âAnd then we kind of just walked out,â Joan said with a small, nervous chuckle. âIt was actually kind of anti-climatic at that point. Soldiers showed up, Chase escorted Penthe to the teleportation circle so she could summon her armor. We got a lot of confused looks. Then she brought me back here, shoved everyone out of the room and helped me get the armor off. Still not sure how worried I should be about that.â
Bauteut took a slow, deep breath. Then, very slowly, she reached out a hand and placed it on Joanâs shoulder. âJoan. I just want to say, I truly do appreciate knowing all of this.â
âReally?â Joan asked.
âYes,â Bauteut said. âBecause when you just disappeared? All we knew was that you were gone and some weird guy had popped into the middle of the building. Itâs good to know you didnât intentionally run off after we got here.â
Joan gave a sheepish smile to her. âY-yeah. Sorry about that. I really did want all of you to come here. And uhhh, sorry, Francis. Ifrit.â
âWhy are you sorry?â Ifrit asked, her head resting on Francisâ shoulder.
âBecause I kind of did everything for you two,â Joan said. âI was supposed to help you but then I did it myself. Iâm uhhhh, not always the best at getting help.â
âIfrit is okay,â Francis said, though there was a bit of hesitancy to his words. âThatâs all I care about. All I ever cared about. Youâre sure they wonât come after her again?â
âDoubt it,â Joan said with a shrug. âBut⦠that doesnât mean others wonât. I mean, Ifrit, youâre kind ofâ¦â
âOne of a kind,â Ifrit said softly.
âClose enough,â Joan said. âIâm sure thereâs others like you in the world. But if one person found out about you, others might. Word might spread and wellâ¦â
âMore people will come after me,â Ifrit said. âUntil I die, theyâll keep coming after me.â
Francis reached down and took her hand, giving it a small squeeze. âIâll protect you, I promise. I wonât let anyone hurt you.â
Ifrit just gave a small nod, though the smile she gave was halfhearted. Joan couldnât really blame her. There was no telling when the next person would come and decide her life was a fair price for their wish. But at least Francis wouldnât leave her, so one of her wishes could come true.
âYou can stay with the Chosen,â Joan said. âTheyâll keep you safe.â
âSo those really are my options, arenât they?â Ifrit asked. âRunning, hiding and being eternally a bother to those around me?â
âYouâre not a bother,â Francis said firmly.
âIâm not sure what else youâd call it,â Ifrit said. âI do appreciate it, truly. Having so many people I can depend on is⦠more than I ever expected. Butâ¦â
âBut youâd like a chance to live your life without all this weighing you down?â Joan asked. The djinn gave a small nod. âI canât blame you. It sucks. Weâll find a solution eventually, Iâm sure. Just ask Qakog,â she said before glancing to the demon.
Qakog sat up in his chair a little taller. âIndeed! Iâll find a solution and earn the title⦠uhhhhâ¦â
âWishslayer?â Bauteut offered.
âYES!â Qakog said, the giddy grin and excitement in his tone infectious. Within a few moments they were all snickering lightly.
âIâm sure thereâs a solution, somewhere,â Joan said. âAnd weâll find it. Maybe Penthe has some solutions we can try. Though, speaking of Pentheâ¦â She glanced between Bauteut and Qakog. âIâm surprised you two havenât been asking more about her. Last time you two saw her it wasnât exactly⦠wellâ¦â
âWeâve seen her a lot in the last few months,â Bauteut said. âNot talked to her much, but sheâs been one of the most⦠visible amongst the Demon Lordâs forces.â
âOh,â Joan said, the smile falling off her face. âRight. You two have been there. How uhhhh⦠is that going?â
âDifficult,â Bauteut said. âIâm sorry, Joan. I know you want to be a part of this, but⦠itâs difficult. If I wasnât a healer, I wouldnât have been there either. Every day it feels like something else goes wrong. There are still so many people who want to fight. If the Chosen werenât there and on the forefront of the negotiationsâ¦â

âI know,â Joan said. âIt takes the literal gods to make peace, doesnât it?â
âSomething like that,â Bauteut said. âThereâs a lot of people on both sides who just⦠want to keep fighting. The Demon Lord canât control the demons anymore. So many of their weapons are either gone or just⦠turned on their forces. The death and destruction theyâve suffered is incredible. Thereâs so much hatred and just⦠itâs not a place you should be right now. Itâll just be another excuse for some people.â
Joan nodded. It wasnât like she didnât understand that. She just⦠didnât like it. She wanted to help. But diplomacy like that was never what she was good at. Sheâd always been better at fighting things than discussing things with them. âI know. So⦠Penthe has been around you a lot?â
âShe met with Hardwin a lot,â Bauteut said. âDelivers a lot of letters. We havenât really talked with her, though. Sheâs probably said more to you in the last day than she said to us all the months we were up there. Met her sister, though.â
Joan nearly choked and grabbed Bauteutâs arm, shaking her slightly. âPenthe has a sister? Really? Since when?â
âShe does,â Bauteut said before giving a light chuckle. âA demon, though. I think⦠from a ritual.â
Joan cringed. âWas she⦠I mean⦠was she nasty? Vicious? Orâ¦?â
âI donât know,â Bauteut said. âI only saw her once and for a few minutes. I only even knew who she was since someone else mentioned her.â
Joan glanced to Qakog, who merely shrugged. She gave a defeated sigh. âI guess Iâll just add it to the list of everything else I donât know about Penthe. On the upside, I might be getting some answers soon.â
âHow?â Bauteut asked.
âWell,â Joan said sheepishly. âPenthe is going to be here taking care of some things, she said I could help. Before you get mad, Iâm sure sheâd be okay with you helping too!â
Bauteut gave a soft, exhausted sigh. âYou know, we came down here to help you. Then you run off on your own, nearly get yourself killed and come back with Penthe of all people. You sure you want us here at all? You can just tell us if youâd rather we not. We wonât--â
âDonât say that,â Joan said softly. âPlease. Donât. I donâtâ¦â Her cheeks went a little red and she glanced between Penthe and Qakog. Then she glanced to Ifrit and Francis. Great. It felt embarrassing saying this here, in front of all of them. But⦠âI⦠I want you here. I missed you. So much. I canât even explain how much I missed you. Every day I thought about both of you and⦠well, everyone else. The Chosen. Even Zorn. I⦠I miss having my friends. I miss doing things with all of you. And I uhhh⦠okay so I kind of miss your attention Qakog,â Joan said quickly, the heat radiating off her face so much she swore she could hear sizzling. âI definitely missed having you around, Bauteut. I know. We saved the world, Iâm supposed to rest. I did rest. A lot. I then rested some more. And then some more. Iâm going mad resting. I thought I wanted to adventure and go do wild things again. No, I do. But⦠itâs⦠not the same without everyone. Without my friends, itâs kind of⦠hollow. Almost empty. It doesnât feel⦠right,â Joan said, finally not able to do it anymore. She covered her face with her hands. âCan I just die of shame, now? Please?â
After a few moments he felt a hug. A second later she felt a hug from the other side. She looked up and saw Bauteut and Qakog hugging her from either side.
âWe missed you too,â Bauteut said softly once they pulled back from her. âI know the Chosen do, as well. Butâ¦â
âBut what theyâre doing is important,â Joan said. âFixing the world. I know. Even if we all saved it, it doesnât mean everything else is done. Thereâs still so much to do. I know.â
âThings are different now,â Bauteut said. âBut⦠even if weâre not all together, it doesnât mean we donât want to be.â
âI know,â Joan said. âItâs still nice having you around and being able to do things with you. And it is sooooo much easier now that the world isnât ending.â
âSo⦠this means weâre going to have more adventures, right?â Qakog asked.
Bauteut gave a soft sigh. âYes. I suppose it does. Assuming our resident hero doesnât mind waiting for us next time?â
Joan nodded. âFine. I promise next time that time literally stops, Iâll do my best to avoid being dragged into any portals where I have to fight for my life.â
âWell, so long as you try your best,â Bauteut said before gently reaching up and tugging on her hair a little bit. âWhen is the last time you had a haircut?â
âUhhhhâ¦â Joan said, her cheeks going a little redder. âSoooo. Ifrit, what would you like to do for now?â
âI guess⦠Iâll just come with all of you,â Ifrit said. âIf thatâs okay? Itâs probably about as safe as anywhere else. At least one Chosen is around you at most times. And you did solve this. So ummmm⦠Iâd like to help. If I can.â
Joan gave a shrug. âEh, why not? Still gonna feel weird, though. No offense, Francis. Justâ¦â She glanced to Qakog. âI guess Iâll be going on adventures with three people who used to try and kill meâ¦â
âFour,â Bauteut said. âYou forgot yourself.â
Joan gave a light snort and leaned against her, resting her head on the other girlâs shoulder. âI just wanna make sure youâre not borrrrred.â
Bauteut gave a light snort. âAs if you could even be boring. Is there anything else we need to worry about?â
âNah,â Joan said. âWait, maybe. Thereâs some ancient elementals but⦠eh. Theyâre probably nothing. I should probably talk with Penthe about that. Itâll be fine. Weâll just deal with it while we deal with everything else.â
âYou know, Joan,â Bauteut said. âJust because youâre not as stressed isnât a good reason to make us stressed.â
Joan just gave her a big grin and knew she was going to get glared at for this, but she couldnât help herself. âOh, donât worry so much, Bauteut. Itâs not the end of the world.â
