The door slammed shut behind them.
Frustration welled up in Mrs. Fraserâs chest.
She wanted to curse and scream out loud. After a quick glance around, she realized that there were many people gathered around the Field familyâs doorstep.
Some of them were even familiar faces.
Ministers, committee members, the secretariesâ families and whatnot⦠had come out to check what had happened.
Her cheeks began burning. She had never been so humiliated before in her life. This is all the Field familyâs fault!
Oh, theyâll be the death of me! I will never forget the humiliation Iâve endured today! Iâll be back!
At the Field family home.
Disbelief flashed across Josephâs face. He realized the look on his face went from one shocked expression to another.
âMom⦠that was so badass! You were like a martial artist expert!â
She just threw them out the door! How cool was that? Iâm so impressed!
Momâs such a badass!
âGo back inside,â Mr. Field sighed. âIâve got something to say.â
Upon hearing this, Charlotteâs body twitched slightly.
Biting her lower lip, she followed the Field family into the house.
Back in the living room, tension hung in the air.
Throughout his entire political career, Mr. Field had held himself to the highest standards. Not only was he honest and incorruptible, but he also had a keen eye for potential and was incredibly adept at putting this ability to good use.
He certainly hadnât encountered such an incident before.
The little girl who was huddling in a corner of the sofa with her head hung low as though she just made some grave mistake. He couldnât bring himself to say anything.
After knowing her for some time, he had a basic understanding of her.
She was polite and hardworking. Even if she didnât talk much, she was still an extremely obedient child.
Thinking about what she had been through back in the Fraser family simply broke his heart.
âLottie, itâs been a while since youâve started living with us. My wife and I know lifeâs been tough on you in the past. Thatâs why weâve never forced you to do anything. However, todayâs events have left me rather surprised. Do you mind giving us an explanation?â
By now, Charlotteâs eyes were so bloodshot that they looked like a rabbitâs. After casting a distressed look at Joseph, she lowered her head once more and mumbled, âI⦠Iâm Lochlanâs foster daughter.
Heâs always been really nice to me. However, Mrs. Fraser didnât like me and wants me to leave him. Iâ¦
I didnât have a home, and I didnât⦠know where else to go. Iâm⦠Iâm sorry for troubling everyone. I-Iâll move out tomorrow. This is all my fault⦠Iâm so sorry.â
She didnât want things to turn out like that either.
However, she knew that the Field family had no obligation to protect her. She was nothing but a stranger to them. She had no mother; she had no home. They had done more than enough for her.
They had no reason to continue allowing her to stay here.
Furthermore, her presence would only invite further trouble for them. The Fraser family was extremely powerful. She didnât the Fields getting angry and worried on her behalf.
Mrs. Fraser was right. Iâll always be a burden.
âLottie, donât say things like that. You did nothing wrong. Mrs. Fraser is wrong. She humiliated and hurt you. Sheâs the one at fault.â Joseph assured her as he grabbed her hand to give her strength. âThis is your home. Didnât you say so earlier?â
âNoâ¦â Charlotte protested as she frantically shook her head. This was what Uncle Lochlan said when he brought me back to the Fraser family as well.
But how did things turn out?
After a while, everybody started hating me.
They think Iâm stupid because I couldnât speak properly. They complained I didnât know how to do anything. I was already trying my best to learn.
I really tried. I want to be just like everyone else as well.
I really do.
Alas, Iâm just too stupid. Iâll always be a disappointment.
As the tears streamed down her cheeks, she sobbed, âIâm not a slut! Iâm really not⦠I didnât seduce Uncle Lochlanâ¦â
Hugging herself, she began mumbling unconsciously, âNo⦠Donât cut me⦠Donât cut meâ¦â
