Chapter 71 â My Heart Only Wants Him
***
We moved to a different terrace this time.
âThank you for your help,â were the first words I spoke. Giving thanks was only proper, after all.
Claude shook his head. âIt was nothing special.â He offered a tender smile. âIt is my duty to help my partner. I felt bad too.â
ââ¦â
âAfter that warning, Lady Dorothea shouldnât bother you anymore.â
âYes,â I replied in a soulless voice. âI guess so. Weâve been in an unnecessary relationship for so long.â I shook my head. âIn the beginning, I was just trying to fulfill my filial duty, but this has pushed me to the edge. As soon as the party is over, Iâm going to send a letter to Countess Cornohen to nullify the deal.â
âIâll support your choice either way.â Claude smiled faintly at me as he looked into my eyes. I was flustered by the sudden eye contact, and I smiled clumsily and changed the subject.
âIâm more worried about Odeletta. I think Dorothea spoke a lot of insulting words towards herâ¦â I murmured in concern.
âLady Odeletta is a strong woman. You donât have to worry too much.â
âIs that soâ¦â
âYes. And donât pay too much attention to Lady Dorotheaâs nonsense,â he said reassuringly.
âI wonât,â I replied. Because it was just Dorotheaâs words, not anyone elseâs. âAgain, thank you very much for today. I owe you.â
âLetâs say itâs a favor for being my partner today.â
Claude had quite the gift for consoling another person, and his words brought a smile to my face.
âShould we head back to the banquet hall? If weâre away for too long, people might talk again,â I said.
Claude smiled at my joke.

âOdeletta.â
Odeletta, who was now alone, turned around at the call of her name. Maristella came into view.
âMaristella,â Odeletta said in a flat tone. Her voice reflected her current moodâin short, not good. If someone asked her if the reason was because of Dorotheaâs misbehavior earlier, then they would be half-right.
Dorotheaâs words were meant to be cutting, and Odeletta couldnât help but feel worse about herself. She had the same unrequited love as the person she hated most in the world. And that unrequited love liked the person she liked most in the world. Even if her unrequited love wouldnât entertain a relationship with her, she was still trying to defend her friend. For Odeletta, it was a painful and confusing situation one way or another.
âThere you are,â Maristella said.
And the friend at the center of it all was talking to her casually, oblivious to the turmoil inside of her.
However, ignorance was not a sin. Odeletta grew up learning that. Therefore, she could not hate Maristella. But what if Maristella had something she wanted?
âWhereâs the Duke?â Odeletta asked, trying to conceal her raw feelings as much as possible.
âHe agreed to stay away for the moment. Maybe because of what happened earlier,â Maristella explained.
âAh.â
Well, how considerate of him, Odeletta muttered cynically beneath her breath.
âThank you for earlier, Odeletta.â
ââ¦Earlier?â Odeletta replied confusedly. âWhat do you mean, âearlierâ?â
âFor standing up to Dorothea when I wasnât there.â
ââ¦That thing?â
Maristella looked at her worriedly. âYouâre not upset by her, are you? I know her personality, but I donât know ifââ
âMarie,â Odeletta interrupted with a soft voice, and Maristella clamped her mouth shut as if her words had been cut off with a knife. Odeletta looked at Maristella, who had a naive expression on her face as if she had no idea what was going on.
âKeep calm,â Odeletta repeated to herself.
âIâI think Iâll go now,â she said softly.
âAlready? But itâs not that late yetââ Maristella protested.
âActually, Iâve had a cold since yesterday.â
She wanted to get out of this place as soon as possible. Otherwise, her feelings towards her friend would turn uglier than before. She had to stay far away from those innocent eyes in order to protect their relationship.
âIâll see you again, Marie. Have a good time. Have a safe journey back.â
âAh, yes⦠You too, Odel.â
ââ¦â
Odeletta gave a silent smile instead of a reply, and slowly turned around. She felt Maristellaâs gaze on her, but she walked forward without looking back.
âOdeletta.â
Sometime later, her name was called again. Her footsteps stopped.
âOdeletta,â the familiar voice said again.
ââ¦Itâs not that I didnât hear.â Odeletta turned around and bit her lips hard. A familiar young man was looking at her. There was pity in his gaze, and Odeletta felt even worse than before.
Shame, misery, sadness. It was embarrassing to reveal this in front of her childhood friend.
âDilton,â she said.
âAre you alright?â
âDo I look alright?â
ââ¦No.â
âYou know, Dilton. You know the answer.â Odelettaâs voice was cracked with hurt. âYou know me too well.â
ââ¦â
âYou know what Iâm feeling right now.â
ââ¦Yes,â Dilton answered.
âWhy did you call me?â Odeletta asked sadly. âDid you have to tell me that you saw me like this? Couldnât you pretend that you didnât know?â
âOdeletta.â
ââ¦Why,â Odeletta repeated. âWhy did you do that, Dilton Oras?â
ââ¦â
âYou should have walked past as usual.â
âI just.â Diltonâs mouth closed tightly then opened again. âI just wanted to ask if you were alright.â
ââ¦â
âThatâs why I called you.â
âIâm not alright,â she answered, struggling to pull the corners of her mouth up in a mirthless smile. âI canât be alright.â
ââ¦â
âDo I look alright?â
âIn other peopleâs eyes.â Dilton gave her the answer she wanted to hear, then replied with his own honest answer. âBut not in my eyes.â
ââ¦â
âYou should stop, Odeletta. The world is filled with other men who are good for you.â
âYou think I donât know such a hypothetical idea?â she lamented. âHalf of the world are men, and I am a woman worthy of being loved by others.â
ââ¦â
âI know that much, Dilton.â She continued with a bitter smile. âBut what do I do right now? If itâs not the Crown Princeâ¦itâs no use.â
ââ¦â
âItâs no use at all, Dilton. It has to be him only. My heartâmy heart only wants him.â
âTime will solve it.â
âIâm not patient enough to wait until then.â
âOdel.â
âI appreciate you worrying about me,â she said in a calmer voice than before. âI always appreciate it, Dilton. Youâre a dear friend and colleague whoâs always helped me when I had hard times.â
ââ¦â
âButâ¦I donât think you can help me with this. Just give up. That is the only way you can help me.â
âI cannot help your heart.â
ââ¦I know. Even if youâre close to the Crown Prince, itâs presumptuous of me to ask for it.â Odeletta nodded as if she understood. âSo just keep watching me, Dilton.â
ââ¦â
âPlease.â
âI want you to be happy.â Dilton spoke with a hoarse voice. âI donât want to see my dear friend suffer.â
ââ¦Thank you.â Odeletta gave her first genuine smile during this conversation. âI know how you feel about me, Dilton. But right nowâ¦just watch.â
âWill you be alright?â
âNo matter what the ending of the story is, I will make my own choice. Itâs my life.â
ââ¦â
âSo I wonât have any regrets left at the end of the story.â
ââ¦Alright.â Dilton gave a resigned sigh. As usual, Odeletta was stubborn and did what she wanted to do. âIâll cheer you on, Odeletta.â
âThank you, Dilton.â Odelettaâs smile looked more relaxed than from the beginning.
Dilton decided to be satisfied with just that. At least for today, the only goal had been to see the soft smile on her lips.
