This week has been hell.
Iâm exhausted.
I busted my ass.
But itâs been worth it.
I got offered the apprenticeship and I canât wait to tell everyone.
I want to tell them in person.
I messaged Yasmin as often as I could this week. Everyone kept me updated and she even called me one morning at four a.m. because she had a night terror. She was apologetic for waking me. But honestly her calling gave me the push that I needed. As soon as Iâm showered, Iâm going to her house and Iâm not letting her push me away.
I need to hold her.
I walk in the front door and stop when I hear voices in the kitchen. I immediately recognise Yasminâs Dadâs voice.
âI donât know how to help her Nat,â he says. âShe freaks out at the smallest of things. Itâs no way to live her life. This weekâs been hard for me. I know in the past I was never home to notice but this week, sheâs like a shell of a person. Sheâs not sleeping. I hear her wake up screaming. I didnât even know she had night terrors.â His voice waivers. He was an asshole the last time he was here. Itâs obvious something has changed.
âYou know her night terrors stopped when she was here?â Mum asks him.
âNo, really?â
âYeah, Chase told me she used to get them every night. But while she was with him, they stopped. I donât know what happened in the past, but I do know that both her and Chase are better together. The whole group is. Theyâre good kids David. You have to trust Yasmin and trust them. I donât think this is something you can get her through. I think it might be better to let them do it,â Mum tells him with a firm voice. I love that she doesnât let him walk all over her.
âI know youâve been trying this week, but one week isnât going to make up for the years that youâve been absent. Both the girls are pretty much adults. They donât need you; theyâve shown you that. Show them that youâre there when they do need you without pushing. Let them come to you.â
âI just want them to be happy. Especially Yasmin.â
âI know, which is why Iâm telling you to let Chase, Arden, Rhys and Ally be the ones to get her through this. Sheâs a part of their family and sheâs happy when sheâs with them. She laughs, has fun. She gets to be a teenager,â Mum tells him.
âOkay. What do I do?â He asks.
I decide nowâs a good time to make my presence known.
âLeave that to me,â I say, walking around the corner and startling them both.
âYouâre back early,â Mum says.
âThere wasnât any traffic.â I turn to David. âDo I have your permission to use your house tonight? Fair warning, Iâll be spending the night. The others may as well, or theyâll come back here.â I ask him. If he doesnât give us permission, Iâll find a way to get her here or to Ardenâs. It just works better if we can go to her.
âWhy? I donât want any parties in the house. Especially with Millie there,â he says with an edge to his voice. He still doesnât like the idea of Yasmin and I. Itâs clear. But I donât care.
âIf you knew your daughter like I do, youâd know that a party isnât what she needs. Millie will always be safe when she is with us. If you must know, we are going to show up with all her favourite things and spend the night watching Disney movies, eating junk food, and laughing. Itâs what she needs. To be with her family,â I say while waiting for my words to sink in.
I see the defeat take over.
âWhy donât we go to dinner tonight?â Mum asks, trying to distract David.
âItâs okay Nat, Iâll pick up a shift at the station. Iâm not happy about you staying, but I know if I say no, youâll just come back here. Promise me youâll look after her?â He says.
âAlways. I donât know what happened in the past, but when sheâs ready, sheâll tell me. I miss her. We all do. Sheâs had time to think. Now weâre going to help her,â I say with an authority in my voice that wasnât there before.
I donât like the way David treated Yasmin. I donât like that he was absent most of their lives. He may be her father, but I donât need his permission. I asked out of respect for Mum. She raised me to respect my elders.
But she knows that Iâd find a way if David didnât agree.
David looks away and Mum gives me a small smile.
âI got offered the apprenticeship,â I tell mum while ignoring David.
She rushes from the table to give me hug.
âIâm so proud of you,â Mum whispers in my ear.
âThanks Mum.â Iâve worked hard to get here. I have a foot in the door for my dream job, I get to live with my best friends next year and Iâll hopefully get to be with the girl who stole my heart when we were too young to even know it was happening. Everything is starting to pay off.
âIâm going to organise the gang. Breakfast tomorrow to celebrate?â I ask Mum.
âYep I expect you all to be here at eight,â she says, moving back to the table. I love that Mum knows that weâre all a package deal.
âAll right. Iâm going to organise the gang,â I say as I walk out of the kitchen and head to my room. Just before Iâm completely out of earshot, I hear Mum speak.
âTrust him David. He knows what heâs doing, and I think heâs the best thing for her right now.â
I donât wait for his response.
âYo, you back?â Arden says by way of greeting when the phone connects.
âYep. Are you busy?â
âNope, Iâm with Rhys and Ally. Weâve been waiting for you to get back so we can discuss how weâre going to get our girl back.â
âOur girl? Put me on speaker phone.â
âYes, sheâs our girl. You might be dating her, but sheâs our friend and we want her back already,â Arden explains.
I move around the room getting some clothes ready.
âWhatâs the plan?â Ally asks.
âWe need to get supplies and go to her house,â I tell them.
âThat wonât work. Her dad isnât our biggest fan and from what Julia told me, heâs been around a lot more this week,â Arden says again.
âHer dad wonât be a problem. Heâs here talking to Mum. She pretty much told him to trust us. Heâs not happy, but he isnât going to get in the way,â I explain to them, giving them the short version of the conversation that was just had.
âOkay, so what supplies do you want us to get?â Ally asks.
âSnacks, dinner, drinks. The usual. You guys know what she likes.â
âI donât think Chinese is a good idea. Should we do pizza instead?â Rhys asks.
âGood idea.â Rhys told me he spoke to her this week and theyâve worked out some of their issues. Itâs nice to see heâs making an effort.
âI had Martha make brownies and muffins in the hope that weâd be beating down her door this weekend,â Arden adds.
Ally laughs at him.
âWeâre not beating down her door,â she says to Arden. âWait⦠thatâs not the plan is it?â Ally asks sounding a little worried.
Itâs my turn to laugh.
âNo, we arenât beating down her door. Sheâll let us in,â I say confidently.
âAre you sure?â
âYes, Iâm sure. She may not realise it, but deep down sheâs expecting us. She just doesnât know when.â
âOkay,â Ally agrees hesitantly.
âWeâll meet you at your place in half an hour,â Arden tells me.
âOkay. See you soon.â

âIâm not wearing them,â Rhys says walking into the lounge room.
âWearing what?â I ask standing to greet my friends.
âThose. I have a reputation to maintain,â Rhys says pointing to the bag that Arden is holding. Arden throws me the bag.
âItâs a good idea. Sheâll love it,â Arden replies.
Slowly opening the bag, I look inside and then back up to Arden. I donât know what the hell he was thinking. But weâre definitely doing it. Reputation be damned.
