The sweet scent of roses overwhelmed Esther like a crashing wave, almost making her gag. Every thorn on those roses seemed to stab her, causing unbearable pain. Even breathing hurt.
She stood there, unable to move, locking eyes with Bradley in his wheelchair. Despite his handsome appearance, he felt as distant as the sky.
Mandy glanced at Esther and grinned slyly. Did Esther not know that Bradley wanted to marry her for the Pendletonsâ sake? Regardless, Mandy reveled in Estherâs suffering, finding her happiness in their pain.
âMr. Warner, I canât,â Mandy said, her fingers lightly tracing the rose petals. A thorn pricked her, and a tiny drop of blood appeared.
âPlease, donât use me in your marriage games,â she added.
11 Bradleyâs hand caressed his wheelchairâs armrest as he met Mandyâs captivating gaze. Mandy, youâre mistaken. Everything Iâve said today is true. If you have doubts, Iâll prove it.â
Mandy mockingly smiled and replied, âYou must be joking, Mr. Warner.â
TI Holding a bunch of roses, she approached the emotionally shattered Esther. âMrs. Warner, donât involve me in your romantic drama.â

Esther stared at the roses in Mandyâs arms, her mind in turmoil. She fought back her tears, not wanting to show her vulnerability.
âMandy, youâre wrong. Sheâs not Mrs. Warner,â Bradley said, moving his wheelchair closer.â If thereâs a Mrs. Warner in this world, it can only be you.â
Esther gnashed her teeth so hard her lips turned pale, her eyes filled with an indescribable sadness.
Mandy sighed. âMr. Warnerâ¦â
Bradley gently held her hand and soothingly said, âIf you donât like red roses, I can get you any other flower you prefer.â
Mandy returned the bouquet. âMr. Warner, Iâm not the one these roses are for.â
Mandy glanced at Estherâs exhausted face one last time and reluctantly suggested, âYou two need to have an honest conversation.â
Trying to disengage from the emotional tug-of-war, Bradley reached out and pulled her onto his lap.
âAh!â Mandy exclaimed, finding herself suddenly seated on him. Her hand accidentally touched Bradleyâs wound.
A muffled groan escaped his lips.
âBrad⦠What are youâ¦â Esther stammered.
Only then did Mandy realize she had sat on Bradleyâs wounds. âMr. Warner, Iâm so sorry. I didnât mean to. Are you okay?â
Bradley suppressed the urge to push her away, grabbed her slender wrist, and said sternly, Iâm fine, but you should call a nurse to check this wound.â
âIâm so sorry!â
