Chapter 42
Isilis held her breath at his words.
She couldnât afford it. The Princess was born, but she didnât have magical powers so there was no guarantee that the child would be safe if the same situation happened to target the princess again.
Although the Princess was well cared for by the nanny, that and her protection were separate. No matter how powerful Isilisâ magic was, there were many ways to get the Princess out of here⦠There was a limit to how her magic could protect her.
âI canât believe you found out like this.â
âIt doesnât matter that the Princess isnât endowed with magical powers, Your Majesty. The manifestation of her magical powerâ¦â
âI know best. Itâs possible it will be later.â
âBuy your time until then.â
âI want to do that, too.â
âDo you need a cause?â
âThatâs right.â
âThen, find the previous Empress.â
âThe previous Empress?â
âLeaving the Empire to her for a while might be one way.â
âDuke.â
âYour Majesty⦠Youâre still young. The previous Empress passed the throne too hastily and left. Donât you know?â
âI know. Butâ¦â
âMake an excuse about the previous Empressâs consort.â
âWhat?â
âSay that you will investigate the death of Your Majestyâs father. If you do that, the previous Empress will return to the Imperial Palace.â
âIf I do that, I will incur the wrath of the nobles.â
âDonât worry, Your Majesty. I will help you.â
âDuke Verus. Why are you doing this to me?â
âYou know what, Your Majestyâ¦â
ââ¦.â
âWhen Your Majestyâs true name is enshrined in the depths of the temple, youâd know that there are two people who have sworn an oath of allegiance there.â
âRight.â
âOne of them is me.â
âYou are myâ¦â
âI will give my best effort, Your Majesty. I am your subject and godfather.â
Seeing the gentle smile on Duke Verusâs face, Isilis swallowed the rising cry.
Even though she thought she was alone, she wasnât. One of her two hidden loyalists made an appearance. Where her true name was enshrined, there was always someone who protected the Imperial Family.
One of them was Duke Verus, the guardian she had been searching for all along.
âWhy are you saying that now?â
âIf I told you in advance, Your Majesty wouldnât have grown this much.â
âGrown?â
âI think it is amazing that Your Majesty, who is young in age, has led the country to this extent. Still, Your Majesty, donât push yourself too hard.â
âDid it look like that to you?â
âAfter the incident happened to the Princess, you became too agitated. So, ask the previous Empress for help.â
âI am also looking for the previous Empressâs whereabouts though what should I do about what is not easy?â
âIf you make up your mind, I will take care of it.â
âIs there a way?â
âIf you ask, I will look for the previous Empress.â
Isilis nodded her head. It would help her if he found the previous Empress and shared the burden she was carrying.
ââ¦At least I wonât have to discuss national marriage with someone I donât want.â
If the previous Empress returned, other variables could have arisen.
âPlease donât tell me to take Usman as my consort.â
Isilis was worried on the one hand, but she decided to take it slow. While it wasnât the best way for her to avoid the noblesâ attack, she needed the second best⦠to buy time. It was the only way to give the Princess the time she needed, other than the imperial wedding.
âDuke Verus.â
âPlease give me your order.â
âI know that you have been in touch with the previous Empress.â
âDid you know?â
âI canât help but notice that the Dukeâs residence is using a communication device like that. I let you go because you were loyal to me. Still, the previous Empress is the previous Empress. Her time has now ended.â
âI know, Your Majesty.â
âThis is only a moment to buy time. I have no intention of sharing my power with the previous Empress.â
âThe previous Empress will only buy you a little time.â
âWhen the time is right, she will have to step back.â
âI will convey your concerns.â
âThen, you can go.â
Duke Verus bowed his head deeply and stepped down after Isilis ordered him to go and tell the previous Empressâs ancestor what she wanted. She murmured in a low determined voice as she watched him.
âEverything according to my will.â
ââ¦Not according to motherâs wishes.â
âUrgent news!â
A messenger with a letter arrived at the imperial castle of the Hillenton Empire. Upon receiving the letter, the Emperor of Hillenton jumped up from his seat.
âWhat is it?â
The nobles flinched at the sight of the Emperor trembling with anger.
Everyone was curious about what was going on, although they didnât make the mistake of opening their mouths first. It was clear that the first person to open his mouth because he couldnât overcome his curiosity would receive all that anger.
âWhat is the matter, Your Majesty?â
The Crown Prince, unable to see the trembling Emperor, opened his mouth from the side. The Emperor looked at him with terrifying eyes and opened his mouth.
âThey say Berthas Hillenton is a sword master.â
âWhat⦠what?â
âBerthas Hillenton doesnât say that he has reached the level of a sword master?!â
The Crown Prince put on a bewildered expression at the Emperorâs outburst.
âNot too long ago, he was only a sword expertâ¦â
âItâs clear he cheated on us.â
Hearing his words, the Crown Prince shook his head.
âIt canât be. Itâs something that canât be hiddenâ¦â
âIf you reach a certain level, it will be possible.â
âWhy does he stand still with such force?â
The Emperor sat down at the question.
âHow do I know that?! Summon him now!â
âYour Majesty. Then, what about trade negotiationsâ¦â
The Emperor threw down the letter he was holding to the Crown Prince, and his sonâs face, who had been hit by it, hardened with shame. He did not like being treated like this in front of his subjects.
âDoes that seem important now?â
Glancing around at his subjects, the Emperor suddenly shouted.
âEveryone get out!â
With his anger, the subjects rushed out of the audience room, and the Emperor summoned the Crown Prince. The Crown Prince, who approached the throne, was slapped on the cheek by the Emperor. As a âslapâ sound was heard, the attendants swiftly lowered their heads.
âDo you have any thoughts? Berthas Hillenton became a Sword Master⦠You donât know what he was going to do with that excuse.â
âIf he was going to do something, wouldnât he have already done it?â
Swallowing the rising anger, the Crown Prince opened his mouth. As he rubbed his blushed cheek, he gritted his teeth and spoke again.
âWhat does it matter that he is a sword master? After all, he is someone who cannot ascend to the throne.â
âThat is not the point. He only cannot ascend the throne, but he canât scheme something else?â
âI know, though he will not do that.â
âWhy.â
âHow many years has Berthas Hillenton bowed to us? Itâs been almost twenty years. But now, do you think anything will change if he becomes a sword master? We already have all the real power.â
âThere are many followers of Berthas Hillenton.â
âStill, that is when he moves. Iâve been told that there are a lot of people he was in contact with, so Iâm keeping an eye on it, yet I havenât had any problems.â
âIf he is blinded by power, it will change.â
âIf he had been blinded by power, he would have already entered the imperial castle, father.â
The Crown Prince changed his title, so the Emperor turned his attention to him.
âI threw a bait to test him.â
âBaitâ¦?â
âClues to the death of his father, late uncle.â
âAre you crazy?â
âNo. It was because I had to check.â
Hillentonâs Crown Prince, Kespine, uttered while smiling, âEven so, there was no response. It is clear that he gave up.â
âIt canât be. Where would that bloodline go? Just as the previous Emperor was terrible, he must be like that, too.â
âFather. Donât worry too much, I will take care of it myself.â
âNo. Summon him right away.â
âFather.â
âDidnât I tell you to call me Your Majesty in public?â
âThe subjects arenât even hereâ¦â
âItâs an audience room, so of course, call me Your Majesty.â
âYour Majesty.â
The Emperor whispered at Kespineâs words as he corrected his title as if he couldnât help it.
âI need to call in Berthas and question his intentions. Prepare for it.â
âUnderstood.â
âWhen Berthas returns, you will go to the trade negotiations with Larchen.â
âMe?â
âThe Empress is getting married, so it would be nice to be you.â
âYour Majesty, I must rule this countryâ¦â
âI know. Who told you to marry the Empress? Just make the Empress fall in love with your handsome looks and steal the secrets of Larchen.â
ââ¦Understood.â
As the Crown Prince left the audience room, the Emperor, who had been watching him, opened his mouth again.
âBerthas Hillenton. I saved him, yet he became trouble⦠I must kill him.â
âYour Excellency, a messenger has come from Hillenton.â
He didnât even look at Hectorâs sudden words. He waved his hand at Hector as he was looking through the documents for tomorrowâs trade deal.
âYou read it.â
âAll right.â
Hectorâs expression changed every moment as he read the correspondence. Berthas, unable to see his face as he was reading another document, asked with his eyes still on the document.
âWhat?â
âYour Excellencyâ¦â
Only then did his head turn at Hectorâs serious voice. Smiling at his stiff expression, Berthas opened his mouth.
âWhat is it?â
ââ¦They told you to return directly to Hillenton.â
âWhy all of a sudden?â
âTheyâre saying youâre going to plead guilty.â
âFor what crime?â
âThe crime of hiding the fact that you became a sword master who would become the property of the Empire.â
â
