"I doubt I got it, Kingsley. They never even replied."

Spencer pecked Amelie's cheek before continuing to decorate their pancakes. He was throwing strawberries left, right and centre and adding whipped cream everywhere. It definitely wasn't the healthiest of breakfasts but it looked scrumptious. She sat atop the counter and Spencer glared at her whenever she picked off the berries on his masterpiece pancakes.

It had been two weeks since Amelie told him about her Washington offer. The 'offer', however, turned out not to be an actual offer for the job- it was an offer to apply for the job along with other applicants. It was still a pretty impressive feat but nothing was set in stone.

"Well they're idiots if they don't hire you. Their loss."

Amelie popped a sliced strawberry into her mouth and sighed. "I am kind of glad I get to stay with you now. Long distance is hard..."

Spencer rested his arms on the counter around her waist and kissed her.

"I'm glad you're staying too."

Her fingers wrapped around his jaw. "Open."

He opened his mouth compliantly with a confused look on his face. Amelie grinned as she grabbed the canister of whipped cream from his hand and sprayed it in his mouth. She chuckled before bending down to kiss him. His grip tightened around her waist as their kiss deepened. His fingers crawled up her legs as her lips moved to the back of his ear. Just as he began to slip off her underwear she let out a long breath and groaned.

"As much as I want to keep going, I need to get dressed for work!" Amelie sighed, wiping whipped cream off her chin with the back of her sleeve.

Spencer pouted. "Well from now on I'm going to keep a can of whipped cream in the bedroom."

Amelie grabbed another strawberry and popped it in Spencer's mouth. She inched closer to him and kissed the spot behind his ear before whispering. "I'll let you lick it off anywhere on my body."

Spencer walked away from Amelie's workplace with a lipstick mark on his cheek. He walked back his usual route home when he spotted a girl with familiar wild curls looking around cluelessly.

"Oh my God..." He gasped before running up to her. "Nora!"

Nora whipped around and squealed in glee when she saw him.  "Oh my God!" Nora engulfed him in a hug "What are you doing here?!"

"I was just walking my girlfriend to her internship job. She works in an office on this street. What are you doing here? I thought you and Oliver lived on the other side of town!"

Nora's smile fell. "Oh, Spence..." She sighed. "You've missed so much."

"Huh?" It was true that Spencer hadn't spoken to either Nora or Oliver in a while but not that much could have happened. But the solemn expression on Nora's face made him uneasy.

"Come with me to my apartment. I have a lot to tell you."

♜♡♜

Nora told him everything. She told him how Oliver's drug problem had escalated. She told him how he mercilessly berated her and called her the worst insults. She told him everything.

Spencer couldn't say he was surprised at Oliver's action. It fitted his MO. But, for some reason, Spencer thought Oliver and Nora's relationship would last forever. To the public eye it seemed to be the gold standard of relationships. Of course Spencer knew there were cracks in their relationship which mainly revolved around Oliver's recklessness. But he never thought they would break up.

"I can't believe it. I thought you and Oliver were forever..."

"Me too."

He put down his half eaten tray of sushi. Spencer didn't actually end up eating the pancakes he made that morning because, despite what Amelie said, they had time to squeeze in a quickie. So, he was justifiably famished and decided to order them both sushi which they had been picking at for the past half hour.

He crawled over to Nora and pulled her close to him in a hug. "I'm so sorry, Nor. You don't deserve this. I've always known Oliver was like that but I thought with age he would get better, you know?"

"I met Madeline yesterday," She said abruptly, changing the subject.

They had been talking about Oliver for the past two hours so Spencer didn't blame her for wanting to change topic. He tried to act normal when Nora said the M-word. Truth be told, he already knew they had met up. Nora had put up a photo of Madeline on Instagram. Maybe Madeline had put up a photo too except he wouldn't know because he was blocked from her page. He didn't want to ask Nora about their meeting as he was afraid of coming across as overly-suspicious. However, he did wonder if Madeline had spoken about him at all.

"Yeah, I know."

Nora shot up. "You know?! Did she tell you?! Are you and Madeline back together!? OH MY GOD THAT'S WHY YOU BOTH ARE IN NEW YORK. IS SHE THE GIRLFRIEND-"

Spencer rolled his eyes. "Nora, you put her up on your Instagram story," He deadpanned.

He let out an angry sigh. He didn't miss the excitement in her tone. She wanted them to be together. But Spencer was trying to quash that expectation. He was sick of missing Madeline, sick of spending hours wondering about what could have been. She was the one that got away and would stay that way. There were no more chances for them. He had Amelie to focus on now.

"I wish everyone would stop rooting for us. She's getting married. She chose Blake. She's the one that promised to call me when she was ready and never did. Nor, she told me she loved me and we were meant to be endgame. Then she never contacted me. When I saw her at your engagement party I was heartbroken. I love her-"

"Shit Spence.... you still love her?"

Well duh.

"I'll always love her. But I have to move on. And people telling me how I'm meant to be with her isn't really helping me move on. Things are going well with my girlfriend now. Seeing Madeline again really messed me up but I just have to forget her. It's not fair on, Amelie."

"Amelie? Was she one of the Fillers?"

"No she's way too cool to be a filler. She went to Carpe Diem Prep. She was their 'Madeline'. Not that I'm looking for someone to replace Madeline! I mean-"

"I understand," Nora chuckled, pointing her chopsticks at him. "I think I remember her now. Are you happy with her?"

"I am. What about Ben? Are you happy with him?"

Nora had told him about the new guy in her life. Truth be told, Spencer thought she was moving on a bit too fast. But she was so excited when she spoke about Ben that he didn't want to burst her bubble.

"I was afraid I moved on too quick. But he's so perfect. And dreamy-"

"Your Prince Charming?"

"Exactly!" Nora laughed but it quickly died down. "I still miss Oliver but I don't want to waste my youth on him."

"It's okay to still love him Nora. But he's not good for you. Don't get back together with him."

As much as Spencer loved Nora he also knew her well. He knew how much she loved Oliver and he really was afraid they would get back together despite everything he did.

"I don't want you to stop being friends with him just because we broke up."

He wouldn't stop being friends with Oliver. Even if he wanted to it would be kind of hard since he was always getting high with Charlie.

"I'm not going to stop being friends with him. I'm just going to tell him he needs help. But I'm on your side, Nora. Always."

And that was the God honest truth.

Spencer returned home and was notified by the doorman of his apartment complex that he got mail. He found a small envelope in his mailbox. It had a floral border on it and in the centre was Spencer's name in calligraphy.

Spencer inspected it suspiciously before carefully breaking the wax seal to open it and examine the whatever was inside. He pulled a cream-coloured card out of it with more calligraphy on it.

'We request the honour of your presence at the marriage of

MADELINE LOCKHART

AND

BLAKE RODRIGUEZ

On Saturday the...."

Spencer couldn't finish reading. He froze and stared at the words on the page, unable to make sense of them. A familiar pain was slowly hammering his heart. Flipping it over, he found a short handwritten note on the back, much to his shock.

'Despite everything that happened I still want my best friend there on my wedding day. -M"
