Spencer's eyes kept darting to Madeline in the elevator. They were leaned on opposite walls, looking at and examining everything but each other. However, the long ride up to Madeline's penthouse suite meant every so often, they would accidentally look at each other and unintentionally lock eyes. Spencer wondered if Madeline could sense how nervous he was.

As the elevator opened straight into the sitting room of the hotel, Spencer's heart began to beat at light speed.

Madeline went in first, kicking off her heels as soon as she got in. Spencer hesitantly followed, ignoring the voice of reason in his head.

"So..." Madeline hummed, turning to face him.

A lot had changed in five years. But the attraction they had towards each other had not. Spencer quickly walked towards her and wrapped his arms around her waist before dipping down to kiss her.

He felt seventeen again. He felt an indescribable joy in his heart.

Madeline's lips moved in sync with his and her hands knotted in his hair. Spencer moved his hands to her legs so that he could pick her up. He felt this insatiable desire to get closer to her. Her legs hooked together behind his back as he carried her through the first door he saw.

"Spence, why are we in the kitchen?" Madeline giggled, between kisses.

Spencer shrugged and placed her on the high-top counter. He continued to kiss her as her soft (yet freakishly cold) hands, pulled his shirt over his head for him. After a few seconds of searching, Spencer finally located Madeline's dress zipper and yanked it down. However, underestimating his strength, the zipper came off in his hand.

"Aw, this dress is custom Versace!"

Spencer laughed. "I'll buy you a hundred more."

His lips attacked her neck with ferociously starved kisses that trailed behind her ear and down her neck. He had to unclasp the annoying diamond choker she was wearing and flung the priceless jewels onto the hard tile floor. They landed with a blasphemous 'clank' but they paid no attention to it. Madeline slipped out of her dress, revealing a dark red slip underneath. Her nails dug into the back of his shoulders as his kisses travelled lower down her neck. His hands trailed around her legs and gently moved them apart so that he could get closer to her.

"You're so beautiful..." Spencer exhaled, inching away to look at her. It was the first time they were going to sleep together and Spencer wanted to savour the moment, not rush it.

It really felt like everything in his past was building up to this moment. The consequences that would affect his future didn't matter. He was enjoying his present, stretching out every second in his mind and making sure the experience would remain engraved there forever.

Madeline's lips curled up into a splendid smile and her eyes glinted in the light. "I missed you so much, Spence."

"I missed you too, Maddie."

Spencer woke up to the sound of Madeline on the phone. The sun was beginning to rise, illuminating the room with a warm orange tinge and the birds began to croak again.

He mouthed a 'hello' at her.

"Hi Nora! It's Maddie!" She said into the phone, keeping eye contact with Spencer.

He wiggled his tongue at her as she continued to talk into the phone. She looked so beautiful. The sight of her made him want to burst into song.

" I just wanted to apologise for yesterday. I never meant to take all the attention from you and- "

"Hold me close and hold me fast, the magic spell you cast! This is la vie en rose!" He sang, bursting into song.

"Stop! I'm on the phone!" Madeline giggled.  "Sorry! Um, Spence and I came downstairs yesterday and couldn't find you or Oliver...."

Spencer tuned out and sat up properly, swinging his legs off the bed and onto the soft plush carpet. He pulled his boxers on before staring out the window. He focused on two little birds perched outside. As he stretched his arms, his smile slowly faded as the burst of elation passed him. It was like the feeling after a sugar rush.

"Hi," Madeline hummed at him after finishing her call. She returned to bed and rested her head against his back.

"Hey..."

"Last night was nice."

Truth be told, Spencer was still shocked by the events of the previous night. He couldn't believe what had happened.

"Definitely," He affirmed. "I can't believe it finally happened."

This was it. They were finally together. The idea was meant to give him glee but Spencer was more non-plussed than anything. He was so shocked that he had no idea how to feel or react. He didn't expect to feel like this.

"Me neither..." Madeline sighed, as she planted a long kiss on the nape of his neck. "The perfect goodbye."

Goodbye? Spencer slowly turned around to Madeline and looked at her. It was like the birds had suddenly stopped chirping in a record-scratch moment.

He remained silent. His muscles tensing and his jaw clenched tightly. What had he done?

"Shit," He eventually muttered, burying his head in his hands.

Madeline's lips pouted as concern masked her face. "What's wrong?"

Spencer shook his head quickly. "I-I can't do this. I fucked up."

Madeline's face fell and her eyebrows furrowed together in confusion. "I don't understand..."

"Nothing has changed for you.."

"Don't be silly. I finally got to be with you."

Spencer stared at the opposite wall as regret slowly began to erode his heart. Everything felt wrong. Wasn't he supposed to be happy? He had finally reunited with his love.

But that was the thing, wasn't it? He hadn't actually reunited with her. They had slept together but soon she would ultimately go back to her life with her fiancé. Meanwhile, Spencer would have to go back to Amelie and decide whether or not he would confess.

It wasn't just regret he was feeling. It was remorse. Remorse is a funny feeling. Regret implies a flippant 'I wish I didn't do that' but remorse is on a whole other level of depth. Remorse is that feeling you get when you do something so wrong and so immoral that it slowly eats at you.

"But you're going to stay with Blake."

"Well, yes. Of course, I'm marrying him."

"So this meant nothing to you?"

"Spencer... you're being weird. Of course it meant something to me. It meant goodbye."

Spencer suddenly stood up. "How can you just go back to him after this?" He spat bitterly.

Any trace of a smile quickly disappeared from Madeline's face and was replaced with a scowl. "I was very clear with you that Blake and I are in an open relationship-"

"Yes! But that was after we kissed. I think sex is different!"

"No, it's not! It was fun but I'm with Blake-"

"So this entire night was just 'fun' for you? It meant nothing but carefree fun. I cheated on my girlfriend for a one-night stand?!"

Madeline froze as Spencer quickly realised what blurted. Oh no.

"Girlfriend?! YOU TOLD ME YOU WERE SINGLE!" Madeline bellowed.

"I-"

"You- you-you selfish asshole!" She shouted pointedly. "Ugh, I cannot believe you. You just pulled an 'Oliver', congratulations!"

"She's not my girlfriend exactly! I mean we're exclusive but- well- she and I- hey, you're no angel either! You're marrying Blake despite what just happened between us!"

"It's not like I cheated on him. We both sleep with other people-"

"Yes but deep down you know something has changed. I'm not just some stranger. We have history. You know this wasn't just a one-night stand. I know it meant something to you-"

"Spencer-"

"You won't be able to just forget about this and move on!

"Ugh, screw you, Spencer! You're a cheating asshole. I never imagined I would ever be back in this position. I'm the side chick again!" She exclaimed maniacally. She bent over to pick up his clothes before throwing them at him. "Get out!"

"Gladly! Ugh, I can't believe I fell for your charms again!"

"Ditto. Now, leave!" Madeline swung open the door and tossed his shoes outside her room. "Leave!"

Spencer rolled his eyes and marched out, slamming the door behind him. He angrily threw on his clothes before entering the elevator and descending down to the hotel's ground floor. As he slowly caught his breath and his fists unclenched, that feeling of remorse returned. Except this time, it wasn't just because he cheated on Amelie...

A/N;

All that glisters is not gold—

Often have you heard that told.

Many a man his life hath sold
