Spencer stared idly at Amelie as she smiled at him.
"Kingsley? Are you okay?"
"Uh...."
She rolled her eyes and walked back in. Spencer instinctively followed her, instantly regretting it when he entered the office. Now he really couldn't run away.
"Wait!" Wait?! Why was he telling her to wait?! If anything he should have been telling her to get out of the way of his upcoming word-vomit. Run for your life, Amelie! I'm about to fuck everything up!
She opened her office door and left it open for her to follow him. Her office was shared by two other interns but Spencer had spotted them in the break room so he and Amelie would have at least fifteen minutes alone before they returned to their shared office. She sat down at her desk first before gesturing to the opposite chair.
"So..."
"So..." Spencer replied, not knowing what else to say.
"Are we good?" Amelie asked bluntly. "I feel like you've been avoiding me for the past two days. Is everything okay?"
All he had to do was nod and say something reassuring. Confessing what he did wouldn't help either of them. It was a bad idea.
"I..."
Oh god. He was about to say it. He couldn't hold it in any longer. As he opened his mouth to speak, Amelie's phone rang and she answered it. Saved by the bell. Spencer let out a sigh of relief.
"Okay, I'll be right there," Amelie said before hanging up.
She stood up and walked towards Spencer.
"You can tell me anything, you know that?"
"Uh... y-yeah."
She bent down to kiss his cheek. "I just have to grab a file. But when I'm back, I'll take another break and we can go on a walk or something. Spend some time together."
"S-Sounds great!"
After Amelie left her office, Spencer groaned and banged his head back against the chair. "Idiot. Idiot. Idiot."
âââ
Spencer forced down any hints of his dirty truth and replied very vaguely whenever Amelie asked him about the party when they went on their walk. He made it through the full day without telling her the truth and, honestly? He felt kind of proud.
On the second day, Spencer saw an article about Madeline and Blake in a tabloid and wanted to scream and shout but instead he calmly ripped the magazine to shreds. When he met Amelie that night, she made a remark about how he was acting weird (which he totally was) and asked if everything was okay. He replied with a casual 'I'm Gucci'. On the fifth day, he was beginning to get used to the lie. By the eighth day he had buried the memory of Madeline deep in one of the junk drawers in his mind and tried to forget it ever happened. On the eighteenth day, Amelie mentioned Madeline's name as she was reading a magazine article about her fiancé, Blake, out loud and Spencer froze, suddenly remembering that night again. However, then Amelie kissed him and he lost his stream of thoughts. The spectacular thing about Amelie was that she was truly magical. She could make him forget about reality with just a kiss. Being with her was like being in a dream. He convinced himself that by not telling her the truth he was doing the right thing. Why ruin a good thing with an ugly truth? It meant nothing to Spencer. Nothing! He didn't have to confess to sleeping with Madeline if his relationship with Madeline wasn't going to go anywhere. No harm done!
On the twenty second day, however, Spencer cracked.
He and Amelie had been watching some documentary about World War II. Her legs were sprawled across his lap and they both felt content. All was going well. Then Amelie smirked at her phone.
"What's so funny?" Spencer asked.
She laughed again. "Oh, nothing. Josh just sent me a funny meme."
"Josh? The guy that is totally in love with you?"
Amelie looked up from her phone and smirked. "Are you jealous?" She teased.
"Nope. Because I know he's nothing compared to me," Spencer joked, flexing his non-existent biceps.
Amelie rolled her eyes and chuckled. She looked at Spencer like she had something on her mind. Spencer met her eyes and smiled encouragingly.
"What's up?"
"I know I said I wasn't ready for labels but... would you maybe want to be my boyfriend?"
Spencer paled. He didn't know why but he suddenly became very nervous. It wasn't that he didn't want it to be official. It was just that he couldn't be her boyfriend without telling her the truth first. If he didn't, their future together would be based on a lie.
"Oh."
"I mean, if you're not ready then we don't have to..." Amelie rambled with a hint of disappointment in her tone.
"No, no. It's not that... it's just... I did something. I did something bad a few weeks ago and I'm afraid it will stop you from wanting to be with me. It was my fault and I regretted it instantly and-"
She shook her head. "I don't need to know."
"But I-"
"Spencer, it's okay."
"Huh?"
She sighed and sat up straight. "Is it that you cheated?"
"How did you-"
"I'd recognise that look of remorse anywhere. Josh gave me that look when he cheated on me...."
"I'm so sorry... I really messed up. I understand if you want to break up..."
"We weren't official. So it's fine. I forgive you. I just want to know if you want to officially be my boyfriend."
Spencer's mind was going into overdrive. What....? Did he really just get away with cheating unscathed? Amelie just forgave him and he barely even had to say it out loud. Wow, she really was perfect.
"Of course. And thank you for forgiving me..."
Amelie smiled (although it didn't exactly reach her eyes) before kissing him.
"It's official!" She exclaimed before flopping back down and stretching her legs over Spencer's lap again. She whipped out her phone and continued to text.
Spencer smiled proudly. He had gotten away with it. He could put the memory in the past now. He could move on.
Amelie giggled at her phone again.
"Josh again?" Spencer asked bemusedly.
"Yeah. He just sent me another meme." Amelie showed it to Spencer and he laughed.
"He's hilarious."
"I know. But, don't worry. Just like how you and Madeline Lockhart are purely platonic, Josh and I are as well."
"I mean, Madeline and I slept together so maybe I should worry," He joked. But the joke fell flat as Amelie slowly looked up from her phone.
"You what?"
Spencer didn't think it was a big deal considering Amelie already forgave him. So he told her the truth.
"She's who I slept with! The night of Oliver and and Nora's engagement party. It's all in the past though, don't worry."
"What?!" Amelie mouthed formed an angry 'O' shape as she swung her legs away from him and stood up. "You slept with Madeline?!"
"Wait, what? I thought you forgave me-"
"Are you crazy?! You slept with Madeline and kept it from me for a month-"
"Twenty-three days actually-"
"You're unbelievable!" She stormed out of his living room and straight into the bedroom.
Spencer followed her and found her packing her overnight bag.
"Wait, I'm so confused. Amelie, wait. Amelie. Amelie!"
She stopped and looked at him. "What?!" She spat bitterly.
"You just said it was okay!"
She groaned. "Spencer, I thought you meant you slept with some stranger not the love of your life-"
"She's not the love of my life."
Amelie scoffed and continued to shove her clothes into her bag.
"Amelie, please stop. Let's just talk this out!"
"If you wanted to talk it out you would have told me after it happened! It wasn't meaningless sex. You loved her!"
"That's not true!"
"And now you're falling back in love with her again. I don't want to be second best."
Spencer walked up to her and held both of her hands. "Listen to me. You're perfect. I'm not falling back in love with Madeline. I like you and I like what we have."
"Yes but you and Madeline have history..." Her voice had become quieter and softer. "It's impossible to put everything that happened between you two in the past."
Spencer looked deep into her eyes and leaned closer so that their foreheads were touching. "It meant nothing to me." Liar.
"Spence-"
"I don't love her." Liar.
"Promise me that it's over between you two. Promise me you don't love her."
"I promise," He whispered before kissing her.
Liar.

We love a good 'Mean Girls' reference.
