Chapter 61
HAZEL
PRESENT TIME
When Ravel inquired about Daisyâs well-being, a rush of emotions flooded me, accompanied by a barrage of questions. Had the moment I dreaded finally arrived? Although I had reh ear sed numerous scenarios for discussing Daisy with Ravel, my mind seemed to have gone blank at this crucial juncture.
Breathlessly, I managed to ask, âHow did you come to know about her?â
His response was almost nonchalant, as if knowing about her was entirely commonplace for him.
âWhat do you mean?â he queried. âDaisy?â
âYes, Daisy,â I reiterated, my heart racing. The urgency to understand how he had come to know about her overshadowed me. âHow did you find out about Daisy?â
Time was of the essence, and I needed his reply to quell my spiraling thoughts. âWho informed you about her?â I pressed, certain that neither David nor Agatha would reveal her existence to him without my consent.
âElenor was present when you mentioned Monica or Daisy collapsing, and then you hurriedly left your office without giving her any context,â Ravel recounted, seemingly unaware of the situation. Feeling a weight lift off my chest, I lowered myself onto a nearby seat in the hospital corridor.
âMonica is Davidâs mother, and she experienced a collapse earlier today,â I clarified, hoping to satisfy his curiosity and divert his attention from Daisy. My intention was for the topic to fade away naturally.
Concern filled Ravelâs voice as he inquired, âIs she alright? Itâs not a grave situation, is it?â
With the things the neighbors who saw her explained, I guess it is pretty serious. âwhen she collapsed, she hit her head hit on the floor which made her cr ack her skull. Theyâve been in the operating room and I am yet to hear from the doctor.â Nor David. I told Agatha to give him a call, and if he doesnât answer, she should go over to his place and inform him of what happened since we werenât able to reach him on the phone.
âDo you need me to come over?â he offered.
I glanced over at a sleeping Daisy beside me. âThat wonât be necessary. David is already having a bad day, it is not advisable to have you around him right now. It will only end up elevating his frustration.
âOkay.â With the way he responded, it was obvious he didnât give a sh it about Davidâs emotions. He is only agreeing because I said so. âJust give me a call if you need me and Iâll come running,â
Daisy stirred in her sleep and I smiled sadly. âThank you, Ravel, I keep that in mind.â I heard advancing footsteps before David arrived. âIâll talk to you later Ravel.â disconnecting the call, I pocketed my phone and rose to my full height. âFor someone whose mother was seriously injured, you sure took your time to get here.â
âI had a flat tire on my way here.â He grumbled, walking past me to sit down on the empty seat. âWhat are the doctors saying?â
âI donât know. She has been in there with them since I arrived, but the neighbors said she cracked her skull when she hit the hard floor.â I sat down next to him. âDidnât you see my calls and
my texts?â
Sighing, he relaxed back and tilted his head upwards, folding his hands. âThis isnât the right time to talk about our relationship problem Hazel.â
I glared at him. âI wasnât talking about that. I meant my texts about what happened to your mother.â I deadpanned. âWhy didnât
you call me back to find out whatâs going on with her?â
âI am here, arenât I?â he retorted angrily. âI am upset with you Hazel, so I will appreciate it if you let me deal with this alone.â He went as far as shutting his eyes, an indication that the conversation is over.

Frowning, I leaned forward. âWhat do you mean by that?â
He opened his eyes again and pinned me with a glare. âWhat I am saying is that I want you to leave!â
my frown deepened. âI donât want you here Hazel, how difficult is that for you to understand?â
He is hurting; I can see it in his eyes. His motherâs condition is getting to him, which is why I am not going to take his words to heart. âI am not leaving David, no matter how many times you tell me to leave, I am never leaving your side until your mother gets better.â
He scoffed. âSuit yourself, but donât expect me to give you any audience or acknowledge you in any way.â
Biting my lips, I turned to Robert. âI know you donât know much about babies, but can you please take Daisy back to Monicaâs and keep an eye on her for me.â I donât know why it is taking Daisyâs nanny a long time to get back from her leave. Maybe I should consider finding another one.
âsure thing maâam.â He walked over to the series of connected seats and picked up Daisy into his arms before turning to walk away. âRobert?â he paused and turned around. âWhy did I receive the call of what happened from the neighbors and not from you?â
âMrs. Monica told me to quickly grab some milk for Daisy at the store.â He explained. âI wasnât exactly at home when it happened.â
Monica sending him on an errand is justifiable, but I canât help but wonder what if something had happened after Monica collapsed. What if someone came and took my daughter away? âItâs fine, go ahead.â He bowed slightly before walking away.
David stayed true to his words. He didnât even glance in my direction until three hours later when the doctors walked out of the operating room. He jumped up from his eat when he saw them approaching.
âHow is my mother?â
The female doctor smiled warmly at him. âShe is out of danger,â she assured him. âshe is getting transferred to her ward, so you both should be able to see her soon.â
For the first time in seven hours, I exhaled with relief. âThank you, Doctor, we really appreciate your effort.â She gave us a nod before walking away with a series of nurses trailing behind her.
As we were waiting for either of the nurses to tell us which room Monica was transferred to, my stomach grumbled. David turned and stared at me. âHave you had lunch yet?â he grumbled.
M U V Y Z
âNot yet,â I mumbled, not wanting to say more so I wouldnât anger him. âI was too worried about Monica that I forgot to grab something.â
âGo stay with Monica while I go get you something to eat.â
Thatâs not right. âItâs fine. You can go be with her while I go find something to eat myself.â He needs to be with his mother and I refuse to take that away from him.
Smacking his lips, he searched his pocket for his wallet. âDonât be stubborn Hazel. Go in there and wait for me. You are not familiar with this place and I do not want to come in search of you.â
I tried not to scoff. âAre you saying Iâll get lost?â
âYou have every tendency, donât you think so?â his teasing tone made me smile. At least we are moving past the constant angry face. Iâll be right back. Just text me the ward number when they finally give her a room.â
âSure.â I watched him walk away. It didnât take long, a nurse appeared and directed me to Monicaâs room. When I walked in, I was surprised to find her awake. âWas she awake all through?â
âShe is slightly awake. She is under anesthetic, so she is only half awake right now.â The nurse explained. âThere is every probability that she will be talking a lot. You can either engage her or ignore her.â
âOkay, thank you.â She nodded, turned away, and walk away. I sat down on the sofa and stared at Monica.
She looked around with a confused expression and when her gaze landed on me, her frown deepened.
âI want to see my

son.â She muttered.
âDavid?â I smiled at her. âHe is coming. David just stepped out to get something.â
She shook her head. âNot David.â She mumbled. âDavid is not my son.â
