Chapter 12: The Calm Before the Storm

The aftermath of the confrontation with Jungkook’s stepmother lingered in the air, but life in the pack had to move forward. Despite the tensions and Taehyung’s relentless roasting, Jungkook couldn’t shake the nagging feeling that things were about to get even worse. He had always known that his stepmother was a snake, but now it felt like her plans were reaching a dangerous point.

Taehyung, as always, was doing his best to keep the mood light. But even his endless roasts couldn’t fully hide the storm brewing on the horizon.

The pack gathered in the common room for their usual evening meal. Taehyung sat beside Jungkook, his usual playful grin plastered across his face. He nudged Jungkook with his elbow, whispering, “You know, I’ve been thinking about your stepmother. She’s like a bad sequel to a movie you didn’t even like the first time around.”

Jungkook chuckled, appreciating Taehyung’s humor even in dark times. But it didn’t quite reach his eyes. There was a weight to his gaze as he stared into the distance, as if he was already preparing for the worst.

“You’re right,” Jungkook replied, his voice low. “But the problem is, she’s not just annoying anymore. She’s becoming a real threat.”

Taehyung’s grin faltered for a moment as he studied Jungkook’s expression. He could feel the tension, the anxiety that his mate tried so hard to hide. He reached out, placing a hand on Jungkook’s shoulder.

“Hey,” Taehyung said softly, his voice full of understanding. “We’ll figure this out. Together. You and me, we’re unstoppable. And don’t forget, we have our pups to protect. You think she’s gonna mess with them? Not if I have anything to say about it.”

Jungkook’s eyes softened, and he gave a small nod. Taehyung’s confidence was infectious, and even if Jungkook wasn’t fully convinced, the warmth in his mate’s words gave him a sense of comfort.

But their moment of peace was short-lived. The door to the hall slammed open, and a flurry of footsteps echoed through the room. It was one of the pack’s scouts, looking panicked.

“Alpha Jungkook! Alpha Jungkook!” the scout shouted, rushing toward them. “We’ve got a situation. A rival pack—one we haven’t dealt with before—is moving closer to our territory.”

Jungkook stood up immediately, his face hardening. Taehyung’s playful demeanor melted away as he too stood at attention. Their pups, who had been playing in the corner, immediately quieted at the change in atmosphere.

“Who are they?” Jungkook demanded, his voice commanding.

“They’re a smaller pack, but they’re aggressive,” the scout explained, breathless. “They’ve been taking land from other packs, and it looks like they’re eyeing yours next. Their Alpha… he’s ruthless. He won’t stop until he has what he wants.”

Jungkook clenched his fists, his knuckles white. “How many?”

“About thirty warriors, all armed and ready for a fight.”

“Damn it,” Taehyung muttered under his breath. His eyes flicked to the children, worry creeping into his chest. His playful roasts and teasing had always been his way of shielding those he loved from the harsh realities of life, but he couldn’t pretend everything was fine anymore.

“Gather the pack,” Jungkook ordered, his voice cold. “We need to prepare for the worst.”

As the scout rushed off to relay the orders, Taehyung turned to Jungkook. “We’ll make it through this. We’ve dealt with worse. And this pack? They have no idea what they’re up against.”

Jungkook shot him a small smile. “You’re right. But we’ll need everyone’s strength. Even if we have to burn the world down.”

Taehyung’s grin returned. “Now, that’s the spirit. Let’s show them exactly who they’re messing with.”

Later that night, the pack assembled in the central training grounds. Jungkook was at the head of the group, his eyes steely and determined. His pack had always been strong, but this new challenge felt different. His instincts told him that this rival Alpha was no ordinary threat.

Taehyung stood beside him, his hands on his hips. Despite the gravity of the situation, he couldn’t help but crack a joke to lighten the mood.

“Alright, team,” he said, addressing the warriors who had gathered. “I know we’re all serious and ready to fight, but let’s not forget: We’re the real VIPs around here. So, if any of those other pack members try to steal our spotlight, just point them my way. I’ll roast them into submission.”

A few of the warriors chuckled, the tension easing for just a moment. Taehyung’s charisma was undeniable, and even in the face of danger, he had the power to lift spirits.

Jungkook shot Taehyung a grateful glance. Despite everything, his mate had this incredible ability to bring light into the darkest of moments.

But the calm didn’t last long.

A shadowy figure appeared at the edge of their territory, flanked by two large warriors. It was the Alpha of the rival pack, his dark eyes scanning the land with an air of arrogance.

Jungkook’s posture stiffened. “So, it begins.”

Taehyung glanced at him, his eyes sharp. “You sure you’re ready for this, Kook?”

Jungkook took a deep breath. “I’m ready. Let’s protect our pack.”

And with that, the storm that had been looming on the horizon finally arrived. The pack prepared for battle, and Taehyung’s protective instincts kicked in. No matter what happened, he would stand by Jungkook’s side, ready to fight for their pack, their family, and the love they shared.
