Chapter 6: Tensions and Tests
The golden hues of the setting sun bathed the Southern pack's territory in a peaceful light, but Jungkook's mind was anything but calm. Walking alongside Taehyung, the weight of leadership hung heavy on his shoulders. He couldn't shake the lingering thoughts of his stepmother and her manipulation, and his protective instincts toward Taehyung flared with every step.
He glanced at Taehyung, his Luna, whose soft, comforting presence always seemed to calm him. But even Taehyung wasn't immune to the tension that hung in the air. The pups had long since settled down for the night, their energy finally fading after hours of play, but Jungkook couldn't seem to let go of the unease gnawing at him.
"Are you okay?" Taehyung asked, breaking the silence. His voice was soft, but his eyes were filled with concern as he looked up at Jungkook.
Jungkook gave him a tired smile. "I should be asking you that. After everything that's happened... with the attack, the packs... I should be doing more to protect you and the pups."
Taehyung, ever the source of strength and confidence, gave him a gentle nudge. "I'm fine, Kookie. You know I can handle myself. But I do appreciate the concern. It's what makes you a good alpha."
Jungkook's heart swelled at the words, but before he could respond, a voice cut through the moment, one that instantly sent a chill down his spine.
"Jungkook, Taehyung."
Jungkook's muscles tensed, his hand instinctively moving to where he usually carried his dagger. Standing not far from them, with a sneer on her face, was none other than his stepmother, the one person who could send the most capable leader into a seething fury.
Her icy gaze flicked between them. "Well, if it isn't my precious son and his precious Luna."
Jungkook's protective instinct flared as his eyes narrowed at her, but he said nothing. Taehyung stepped in front of him, instinctively taking the position that he always did when trouble loomed. His eyes glinted with the same fierceness he always carried, but his voice was cool as he spoke.
"What do you want this time?" Taehyung's voice dripped with annoyance.
His stepmother's smile was condescending as she crossed her arms, clearly savoring the moment. "Oh, nothing. Just thought I'd remind you both of your place. After all, you're just a mere omega, Taehyung," she sneered at him. "And we both know your pups, while precious, are nothing more than a result of a temporary weakness from Jungkook."
Jungkook's wolf snarled at the insult, but he managed to keep his composure, stepping forward to stand beside Taehyung. "Leave, now," Jungkook commanded, his voice a low growl.
But his stepmother wasn't finished. She looked over at him with a calculating gaze, her words cutting like a blade. "You know, Jungkook, you may think you're in control of your pack, but there are those who think your decisions are... less than ideal. You're surrounded by weaklings, and soon enough, you'll see how your little omega mate is nothing but a liability."
Taehyung's eyes narrowed as his lip curled into a slight snarl. "You keep underestimating me, don't you?"
His stepmother ignored him, focusing on Jungkook. "I've been thinking, Jungkook," she said with feigned sweetness. "Perhaps it's time for a change. A new Luna. I have someone in mind, someone who could strengthen our pack. Someone who would be a better fit for you. My friend's daughter, Minji. She's everything you need-strong, resourceful, and capable."
Jungkook's blood ran cold, the words sinking into his skin like daggers. He took a slow, deliberate step toward her, his voice icy. "What are you saying?"
She smiled sweetly, but the venom behind it was undeniable. "I'm saying that Taehyung is too soft for this pack. He doesn't have the strength to stand by your side in the way that I've envisioned. My friend's daughter will be a perfect match for you. Minji has everything you need to ensure the future of this pack."
Jungkook's wolf raged inside him, but he kept his calm. His gaze turned to Taehyung, who stood firm, but Jungkook could see the hurt in his eyes. This was the second time his stepmother had tried to undermine their bond, and it was clear to him now that she wouldn't stop until she had what she wanted.
"I'm not going to let you tear us apart," Jungkook said quietly, but there was a deadly edge to his tone. "Taehyung is my mate. He's the Luna of this pack, and nothing, and no one, will change that."
His stepmother's smile faltered, but she didn't back down. "You think so? There are always ways to undo things, Jungkook. Don't forget that."
Taehyung stepped closer to Jungkook, his eyes blazing with unspoken fury. "Enough," Taehyung said, his voice unshakable. "You're wasting both of our time. You may have the influence you think you do, but I'll be damned if you try to put us against each other. I won't let you make me feel inferior anymore."
Jungkook reached for Taehyung's hand, giving it a reassuring squeeze, before his eyes turned back to his stepmother. "Leave. I don't care what your plans are, but if you ever try this again, I will make sure there are consequences. You'll never be Luna."
For a moment, there was silence, the tension thick between them. Jungkook's stepmother glared at them both, but she finally huffed, her gaze cold. "Fine. But remember, Jungkook, nothing lasts forever. I'll be waiting for the day you see the truth."
Without another word, she turned and left, her footsteps echoing through the still forest.
Jungkook stood still for a moment, his fingers tightening around Taehyung's hand. He could feel his heart pounding in his chest, but his anger was tempered by the need to protect the one person he loved more than anything.
"Are you alright?" Jungkook asked softly, his voice filled with concern.
Taehyung gave him a tired, small smile, though it didn't reach his eyes. "I'm fine. She doesn't scare me. But she won't stop, will she?"
"No. She won't," Jungkook answered, his voice hardening. "But I won't let her hurt you. I won't let her destroy what we've built."
Taehyung squeezed his hand. "I'm with you, Kookie. Always."
Just then, a loud commotion broke through the tense silence. Jungkook turned sharply, sensing the urgency in the atmosphere.
"Alpha Jungkook!" The pack messenger arrived, breathless and frantic. "There's a situation at the border. A challenge from another pack. They're testing your leadership."
Jungkook's eyes hardened, his instincts kicking in. He looked to Taehyung. "Stay with the pups. I'll handle this."
Taehyung nodded, his gaze unwavering. "Be careful, Jungkook."
With one final squeeze of Taehyung's hand, Jungkook turned to face the new threat. He knew the test ahead would be difficult, but he wasn't worried. He would fight, not just for the pack, but for the family he held dear. No one would tear them apart.
