Chapter 30
HAZEL
(FIVE YEARS AGO)
Stacking up fried chicken into a carton can be a very delightful thing to do. I prefer doing this to serving customers or taking the packed chicken for delivery. Stacking up the last piece, I stood up and stretched my back to relieve some ache from having to squat for so long.
âHazel?â Oscar called from the doorway, I turned to him.âA lady is asking for you out front.â
Crinkling my nose, I walked over to the sink to take off the gloves and wash my hands. âDid you get a name?â Iâm in no mood to see a stranger.
âElenor.â He responded. âShe said her name is Elenor.â
Ravelâs sister? How did she find me? âIâll be there shortly.â Wiping my hands with a towel, I got rid of the apron before walking out to meet her. Honestly, this isnât how I hoped to see any of Ravelâs family.
Iâm no fool, Iâm sure his mother will want someone better for him.
I found her seated at the corner of the restaurant. Suddenly nervous, I dragged myself over to her table and sat down. âHi.â
Elenor looked up from her phone and the moment she saw me, her face brightened with a warm smile.
âHazel!â How does she know my name? Thatâs interesting. âIâm sorry for intruding on your work.â She pointed at a car parked outside through the window. âIâve been sitting in there for ages, waiting for you to get off work.â
âOhâ¦â Still confused, I relaxed back. âHow did you find me?â
Dropping her phone, she leaned forward. âRaymond told me.â She bit her lower lips. âIâm sorry if youâre uncomfortable with that, I just wanted to meet you and thank you for what you did last night.â
âItâs fine, you donât have to.â Imagine my surprise when Oscar served me a soft drink and chicken wings. I arched a brow at him and he shrugged.
âI ordered that,â Elenor announced. âI didnât think it was right to leave your side of the table empty while I eat.â
Glancing at the order on the table, I slowly lifted my gaze to Elenor. âIâm sorry, but I really have to get back to work Iâm still on duty, so I shouldnât be relaxing around eating.â
âYour boss said it was okay.â She pointed out. âHe said you can go off work if you want.â
I blinked rapidly. âYou met with Harrison?â She nodded. I was instantly reminded of Ravel. He did the same thing the first time he met with me. âWhat did you offer him?â
Flipping a shoulder, she picked a chicken and dipped it into a sauce. âI offered to buy all the chicken you were packing in there.â Iâm not surprised. I find it rather annoying that people think they can buy my time. âIâm sorry.â She apologized abruptly, seemingly noticing my displease over her action. âI didnât mean to upset you.â
âItâs fine.â Sheâs Ravelâs family, and what his family will think about me matters a lot to me. Not sure what to say, I picked up the chicken/wings and dipped them into a sauce.
âWhy exactly did you help me?â Elenor asked, watching me closely. âDid you do that because you know Iâm Ravelâs sister?â
Chuckling, I took my time swallowing. âIf youâre asking whether I did what I did to gain some bro wnie points from you, the answer is no. I didnât even know you were his sister until Raymond and Ravel walked in.â
She tilted her head, her brows furrowing, âThen why did you help me? I watched the footage and that man would have easily beaten you up, or probably raped you too, yet you chose to stick around. Why?â
Thatâs quite simple. âBecause I still have a functioning conscience.â Every normal human would have done what I did.
Maybe they wouldnât have charged in there themselves, but theyâll definitely call for help. âBesides Iâve seen a lot of douc hebags in my life.â
Staring at me unblinkingly, Elenor suddenly smiled. âI like you.â She waggled her brows at me teasing.
âI have a feeling weâre going to be great friends and I also owe you one.â
Oh⦠I doubt sheâll say that if she finds out the same secret Iâm keeping from her brother. âDonât judge my character just because I helped you.â She needs to be smarter than that. âWhat if Iâm the one who sent that dude to try molesting you, just so I could save you and earn your trust.â
Laughing shortly, she shook her head in disagreement. âWhy would you want to gain my trust when already have my brotherâs trust?â
Is she for real? âYouâre his family,â I stated matter-of-factly, âgaining your trust and that of your mother should be important to any woman who claims to love Ravel.â
Her grin widened. âA lady who understands the concept of family.â She winked at me. âI like you.â Well, Iâm glad she does. âDonât bother winning my motherâs trust,â she added, âsheâs a lost course.â
I winced involuntarily. Iâd give anything to have my parents back. âDonât you think itâs rather a harsh thing to say about your mother?â
Scoffing, she wiped her hands, her lips curling. âSheâs my mother, and I know her very well. Donât ruin your relationship with Ravel just because of my mum, sheâs not worth it. I love her, but she can be a royal witch sometimes.â
Now Iâm getting more nervous about meeting her someday. âWith what you just said, I canât say Iâm looking forward to seeing her.â
She giggled. âYou shouldnât.â Her phone vibrated on the table but she simply ignored it. âWhat are you doing on Saturday night?â
Hunting for jobs online. âNothing.â I tried not to glare at Harrison who just walked past our table. âWhy do you ask?â
âIâm hosting a party on Saturday, and Iâll love to see you.â The glint in her eyes reflected just how excited she is about the party. âIt will be fun, I promise, plus I canât wait to lavish Ravelâs debit card.â
âNo offense to you Elenor,â she nodded, an indication that I should go on, âjudging from the fact that you almost got raped last night, should you really be thinking about partying?â
She laughed at my comment as though I said something hilarious. âThat I almost got raped isnât an excuse not to party, besides Iâm not always that drunk.â I scoffed under my breath, but somehow, she managed to hear it. âReally, I donât drink in a stupor. I had a huge fight with my _â She paused and tilted her head.
Confusing her sudden silence as hesitation, I intervened. âYou donât have to talk about your relationship problem with me if you donât to.â
âRelationship problem?â She scoffed, âheâs not my boyfriend just someone Iâm seeing. I was actually looking for the best term to classify him hence the reason for my silence.â Smacking her lips together, she resumed her explanation. âSo yeah, I got drunk because of him and I can assure you it will never happen again.â
She got drunk for someone who isnât her boyfriend but someone she was seeing; and here I was, thinking my love life is complicated. âYou donât have to explain things to me. If you feel you can handle another party, then thatâs cool too.â
âGreat!â She clapped her hands. âSo youâll be coming right?â
She went out of her way to invite me, why shouldnât I? âThere wonât be any drugs at the party right?â
She arched her brows. âI didnât take you as one to judge.â
I shrugged nonchalantly. âI donât like being around drugs Elenor.â Iâm afraid of relapse even though I donât say it out aloud to anyone. âSo if there are drugs at the party, Iâll have to decline.â

She stared at me for a beat moment before responding. âYou donât have to worry about that. I donât do drugs, and nobody is bringing that sh it into my house.â
âA house party?â
âMhmm. So youâre going right?â I nodded which made her squeal with excitement. âIâm going to pick you up tomorrow afternoon so we can spend Ravelâs money!â
âI have work.â
She waved me off. âDonât worry about that, Ravel will handle it.â She placed both hands on the table and squirmed with excitement. âYour boyfriend gave me his black card, Do you know what that means?â
I shook my head.
âIt means we should spare no expense at making you look breathtaking on Saturday!â She winked at me. âHeâs your very own sugar daddy.â
