Chapter 114: Happy Birthday Tomura!

A Lost CreationWords: 17978

You wait until the little clock on your bedside table says eight a.m. before getting out of bed excitedly, rushing downstairs to try to make Tomura and Dabi coffee.

Kurogiri is already in the kitchen, making a start on breakfast by the looks of it.

"Miss Star." He greets. "You're up early."

"It's Tomura's birthday!" You exclaim. "I wanna make them coffee."

Kurogiri hums a little and turns to the coffee machine.

"I'll make it, and you can take it up to them." He says. "It's safer that way."

"Okay!" You agree, hopping onto the countertop and watching him work the coffee machine with his misty hands. "Did you get Tomura a present?"

"No, Miss Star." He replies. "I was a present for him, when he was younger."

"You were?" You ask, watching him as he works around the kitchen.

"Yes. When his teacher was going through his procedures I was gifted to him." Kurogiri says evenly.

"That's a good present..." You muse. "I did a painting."

"I'm sure he'll like it." He replies, checking on the rice while the coffee machine whirrs.

Uncle Jin comes in, his hair messy and his tired eyes even more tired than usual as he walks heavily footed into the kitchen. He gives a lazy smile when he sees you perched on the countertop.

"Mornin' Star." He greets, giving you a quick hug. "Up early!"

"Mhm! Its 'Muras birthday." You tell him, kicking your legs while you wait for Kurogiri to finish the second cup of coffee. "I'm going to bring Dabi and Tomura a coffee!"

"Too cute!" Uncle Jin's second voice exclaims, and he pinches your cheek a little rougher than Dabi would usually allow, but it makes you giggle anyway.

"Here you are, little Miss Star." Kurogiri says, placing the second cup next to you. "Please don't run."

"Thank you!" You chime, jumping down and taking a cup in each hand, not running, but speed walking towards the staircase.

You feel your face heat up the second you see Spinner coming down the stairs shirtless, also looking a little abashed, but you keep your eyes on your feet as you pass, only giving a small 'hello' when he says 'good morning' to you.

You realise your mistake when you stand in front of their bedroom door, unable to knock on the door with your hands full. Instead you very carefully bump the door a couple of times with one of your elbows.

You hear a frustrated groan from inside, which is rude, but you're too excited to care.

"I have coffee!" You call, unable to hide the excitement in your voice.

There's a snort from inside, and then silence for a second until Tomura opens the door, looking at you with amused ruby eyes.

"Happy birthday pa! Coffee!" You say, holding out a cup for him.

He gives you a genuine smile, and takes the cup from you.

"Thank you little Star. Shall I take that too?" He asks, reaching for the other cup too.

You shake your head, passing him easily and darting into the room to give Dabi his coffee. Dabi looks a little startled and quickly moves the sheet higher up his body.

"Star, what-"

"Coffee!" You reply in a sing-song voice, climbing onto the bed too.

Dabi looks exasperated, but Tomura looks nothing more than amused as he shuts the door and comes over to the bed again.

"There's a spider under the covers." Dabi warns you when you try to lift the sheet to get under, and it has the intended effect of making you recoil.

"My side's safe." Tomura tells you, and pats the end of the bed. "Sit here."

You obediently move to where his hand had been, sitting cross legged and looking over the bed sheets nervously as Tomura sits atop the covers too, crossing his sweatpant covered legs and sipping his coffee.

"How old are you now Tomura?" You ask, leaning forward.

"Twenty-one." He replies, sipping the coffee again and leaning against all the drawings Dabi had stuck against their wall.

You give a small 'ooh', looking at him carefully to gauge what kind of mood he's in before deciding to commit to your next move, moving forward to rest your head on his crossed calves, looking at Dabi, who's sipping his coffee a little poutily.

Tomura huffs in amusement and pets your hair with his free hand.

"I made you a present." You tell him.

"Thank you." Tomura replies, his tone carrying his entertainment at your enthusiasm.

"I made you a present too, Dabi." You tell him. "Because I missed your birthday."

Dabi's pissed-off expression softens, and he brushes his metal knuckles over your cheek.

"Don't worry about that, hon. Was just glad to get you back." He says. "We can open our presents later. We got a busy day today."

"Am I coming?" You ask hopefully.

"'Course." He replies, and Tomura moves hair out of your eyes. "You'll probably love it seein' as you're a nerd, too."

Your interest is fully piqued, and you can tell Tomura's is too, because he sets his cup on the side.

"What did you have planned?" He asks.

"Some kinda game café." Dabi shrugs, like it wasn't a big deal. "Nintendo."

You look up at Tomura, to see one of his wrinkled brows raised, a smirk pulling at his cracked mouth.

"I know the one." He replies, amused. "Isn't it notoriously hard to get a booking there?"

Dabi shrugs again and sniffs.

Tomura chuckles and leans to his side slightly, tilting his head for a kiss, which Dabi does naturally.

You scrunch your nose a little bit but don't comment like you usually would, choosing to let them be a little gross on Tomuras birthday.

"That means you've got to behave, brat." Tomura teases.

You frown. "I always behave. It's a rule."

Dabi mutters something under his breath, and whatever it is gets a sharp look from Tomura.

"Of course you do." Tomura says, petting your hair again. "When Hakuchō's up, why don't you tell her how to look after Cloud while we're away?"

"Okay!" You agree easily. "I think she'll like having Cloud all day!"

And so you remain laid in Tomuras lap, his cool fingers running through your hair as you all speak to one another about the plans for the day.

You find yourself getting more and more excited the more Tomura tells you about the Nintendo café, which is only dulled slightly when Tomura mentions he'd booked a hotel for the night, which meant you could either stay at home or with Uncle Giran.

You opt for home, hoping that Hakuchō's day with Cloud might cheer her up enough to spend time with you without being mean in the evening.

"This is his food." You lead Hakuchō, Tomura watching you both from the doorway. "You just need to give him one scoop! Because he's only little."

She nods, not uttering a word, but carrying the purring cat in her arms.

"If you want to give him a treat you have to get them from the top cupboard, because Dabi said he's naughty and tries to get them himself."

"Okay." She agrees.

"You can't give him too many though, otherwise he'll get fat." You tell her.

She nods, but does look a little tired of your instructions.

"He can have one catnip stick." You tell her. "Too much can make him weird."

"I remember." She says dryly.

"He likes cuddles and chin scratches." You continue, petting his head a little shyly as she cradles him. "But too many belly pets makes him angry."

"I learned that last night." She nods.

"You'll have fun together!" You nod confidently and then scratch his head again. "See you later Cloud."

"Bye." Hakuchō says as you walk off to join Tomura again, pausing for a moment and then turning to face you both, her wings drooping a little bit behind her. "...Have fun."

"You too!" You beam, allowing Tomura to place the palm of his hand to the back of your head and lead you away from the kitchen.

You practically skip to the car, Dabi already sitting in the driver's seat, his sunglasses on but no mask on this time, his metal arm hanging out of the window.

"She was nice!" You say happily to Tomura.

"It's the Star perk." He says, flicking your nose with his index finger. "Come on, in you get."

You hum, opening the car door and strapping yourself into the middle seat so you can see out of the window too.

Dabi looked nice today, he wasn't wearing one of his loose vests, but was wearing a black shirt instead, it buttoned low down so that the sun shines off the staples lining his chest, and he's wearing actual jeans instead of sweatpants or the leather pants he wore for work.

Tomura looked nice too, wearing one of his fitted shirts and jeans too, wearing the red sneakers he used to wear a lot at the bar. Half of his fluffy, unruly hair is tied up into a bun but the rest of it flows past his shoulders.

"You look nice." You tell them, leaning forward so you're in line with them both, only to be flicked in the nose by Dabi.

"Stay back there." He says simply. "Otherwise you might fly outta the window 'f I brake too hard."

You don't need a second warning, pressing your back firmly against the seat again.

*•*

"I can't believe I was worried about you not eatin' for months only for you to eat a whole dessert in about five seconds flat." Dabi says as you lean back in the booth, completely full.

"Good job Star." Tomura praises. "Are you still hungry?"

You shake your head and pat your bloated stomach, making the two chuckle, Dabi's hand going to your hair, petting it with the flat of his hand affectionately.

"Prouda you." He says quietly, dropping a kiss to your head.

You whine in embarrassment, sinking lower into your seat. Other people in the café had already been staring at the three of you the entire time, you didn't want them to see that too.

He grins in his usual teasing way, but doesn't embarrass you further, instead whispering for you to sit up straight, which you do obediently.

"C-can I get you guys anything else?" A waitress asks nervously, gripping her notepad like it's a lifeline.

"Naw, just the bill, doll. Thanks." Dabi says without even throwing her a glance, his eyes trained on Tomura and his ruined throat bobbing up and down.

"Your hair's pretty." You tell the waitress, admiring the pretty blue curls.

She immediately seems to loosen up, her smile becoming less forced and more genuine.

"Thank you. I like yours, too." She tells you warmly, and then scurries off to get the bill.

You can feel Dabi playing around with something in his pocket, and see him chewing the inside of one of his staples when you look up at him, his leg bouncing up and down.

You gently place your hand over his, drawing his attention to you, and look up at him curiously,

"Uh, Tomura-" Dabi says, turning his head to look at Tomura again.

Red eyes snap up to his, Tomura immediately pausing whatever it was he was reading on his phone. Dabi opens and closes his mouth, fiddling with his pocket again, and then sighs, and ruffles your hair instead.

"Shall we go and see the ducks?" He asks, looking at Tomura, and not you.

Tomura smirks at him as the waitress puts the bill down next to you.

"Sure."

*•*

You're having fun, finally seeing the ducks after so long, throwing handfuls of seed out to the loud ducks, completely oblivious to the anxious mess that is Dabi as he smokes a little ways from you and Tomura.

Tomura takes the odd handful here and there, scattering it for the birds and listening to your enthusiastic naming of all the ducks.

"Is Dabi okay?" You ask after a while, having noticed he seems to have lit up another cigarette.

Tomura hums a little thoughtfully. "He's been strange all day. It might be his scars, or residual pain from his arm."

Your shoulders sink a little. You didn't want Dabi to be hurt on Tomuras birthday, even if he was trying really hard to hide it.

"I hope he's not hurt." You murmur, reaching to try to pet one of the ducks.

"He'll be fine, Starfire." Tomura reassures you, petting your hair.

Once Dabi's finished his second cigarette, he flicks it into the water and takes long strides towards you both, making Tomura freeze for a second, his eyes narrowing as he turns to look at Dabi, unbeknownst to you.

When he's close enough, he takes a deep breath and says:

"Tomura."

Which makes you turn around, because he says it so seriously. Like Tomura's in trouble, which makes alarms go off in your head.

But when you do, you turn around to see Dabi on one knee, the few patches of clear skin left on his face burning a shade of pink.

He digs into his pocket and gets out the little black box he'd shown you a day or so before, and your eyes widen. Tomura's eyes immediately snap towards you, and you look at him a little startled in return.

Before Dabi can say whatever he had opened his mouth to say, Tomura holds a hand up, silencing him immediately, and making him gulp audibly, a worried expression on his scarred face.

And then Tomura pulls out the same black box from his back pocket with a smirk, making Dabi blink in surprise, but his mismatched lips turn upwards again and there's a playful gleam in his eyes when he looks up at Tomura again.

"So it's a 'yes' then?" He asks, and Tomura rolls his eyes.

"Idiot." Tomura replies, crouching down and allowing Dabi to pull him into a kiss.

You stand there awkwardly for a moment before Dabi runs his nose along Tomura's quickly and his blue eyes slide towards you.

He nods his head to silently encourage you over, and Tomura holds out an arm for you.

You don't need to be given any more hints, immediately throwing your arms around the two of them, earning a chuckle from Dabi and Tomura alike.

You all hug for a moment or two before Tomura presses scratchy lips to your temple and slowly lets go so he can show Dabi the ring he got as you bounce excitedly.

Dabi looks pleased before he even hears that it doesn't melt or sees the inside of the ring. And when he does see the inside of the ring he looks a little puzzled.

"I get why the star's there, but what's with the sun and moon?" He asks, frowning slightly as Tomura slides it onto his finger.

"It's us!" You're unable to stop yourself from blurting out.

Tomura smiles, looking at you and nodding, standing up again with Dabi following his lead.

"Star said one night that my hair was like the moon, and when I quizzed her on what that made you, she said the sun." Tomura explains, and Dabi looks a little softer.

"Cute. Dork." He says, pinching your cheek.

"Jerk!" You retort, trying to get your cheek out of his grip.

"Do I get mine or not?" Tomura asks, sounding vaguely entertained.

"'Course you do." Dabi scoffs, grabbing his hand, even though Tomura flinches out of habit, and slides the black ring with the blue stripe onto his finger.

He pulls Tomura into another quick kiss, and you tug on his shirt gently.

"What, Star?" He asks.

"Does this mean we're a family now?" You ask.

"We've always been a family, hon." Dabi sighs. "Always will be."

*•*

When you get back, you rush off to get Tomura and Dabi's presents while Himiko coos at their rings and Jin, Spinner and Kurogiri congratulate them. You bring down two canvases, and pass them their own present each.

For Dabi, you and Uncle Giran had started a painting of his flames in a starry night sky, and you had finished it all by yourself. For Tomura, you'd tried to paint all the characters on Legend Of Zelda he seemed fond of, and had written:

'Thank you for being my Pa.

Love, Star'

On the back of the canvas.

They both are as pleased as they usually are with their gifts, Tomura giving you a fist bump and a small smile, and Dabi crouching to cover your face in kisses no matter how much you complain in embarrassment.

"Kurogiri, can you put these up on our wall?" Tomura asks, gesturing at the canvas that Jin is currently looking over intently.

"Of course, young master." Kurogiri replies, taking the canvas in Dabi's hands and then gently pries the one from Jin's hands too, even when the man clings dramatically to it.

"Thank you." Tomura says, going upstairs with him to pack for their hotel trip.

Dabi crouches, cupping your face in his hands and pressing a kiss to your forehead.

"Be good while we're away, 'kay?" He says, and you nod eagerly. "If you need us send us a message or call, yeah?"

"Mhm!" You agree, and Himiko wraps an arm around your shoulders.

"We're going to have a girls night!" She announces happily.

You hadn't known that, but you're happy to be involved.

"Can Hakuchō come too? She's a girl." You ask, looking at Himiko. "Also can Cloud stay?"

She scrunches her nose up but shrugs. "Okay."

Dabi ruffles your hair and stands, giving Himiko a look that you can't quite translate, and her arm tightens around your shoulders, and her full lips press against your cheek quickly.

"I'll go get my room ready!" She announces, skipping out of the room herself, beaming up at Tomura as she passes and he places a hand on the top of her head briefly.

"That was quick." Dabi comments, raising a thin white eyebrow.

"I was prepared." Tomura shrugs, dropping the bag to the floor gently and crouching to your height too, looking at you fondly. "Are you okay, little Star?"

You nod, leaning your face against his knuckles the second they meet your face.

"We're going to have a girls night." You tell him, and he nods.

"Okay. You know what to do if you need us?" He asks, keeping his hand still for you.

"Message or call." You repeat.

"And if you have a problem with Hakuchō?" He asks in English, which makes Dabi's head snap to him.

"Tell you and not dad." You reply instantly, in English.

"Good girl." He praises in English, leaning forward to press his cracked lips to your head.

"Don't do that sh- Don't do that." Dabi hisses the second Tomura's stood again.

"What, practice English with her?" Tomura asks innocently, but Dabi's expression doesn't change. Tomura looks back down at you. "Be good."

"Okay! Have fun!" You say.

You give him another hug, appreciating this affectionate Tomura you had been getting today, and then give Dabi another hug too.

"C'mon Star!" Himiko urges from the door, bouncing on her feet, with Hakuchō looking kind of nervous behind her. "We're going to paint each others nails!"

You hum, immediately moving to join them, taking Himiko's hand in yours as she reaches for you. You don't grab Hakuchōs hand but smile at her as Himiko leads you away.

Maybe you could make sure she had a nice evening too.
