Chapter 2: Shadows in the Dark
The night fell over the forest with an unsettling silence. The air grew heavier, thick with the weight of unspoken tension. Jungkook, standing at the edge of the clearing near the pack's campfire, watched the stars above. They were beautiful-silent, distant, untouched by the conflicts brewing below. Yet, despite the serenity of the night, Jungkook couldn't shake the gnawing feeling in his chest. The packs around them were growing restless, and he could feel their eyes on his family. His Omega. His pups.
His Luna.
Taehyung was asleep inside their shared tent, the soft sound of his breathing filling the space between them. Jungkook knew he should be with him, protecting him, holding him close as they navigated the growing threats. But the Alpha king had always been the protector, the one who kept everything in balance. His role was clear, and no matter how much he longed to be with Taehyung, his duties came first.
Jungkook's thoughts were interrupted by a soft rustling from behind him. He turned, his sharp instincts alerting him before he even saw the figure stepping out from the shadows.
"Jimin," Jungkook greeted, his voice as cold as the night air. "What news?"
Jimin, his Beta and most trusted confidant, stepped forward, his expression hard. "There's movement along the borders, Alpha. Another pack is advancing toward us. They've been watching us for days. I think they plan to make a move soon."
Jungkook's eyes narrowed, his muscles tensing instinctively. His Alpha senses were on high alert now. He didn't need to be told twice. He could feel the unease in the air, a crackling energy that only came when danger was near.
"Any sign of who they are?" Jungkook asked, his tone sharp, demanding answers.
"It's the Southern pack," Jimin replied, his voice tight. "I've heard whispers... they think Taehyung's fair game."
Jungkook's jaw clenched. Taehyung, his Luna, was far from "fair game." The very thought of another Alpha even considering his mate sent a dangerous wave of rage through his veins.
"I want them gone," Jungkook growled. "Tonight."
Jimin hesitated for a moment, sensing the fury in his Alpha's voice. "Alpha, we can handle it quietly. No need for bloodshed just yet. We don't want to provoke a full-scale war."
Jungkook's eyes darkened, his gaze piercing as he looked into the distance. "I've had enough of quiet. Let them come. I'll make sure they never think of my Luna again."
The words were barely a whisper, but they carried a weight that sent a chill down Jimin's spine. Jungkook's wrath was something feared by even the most powerful Alphas. The Southern pack didn't know what they were about to face.
"Understood," Jimin said quietly, bowing his head. "I'll get the others ready."
Jungkook turned back toward the tent where Taehyung lay. His heart softened just slightly at the thought of his Luna-his mate. The one person who had always been there for him, even in his darkest moments. Jungkook owed everything to him, and the idea of someone hurting Taehyung made his blood burn.
The faintest smile tugged at his lips as he thought back to their childhood.
Flashback
It was a quiet afternoon in the woods, and a young Jungkook found himself wandering deeper than he usually did. His pack had been busy with their own affairs, leaving him to his thoughts. But then, from behind a cluster of trees, he heard it.
A laugh. A giggle, full of innocence and mischief.
He rounded the corner and saw a young Taehyung, maybe only five or six at the time, standing by the edge of a small creek, his hands stained with the remnants of mud from a half-finished project. He was holding a few wildflowers, his hair a mess, and a grin stretched across his face.
Jungkook couldn't help but laugh. "What are you doing?" he asked, his voice teasing.
Taehyung looked up, startled at first, before his smile grew even wider. "I'm making you a flower crown," he said, holding them up proudly.
Jungkook raised an eyebrow, amused by the gesture. "A flower crown? For me?"
"Yes!" Taehyung replied with a nod, as though it was the most natural thing in the world. "You look like a king, and kings need crowns!"
Jungkook chuckled and knelt down beside him, taking the flowers. "You know, I don't really like flowers."
Taehyung pouted, his bottom lip sticking out in a way that made Jungkook's heart ache even back then. "But I want you to have one. Please?"
How could he say no to that?
The flashback ended as quickly as it had come, leaving Jungkook standing in the present, his eyes dark with an unfamiliar sadness. That day, that simple, innocent moment, had been the start of something he hadn't understood back then. The start of the bond that would become unbreakable. Jungkook had grown into the Alpha he was now, but Taehyung had always been his anchor, even when he hadn't known it.
Taehyung.
He couldn't allow anyone to take him from him. Jungkook wouldn't just burn the Southern pack down-he would make sure that no one, no one at all, would ever threaten his family again.
The sound of soft footsteps pulled him from his thoughts, and he turned to see Taehyung standing at the entrance of the tent, his face half-lit by the glow of the fire. His eyes met Jungkook's, and for a moment, the world seemed to stop.
"Jungkook," Taehyung said softly, his voice almost a whisper. "You're planning something."
Jungkook's expression softened as he approached his Luna. "I'm protecting you," he murmured, his hand gently cupping Taehyung's face. "And our pups."
Taehyung studied him for a long moment before a knowing smile spread across his lips. "I know," he said, his voice warm with understanding. "But you don't have to do it alone. We're a pack, Jungkook. We protect each other."
Jungkook's heart clenched at the words, but he quickly masked the raw emotions bubbling beneath the surface. He couldn't show weakness. Not now.
"I'll make sure they never touch you," he said, his voice firm, with a hint of something darker beneath.
Taehyung's eyes softened, but he didn't protest. Instead, he leaned forward, pressing his lips to Jungkook's forehead in a quiet, gentle kiss. "I love you," he murmured, his voice carrying the weight of everything they had been through together.
"I love you too," Jungkook whispered back, his grip tightening around Taehyung. "And I'll burn the world if I have to."
As they stood together in the quiet night, with their pups safe within the camp, the shadows of their enemies loomed closer. But Jungkook would face them all. For Taehyung. For his family.
Nothing would stand in his way.
