Before Mandy could respond, the call abruptly ended.
âYou all heard him. Without his consent, I canât donate my liver to Bradley. Please, leave,â she said.
Jasper cautiously asked, âWhat if Esther pretends to agree to marry Chadwick?â
Estherâs heart chilled. Could pretending even work?
Mandy took a deep breath and smiled faintly. âMr. and Mrs. Warner are still legally married. She canât pretend to accept my brotherâs proposal, can she?â
âEsther, can you do it?â Jasperâs tone turned icy, cutting to the chase. âTo destroy the Pendletons for good, we first need to stabilize their position.â
IT Esther hesitated, clenching her fists. âIâm not sure if Brad would agree.â
âWouldnât he give his consent if itâs a matter of saving his life?â Mandy probed.
âBradley is quite domineering, not to mention heâs already at odds with Chadwick. So if heâ¦â Jasper started but did not finish. âIt would be understandable if Bradley disagreed.â
âIf Bradley is the deciding factor in this, then I suggest you consult with him thoroughly beforeâ¦â
Mandyâs voice trailed off when a nurse burst into the room, her face filled with panic. âMiss, your mother has fainted!â
The group hurried back to the villa.
Liora was in critical condition. The clinic doctors were stumped, and an ambulance was summoned for her transfer to the hospital.
Sitting alone on a bench, Mandy clasped her hands in silent prayer. Not long after, the doctor emerged.
âDoctor, howâs my mother doing?â Mandy anxiously asked.
âHer condition isnât good. Iâd advise you to be prepared mentally,â the doctor replied.
Mandyâs knees almost gave way, but Esther caught her just in time.
Taking a deep breath to compose herself, Mandy entered the room:
âMom, donât scare me!â
Liora tenderly stroked her hair, whispering, âMandy, donât worry. Your mom is going to be fine. Iâve yet to see my precious daughter walk down the aisle.â
Mandy had intended to declare she would never marry again in this lifetime. However, the words stuck in her throat. âMom, the truth is, I have a boyfriend,â she blurted out, spinning a huge lie.
Liora looked surprised. âWhen did this happen? Why didnât I hear about it?â
âMy brother introduced us.â A flash of cunning gleamed in Mandyâs eyes. âHeâs a businessman with no elders in his family. That means I wonât have to deal with difficult in-law relationships.â
âYou little rascal, holding onto such a big secret! When can you introduce him to me?â Liora responded, a mix of excitement and anxiety in her tone.
Mandy took her time adjusting the blanket over Liora, choosing her next words carefully. âMom, you need to get better first. Who else would help me with the kids? Would you be okay if I hired a nanny?â
âMandy, your mom will be fine. I will certainly help you with the children.â
After taking her medicine, Liora drifted off into a drowsy slumber.
