Chapter 12: The Calm Before the Storm
The aftermath of the confrontation with Jungkookâs stepmother lingered in the air, but life in the pack had to move forward. Despite the tensions and Taehyungâs relentless roasting, Jungkook couldnât shake the nagging feeling that things were about to get even worse. He had always known that his stepmother was a snake, but now it felt like her plans were reaching a dangerous point.
Taehyung, as always, was doing his best to keep the mood light. But even his endless roasts couldnât fully hide the storm brewing on the horizon.
The pack gathered in the common room for their usual evening meal. Taehyung sat beside Jungkook, his usual playful grin plastered across his face. He nudged Jungkook with his elbow, whispering, âYou know, Iâve been thinking about your stepmother. Sheâs like a bad sequel to a movie you didnât even like the first time around.â
Jungkook chuckled, appreciating Taehyungâs humor even in dark times. But it didnât quite reach his eyes. There was a weight to his gaze as he stared into the distance, as if he was already preparing for the worst.
âYouâre right,â Jungkook replied, his voice low. âBut the problem is, sheâs not just annoying anymore. Sheâs becoming a real threat.â
Taehyungâs grin faltered for a moment as he studied Jungkookâs expression. He could feel the tension, the anxiety that his mate tried so hard to hide. He reached out, placing a hand on Jungkookâs shoulder.
âHey,â Taehyung said softly, his voice full of understanding. âWeâll figure this out. Together. You and me, weâre unstoppable. And donât forget, we have our pups to protect. You think sheâs gonna mess with them? Not if I have anything to say about it.â
Jungkookâs eyes softened, and he gave a small nod. Taehyungâs confidence was infectious, and even if Jungkook wasnât fully convinced, the warmth in his mateâs words gave him a sense of comfort.
But their moment of peace was short-lived. The door to the hall slammed open, and a flurry of footsteps echoed through the room. It was one of the packâs scouts, looking panicked.
âAlpha Jungkook! Alpha Jungkook!â the scout shouted, rushing toward them. âWeâve got a situation. A rival packâone we havenât dealt with beforeâis moving closer to our territory.â
Jungkook stood up immediately, his face hardening. Taehyungâs playful demeanor melted away as he too stood at attention. Their pups, who had been playing in the corner, immediately quieted at the change in atmosphere.
âWho are they?â Jungkook demanded, his voice commanding.
âTheyâre a smaller pack, but theyâre aggressive,â the scout explained, breathless. âTheyâve been taking land from other packs, and it looks like theyâre eyeing yours next. Their Alpha⦠heâs ruthless. He wonât stop until he has what he wants.â
Jungkook clenched his fists, his knuckles white. âHow many?â
âAbout thirty warriors, all armed and ready for a fight.â
âDamn it,â Taehyung muttered under his breath. His eyes flicked to the children, worry creeping into his chest. His playful roasts and teasing had always been his way of shielding those he loved from the harsh realities of life, but he couldnât pretend everything was fine anymore.
âGather the pack,â Jungkook ordered, his voice cold. âWe need to prepare for the worst.â
As the scout rushed off to relay the orders, Taehyung turned to Jungkook. âWeâll make it through this. Weâve dealt with worse. And this pack? They have no idea what theyâre up against.â
Jungkook shot him a small smile. âYouâre right. But weâll need everyoneâs strength. Even if we have to burn the world down.â
Taehyungâs grin returned. âNow, thatâs the spirit. Letâs show them exactly who theyâre messing with.â

Later that night, the pack assembled in the central training grounds. Jungkook was at the head of the group, his eyes steely and determined. His pack had always been strong, but this new challenge felt different. His instincts told him that this rival Alpha was no ordinary threat.
Taehyung stood beside him, his hands on his hips. Despite the gravity of the situation, he couldnât help but crack a joke to lighten the mood.
âAlright, team,â he said, addressing the warriors who had gathered. âI know weâre all serious and ready to fight, but letâs not forget: Weâre the real VIPs around here. So, if any of those other pack members try to steal our spotlight, just point them my way. Iâll roast them into submission.â
A few of the warriors chuckled, the tension easing for just a moment. Taehyungâs charisma was undeniable, and even in the face of danger, he had the power to lift spirits.
Jungkook shot Taehyung a grateful glance. Despite everything, his mate had this incredible ability to bring light into the darkest of moments.
But the calm didnât last long.
A shadowy figure appeared at the edge of their territory, flanked by two large warriors. It was the Alpha of the rival pack, his dark eyes scanning the land with an air of arrogance.
Jungkookâs posture stiffened. âSo, it begins.â
Taehyung glanced at him, his eyes sharp. âYou sure youâre ready for this, Kook?â
Jungkook took a deep breath. âIâm ready. Letâs protect our pack.â
And with that, the storm that had been looming on the horizon finally arrived. The pack prepared for battle, and Taehyungâs protective instincts kicked in. No matter what happened, he would stand by Jungkookâs side, ready to fight for their pack, their family, and the love they shared.
