blush. âThings areâ¦theyâre really good.â
âUm, I need more details than that,â Amy says, crossing her arms.
âHeâs not rushing me or taking things too fast,â I reply. âAnd thatâs exactly what I need. Alex knows that Iâm still working through everything that happened. Iâm lucky to have him in my life.â
âHe knows exactly what you ~need~, huh?â she asks, smirking. âIs he fulfilling all your ~needs?~â
My cheeks burn even more. âI might be staying over at his place a couple nights a weekâ¦or maybe more like ~every~ night.â
Amy gasps in delight. âYou. ~SLUT.~ I love you.â
We both giggle, but Amyâs attention quickly shifts to someone behind me. âWho is ~that?~â she asks, her eyes widening with excitement.
I whip around to see The Experiment approaching the border.
Heâs wearing a tight white tank top that shows off his myriad of tattoos. His buzzed haircut and piercing, purple eyes make him look even edgier.
I donât even know how to answer Amy because truthfully, I donât know who he is.
But I have a feeling that Iâll find out soon enough.
***
âAre you sure about this?â The Experiment asks as we pull up to the gates of the Royal Pack.
âOf course,â I reply, forcing a smile. âIf we can fix your memory, then maybe we can find my nephew.â
âI hope so,â he replies. âYouâve been so kind to me⦠I want to help you however I can.â
I nod in appreciation. âThe people here once showed the same kindness to me when I needed it the most. It changed my life.â
Steve and Louisaâfor taking me into their home and making me feel like a part of their familyâ¦
Dominicâfor being my best friend and drinking buddy and commiserating with meâ¦
Helenaâfor sticking her neck out for me and having my back when things got roughâ¦
And Alexâ¦
Heâs saved me most of all.
I thought he wouldnât be there to catch me when I fell.
But he was.
He picked me up and helped me back on my feet.
And he continues to support me every day.
Now I want to do the same for this man who has no one. Nothing.
Just like me, when Alex found me in the woods.
But is Xavier right?
Will things be different this time?
Alex may have accepted me, butâ¦
Will he accept this stranger?
