Chapter 25: 23 ♜ Quite Contrite

Spencer wanted to chase after her, knock down every door in Manhattan to find Amelie. But his droopy eyes and nearly limp body were begging him to go to sleep.

He didn't even have the energy to change out of his clothes. Instead he threw his blazer and tie onto a chair and slipped off his shoes before collapsing on top of the bed with a loud and dramatic groan.

He went to sleep knowing that when he woke up he would only have one objective; finding Amelie. And he prayed that their relationship wasn't over. He wasn't ready for it to be over.

Spencer woke up a few hours later, no more refreshed than he was when he went to sleep. But he didn't have time to go back to sleep. He needed to talk to Amelie. He needed to make amends.

He didn't regret leaving her to go see Madeline. But he did regret the manner in which he left. Amelie had let him off with so many things but he went too far this time.

It was seven o'clock which meant Amelie was probably going to head to the gym in a while. But where was she in the meantime? Spencer got dressed and headed to her old apartment praying that his suspicions were right. He pressed on the buzzer to her apartment and prayed she would let him in to talk to her.

"Hello?" Her voice rasped through the speakers.

Spencer let out a sigh of relief. "Amelie, it's me. Please let me in."

She scoffed. "That's not going to happen."

"Please. Look, I know I fucked up. I have a lot to explain. Just please give me a chance."

"Goodbye Spencer-"

"No, no, please. I have no excuses. I messed up and I should have considered your feelings. I was a massive asshole and I'm sorry. Just, please let me in."

He could hear her sigh before the line cut. He tried to open the door but it was still locked. Spencer groaned and leaned against the glass door, not knowing what to do. He could try buzzing again but annoying her wouldn't really help his case, would it?

Suddenly he heard the door click behind him. He lunged at it to open it before Amelie changed her mind. Then, he sprinted up two flights of stairs and to her door at the end of the corridor before rapping desperately on it.

He could see the shadow of her feet under the door but she didn't open immediately.

"Amelie..." He said slowly and softly. "Please."

The door handle slowly twisted and Amelie revealed herself behind the door. She rolled her eyes before walking away into her kitchen.

"I messed up," Spencer admitted.

Amelie continued to wordlessly sip her coffee.

"I don't know what came over me. I left in such an abrupt and careless way with no regard to how you would feel and-"

"You shouldn't have gone at all."

"Huh?"

Amelie licked her teeth, hesitant to speak but eventually she broke the silence.

"I'm going to talk and you're going to listen. You told me you used to be in love with Madeline and I was okay with that. After we became exclusive you slept with Madeline and I forgave you. You went to her rehearsal dinner, and don't try to deny it because yesterday Maria told me she saw you there, and then proceeded to ghost me afterwards. You went to her wedding, after telling me you wouldn't, because she called you and didn't sound okay. And I thought maybe seeing her get married would help you get over her. And I was okay with you going to talk to her as a friend. I planned a couple's retreat for us! But then you somehow convinced her not to get married and then, when you found out she fled, you abandoned me to go find her. Spencer, I have been patient. I have been so fucking patient with you. But I'm done. Because you're clearly not over her and I don't want to waste my time being a distraction for you."

Spencer shut his eyes and rubbed his head. God, he really was an asshole. "I..."

"Don't say sorry. I swear to god if you say sorry I am walking out."

He sighed and looked down at the floor. "I don't know what to say..."

Amelie rolled her eyes before placing her cup in the sink and dusting off her hands. "Tragic." She spat before walking out of the kitchen.

He tried to follow her but she grabbed her bag and walked through the front door, slamming it shut behind her.

Spencer didn't know whether to wait for her or not but he knew that if he left she might not let him back in again. Though he wouldn't blame her if she never wanted to speak to him again. Her hefty list made it clear that Spencer had been a terrible boyfriend. But he didn't want to lose another relationship. He was willing to do whatever it took to fix things between them. Just as long as she didn't break up with him.

He had no idea know where she went and by five o'clock he was beginning to worry.  She didn't have work so where was she? However, she returned by six with her hands full of plastic shopping bags and roses.

She peered suspiciously at Spencer. "You're still here?"

"I'm not going to leave you again."

She rolled her eyes and sat down beside him before carefully looking into his eyes.

"I have never been the type of girl to hand out ultimatums but I have to do this. Spencer, it's me or Madeline."

"I'm over her. I don't like her in that way. But she is my friend and she's going through a lot right now."

Amelie pursed her lips. "She has other friends. I know this isn't an easy decision but I told you how I feel about you already. So the ball's in your court. Either you stop seeing her or we break up."

Break-up? Woah, she was actually considering breaking up? It was that serious?

"But she's only a friend-"

"As long as you two are still friends, I can't be with you. You hurt me too much. And I gave you too many chances. I used to love Josh but I got over him. So why can't you do the same?"

And, just to top it off, at that moment, Spencer's phone pinged. He took out his phone to see who sent him the text and it was none other than Madeline Lockhart.

'Spence I need to see you. Urgently. Please come over'

Unfortunately, Amelie saw the message and scoffed. "Oh for fuck's sake! Kingsley, I am done with this!"

"Amelie-"

"No! It's me or her! She is blatantly texting you now to hook up!"

"It's not to hook up." Or at least he didn't think that was why she was texting him.

"Just choose. Because I'm sick of this."

Spencer looked at his phone then back at Amelie. What was he going to choose- a relationship with Amelie or a friendship with Madeline. He had to start thinking about his future, about the girl he wanted to spend the rest of his life with. Of course that girl made it clear that she didn't like him in that way. And there was another girl standing in front of him who was there for him at so many of his lows. She told him she loved him. She was willing to spend her life with him. She was ready for all the milestones to come. She wanted to be with him. For some reason, she still liked him, despite everything he did. He owed it to her.

Suppressing his doubts, Spencer took out his phone and went into Madeline's number in his contact list. Amelie's face fell.

"I choose you, Amelie," He affirmed before blocking Madeline's number in front of her.
